Sundubu Jjigae Makes the Ideal Healthy Winter Meal

Sundubu Jjigae Ideal Saglikli Kis Yemegi Yapar

When a chilly wind begins to blow and mufflers don't help to keep warm, many Koreans long for a hot spicy tofu soup. And besides being a perfect winter warmer, sundubu jjigae also clocks in at a mere 204 calories per bowl.

But just because it has few calories does not mean it is bland or insufficiently nutritious. On the contrary, sundubu jjigae is a flavorful dish. It is made with soft tofu, which is rich in protein and vitamins. Soft tofu is made from white soy beans that are steamed, peeled and whisked in a large boiling bowl. This base for soft tofu is then put into a cotton cloth bag to squeeze out the water. Afterwards, brine is added to the soybean milk, forming clusters of soft tofu, which has such high protein levels that Koreans call soybeans "meat harvested from the ground."

To make the dish, red pepper powder, sesame oil, ginger, garlic and spring onion are added, finished off with the addition of a raw egg to the piping hot traditional earthen pot. According to taste, other ingredients like seafood, beef, clams, seaweed, sprouts, onions, or mushrooms can be added. Some people add Kimchi, as well as dumplings of various sorts. There is even sundubu jjigae with ham and cheese in specialty restaurants BCD Tofu House, a successful chain not only in Korea but also in the U.S., Thailand, Taiwan, and Japan.

Low in calories, full of nutrients, and varied to match each and every person's taste, no wonder sundubu jjigae has been called by the New York Times "the ideal winter meal."

Persembe günü Jeongwol Daeboreum olarak bilinen kamer yilinin ilk dolunay gecesi olacak. Koreliler festival süresince egok-bap ya da mevsimlik sebze çesitleriyle birlikte bes tahilli pirinç yemektedirler.

Geçmiste, günde üç ögün yemek yemenin lüks sayildigi zamanda, komsulari ziyaret edip en az 3 kere yemek islerine yardim etmenin yil boyunca iyi sans ve saglik getirecegine inaniliyordu. Ülke fakirken komsular arasinda yemek paylasarak yardimda bulunmak adettendi.

Daeboreum yemegi soguk kis aylari boyunca istah ve beslenme kaybini önlemeye odaklanmistir. Ayrica o zamanlar bol ve besleyici gidalar yemek önemliydi, çünkü tarim mevsiminin baslangiciydi.

Thursday is the first full moon of the lunar year, which is known as Jeongwol Daeboreum. Koreans eat ogok-bap or five-grain rice with an assortment of seasoned vegetables over the festival.

In the past, when it was a luxury to have three meals a day, it was believed that going around the neighborhood and getting at least three helpings of the dish would bring good luck and health throughout the year. It was a custom to promote a giving spirit among neighbors by sharing food when the country was poor.

The food of Daeboreum focuses on using the opportunity to restore appetite and nutrition lost over the cold winter months. Eating hearty, nutritious fare was also important because it was the beginning of the farming season.

New Year’s Beauty Resolutions

It’s the beginning of a New Year and that means it’s time to set New Year’s resolutions! As you think about ways to revamp your image for the New Year, it’s important not to neglect resolutions for fashion and beauty. Today I’m going to introduce essential beauty habits you should develop and practice to keep you looking stylish and glamorous as you are throughout the New Year.

- Clean out your wardrobe

First up, clean out your wardrobe. Before you venture out on a shopping spree in celebration of the New Year, it’s important to go through your existing wardrobe and weed out those clothes that no longer suit your style. Consider donating clothes that are too small or out of fashion. If you are unsure whether to get rid of unwanted clothes or not—here’s a general rule of thumb: If you haven’t worn something in a year, chances are good that you won’t reach for them again. So before you consider picking up trendy items, remember to downsize your closet first by removing all the excess clothes so you can build a truly functional, smaller wardrobe filled with timeless essentials. Once you have figured out what to keep and what to toss, utilize space-savers like closet bars and storage cubes and organize your clothes according to like colors, textures, and styles.

- Stock up on classics

Next, make a list of items you want to add to your wardrobe. Check to see if you have enough classic items including but not limited to tailored wool coats, pea coats, down parkas, nice pair of trousers, button down shirts, LBDs (little black dress), good quality jeans, and sweaters and cardigans made of high quality materials. It’s always a good idea to build your wardrobe around basic elements and then consider incorporating a few trendy pieces to spice up your look. Refrain from adding too many inexpensive trendy items made of low quality material, which may shrink or tear after a few washes. Remember, think quality over quantity when it comes to wardrobe planning.

- Clean out your makeup

Lastly, you want to do the same with makeup. Before you stock in on the season’s hottest makeup products, organize your makeup drawer first to get a feel for what you have and what you might need—go through your makeup collection and toss any old products such as mascara, lipsticks, eye shadows, sunblock, moisturizers, and more. Remember, makeup expires; outdated makeup can harbor bacteria, which may cause breakouts and skin irritations. Here’s a good rule of thumb: anything older than a year should be thrown out. Mascaras as well as pencil and/or liquid eyeliners are the exception to this rule—beauty experts recommend replacing them every three months. Old mascara and eyeliners can cause eye infections—so it’s always a good idea to use fresh products. Don’t forget to sort out your makeup utilizing glass beakers, dividers, and small storage cubes so you can spot things easily.

Skin care resolutions for the New Year

So here we are in the second week of the New Year and I hope your resolutions are coming along nicely. As you consider the positive changes you want to bring into your life, there’s one thing you can’t miss—fashion and beauty commitments you can keep for a whole new you! Picking up from where we left off last week, today I’m going to introduce skin care resolutions you can develop to stay beautiful as you are.

- Adopt good makeup removal habits

The first step to getting a healthy, dewy complexion is to cleanse your face properly. Don’t forget to cleanse your face every night using a mild cleanser suited to your skin type. Practice double cleansing this year—first, remove makeup or oil residue on the face using cleansing oil, and then thoroughly remove any traces of makeup or impurities on the skin by washing your face with a facial foam or a soap. While multi-purpose cleaning oils are convenient, it’s a good idea to use a separate eye and lip makeup remover, especially if you tend to wear heavy make up. Choose products rich in antioxidants and emollients to lock in moisture your skin needs. To avoid irritating the skin, wash your face using lukewarm water and then finish with cold water to close the open pore. Remember, a good cleansing habit is a must!

- Don’t forget to exfoliate your face and body

The importance of exfoliating the skin cannot be stressed enough. Even if you may use good quality skincare products, your skin cannot absorb the nutrients that it needs if you don’t exfoliate regularly. Using a gentle facial and body scrub, exfoliate at least twice a week to remove dead skin cells and dirt clogging your pores. Remember, the top layer of impurities and dead cells can make your skin look dull and can lead to the growth of bacteria, ultimately causing unwanted skin problems. So make it a habit to exfoliate your skin on a regular basis!

- Switch to skincare products tailored to your particular needs

As we talked about before, makeup products expire. Check the expiration dates on the lotions and creams you are using and weed out anything that is older than a year. Know your skin type and choose products that match your skin’s condition. Visit a makeup counter and experiment with products formulated with skin-enhancing ingredients including antioxidants, natural extracts, essential minerals and vitamins. Whether it’s anti-aging, wrinkle reducing, or acne clearing, find products best suited for your current skin care needs.

- Wear your sunscreen dutifully

Make it part of your daily beauty routine to wear your sunscreen (with an SPF of 30 or higher) before you put on your foundation or tinted moisturizer. UV rays are extremely harmful to the skin, causing wrinkles and attacking and damaging healthy skin cells. Don’t forget your sunscreen even on those busy mornings!

We are well into the New Year and I’m sure most of you have spent some time mulling over your goals you want to accomplish in the year 2012. This month’s Style Korea features fashion and beauty resolutions you can develop and keep for the New Year so you can always keep your style in check and look your very best throughout the year ahead. Today I’m going to introduce makeup resolutions to help you set style goals so you can revamp your image.

- Organize your makeup drawer

First and foremost, it’s important that you regularly organize your makeup drawer. Before you consider adding new items to your makeup collection, it’s important to throw out anything old and dusty, so you won’t have to struggle through piles of makeup products that you never use. Get yourself a beaker or a cup lying around the house and store all of your makeup brushes, pencil and liquid eyeliners, lip liners, and tall lip glosses. For easy reach, utilize small bins or boxes with dividers and sort out your makeup according to “like” items such as eyeshadows and lipsticks.

- Clean your brushes and makeup applicators

Don’t forget to wash your makeup brushes at least twice a week using antibacterial soap, sanitizers, or brush cleaners. Dirt, oil, makeup residue, and bacteria left on the makeup brushes and applicators can clog your pores, causing breakouts and blemishes on the face. How Korean Food Is Perceived Abroad

Kore Yemeklerinin Yabanci Ülkelerdeki Algilanisi

Amerika’da yapilan arastirma Kore yemeklerinin Amerika’da popüler olmadigini e yüksek fiyatli olarak algilandigini gösteriyor. Fakat ucuz olarak görülen Çin’de ve Japonya’da oldukça popüler. Arastirma; Tarim, Su Isleri, Yiyecek Bakanligi Danismanligi’na dayanarak her bir 500’ü Çin’de, Japonya’da, Amerika’da ve Vietnam’daki insanlar arasinda yürütüldü. Korean food is unpopular and considered overpriced in the U.S., a survey shows. But it is widely popular in China and Japan, where it is seen as cheap. The straw poll was conducted among 2,000 foreigners, 500 each in China, Japan, the U.S., and Vietnam, by consulting firm Accenture for the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. With Americans, Korean food ranked only eighth in popularity among 12 cuisines -- Korean, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Indian, Italian, Japanese, Mexican, Thai, Vietnam, and others.

[b]They enjoyed Italian and Mexican food most, followed by Japanese and Chinese. Asked why they do not enjoy Korean food, the biggest group of 18.5 percent cited a limited menu, followed by sanitary issues (15.3 percent), spiciness (13.2 percent) and price (12.5 percent).
Americans in the upper income bracket earning no less than US$8,700 per month said Korean food should taste more Korean, while those in the lower income bracket with an average monthly salary less than $2,900 thought that flavor and ingredients should be adapted to American palates.
The consultants recommended that upmarket Korean restaurants in the U.S. should adhere to traditional flavors while cheaper restaurants would be well-advised to adapt to local tastes.

Asked which dish comes to mind when they think about Korean food, Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese selected kimchi while Americans said galbi or grilled beef ribs.
In Asia, Korean food was one of the most favored dishes. In China Korean food was the most popular foreign cuisine over Japanese or Italian dishes. It was the second favored foreign dish in Vietnam and the third in Japan.

In China, a Korean meal cost an average of $8 per customer, the lowest price among 11 foreign cuisines surveyed and only a quarter of French meal, which was $37. Accenture pointed out that there are scores of Korean restaurants run by a Chinese without a proper knowledge of the cuisine and serving poor-quality dishes. It warned that the perception of Korean food as low-price and low-quality might persist.

The image of Korean food was not much better in Japan, where a meal cost on average $10. But In Vietnam, Korean meals were the second most expensive with an average $5.60 per person, following Italian food with an average price tag of $5.94.

Mount Bohyeon in Yeongcheon, North Gyeongsang, may not be the tallest mountain in Korea - but it could be the best location for gazing at the stars.

With no major cities nearby polluting the atmosphere and clear skies all year round, the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory, which includes a 1.8-meter reflecting telescope (the longest such telescope in Korea), was constructed near the peak.

The telescope marked a turning point in Korean astronomical studies, allowing for detailed observation of comets and galaxies.

During a recent trip to Mount Bohyeon, I was able to look through the famed telescope. The Cassiopeia Constellation, shaped like a “W,” half shrouded in the Milky Way, came into clear focus.

Every star has a story or legend behind it. People, too, have personal narratives describing how they became interested in astronomy. Park Yun-ho, a researcher at the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory, began his relationship with the stars back in his college years.

After majoring in physics, the researcher said the stars’ mysticism soon led to him becoming an astronomer. He has worked at the observatory for 14 years.

He is not alone in his quest to understand the universe. According to the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, there are 10,000 amateur observers in Korea as well as 50 official and 50 unofficial observatories.

Like my experience at the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory, anyone with an interest in the stars can visit one of these locations and dive into the wondrous abyss of astronomy.



The Bohyunsan Observatory

It was freezing cold when I arrived at the observatory, but fortunately the snow had been cleared from the roads. Winter time, when the temperature and humidity are low, is the perfect time to observe the stars.

“One winter 10 years ago, there was so much snow that no one could reach the observatory,” Park, the researcher, said. “After that incident, we’ve made sure to shovel the snow immediately after it falls.”

The observatory’s efforts worked for me. I had arrived at the best observing site in all of Korea, Park assured me.

“For nine years, the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute searched nationwide to find a mountain for a suitable observatory location,” Park said. “In 1995, four mountains were nominated and considered for about a year. Finally Mount Bohyeon was the call.”

Public entrance is limited, as this famed observatory was built for research. It is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the winter season. During the rest of the year, only researchers are permitted to enter.

The 1.8-meter reflecting telescope, however, is shown to the public more often. It is on display at the Yeongcheon Bohyeon Mountain Starlight Festival and is accessible from April to June and September to August.



Stars for the family

In Korea, 15 first-magnitude, or brightest, stars can typically be observed. During winter, however, only seven of these first-magnitude stars can be seen in this observatory.

With the observatory closing relatively early, amateurs who want to stay longer often camp out at the observatory’s parking lot to gaze at the stars throughout the night.

Families can also take advantage of the Bohyeon Mountain Science Museum, located just beneath the observatory, which is run by the Yeongcheon City Government.

The museum offers a casual atmosphere in which the public can experience astronomical phenomena.

The museum is open from 2 to 10 p.m. and usually takes an hour to see it in its entirety. At the “5-D Dome Picture Tube,” one can sit down for around 20 minutes and travel virtually throughout outer space. The abrupt movements of the electric chairs will even make adults’ hearts jump.

A robot that dances along to the song “Nobody” by girl group Wonder Girls is another popular highlight of the space exhibit.

The second floor of the museum is for observing stars. A class teaching astronomical observation by Cho Hyun-min, a Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory researcher, is offered every hour.

“There are a lot of family group spectators during the winter break,” Cho said.

Stargazing in the winter is a perfect opportunity to connect with family members and place the daily grind in a larger perspective. If you can withstand the frigid temperatures, spend a weekend observing the unknown from Korea’s peaks.

The traditional dish cheonggukjang is gaining popularity with new cosmetic and medical uses. Three senior doctors -- Dr. Bae Sun-ryang from the ophthalmology department at Taejon St. Mary's Hospital, Dr. Kim Chul-joong of Chungnam National University's Veterinary College, and Dr. Poo Ha-ryoung, Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology -- report that poly-gamma-glutamic acid (PGA), a major ingredient of mucous materials in the dish, was effective in treating xerophthalmia and corneal wound in animal tests.

The experiment proved it can alleviate inflammation by controlling activation of hyaluronidase, the enzyme that dissolves hyaluronic acid, as well as its outstanding moisturizing properties.

The protein, enzymes, biologically active materials and bacteria of fermented soybean have plenty of beneficial effects. Bacillus subtilis and lecithin wash off cholesterol stuck to the walls of vessels, thereby contributing to smooth blood circulation. Vitamin B2 helps to prevent diabetes, and Vitamin E to deter the aging process and wrinkles. As 1gram of cheonggukjang contains 1,000 times the lactic acid bacteria of some lactic-acid fermented drinks, it also helps prevent diarrhea, enteritis and constipation.

The bacillus subtilis found in cheonggukjang also removes harmful bacteria. Choi Yong-bum from the dermatology department at Konkuk University Hospital said the lactic acid bacteria in cheonggukjang and doenjang "holds down the growth of other bacteria in a wound, so it prevents the aggravation of injuries and helps to heal a wound. This is why our ancestors applied doenjang to a wound.”

Cheonggukjang can also improve skin. Research shows that it helps prevent pigmentation and provide moisturization and elasticity. A Korean cosmetics company discovered that bacillus subtilis checks the multiplication of various pathogenic bacteria by secreting antibiotics, and has conducted research to remove the fermented food's characteristic pungent smell. The Korea Food and Drug Administration has approved cheonggukjang as an ingredient for cosmetics, and now cheonggukjang packs and cosmetics are available in the shops.

Products using fermented spoybean have been adopted by dermatologists as a supplementary method. A Starskin Clinic staffer says since the Gamma PGA in cheonggukjang was found to be effective in moisturizing, removing wrinkles, and enhancing elasticity and whitening, some skin clinics use a pack including cheonggukjang after laser treatment.

Kore dramalari Japonya'da çok begeniliyor. Bu tür hanoklar tarihi Kore dramalarinda ön plana çikarildi. Bir TV sovundaymisim gibi hissediyorum. A cloud of hot steam envelops as soon as the lid is opened. In Korea the fire in the furnace not only boils water, but heats the rooms. Judging from the ferocity of the fire, the floor of the room must be quite toasty by now.

This is jjimjilbang or a Korean dry sauna. It’s really hot here, isn’t it? This is where we burn wood and you can see the water boiling. The heat is really intense, because dry wood burns hotter.

This is Rakgojae, a 130-year-old home located in the traditional Gahoi-dong district of Seoul. Red-faced from the heat, its manager, Kim Yu-sun, stokes the furnace for foreign visitors.

This residence is named “Rakgojae” and is 130 years old. This used to be the site for Korea’s first Chin-Tan Society, an academic association of Korean studies. The place was renovated to offer Korea’s traditional residential experience to foreign tourists. Now it has five ondol-heated rooms with modern attached bathrooms.

“Rakgojae” means “a place to enjoy the old with a clear heart and comfort.” Roughly 130 years ago Joseon scholars stayed in these rooms, and today the home is renovated into a guesthouse offering traditional housing experiences to visitors. The house is structured in the shape of a square with a yard in the center. It still retains original features, such as a pond, a pavilion, and a wood-floored open living room. This is a perfect place to appreciate the beauty of Korean heritage. The house’s appeal becomes evident in the winter when the freezing wind and plunging temperatures are rendered harmless inside the toasty rooms warmed up with the traditional ondol heating system. Korea is proud of its ondol culture, a uniquely Korean floor-heating system, and winter is the time when the true value of ondol can be fully appreciated.

- I had a great first impression of it. The house built of wood and the hanji wowed me. The front yard was good and the kitchen was charming, too.
- It is a very beautiful house. The yard was really beautiful and peaceful. Its first impression was very good. This is not just a place in a movie, but a house where people can really live.


When you pass through the front gate, you see a cluster of clay urns containing traditional Korean soybean pastes. Behind it stands Rakgojae, a cozy and charming hanok. Such Korean-style guesthouses are growing quite popular among foreign visitors, who find hanok’s unique structure and layout quite appealing. They are enchanted by the ambience and traditional features not found in modern hotels or condominiums. Reflecting the trend, the number of foreign tourists opting to stay in traditional guesthouses, which had hovered around 3,000 in 2006, has topped 100 thousand in 2010.

- We don’t often have opportunities to see how people lived in the past, but here I can see how Korean people lived in the old days. My husband promised me that we would stay here the next time we visit Korea. I really want to spend the night here.
- I’ve seen traditional Korean houses only in pictures. I never thought I would get a chance to stay at a home like the one I’d seen in a photo.
-Unlike hotels, this place is peaceful and the home-cooked food was delicious. I can stay very comfortably here.

Korean traditional houses or hanoks have been introduced to foreign audiences through Korean dramas. The surging popularity of Korean pop culture and TV shows have drawn a number of foreign visitors eager to experience Korean culture as depicted in historical dramas.

Korean dramas are big hits in Japan. Hanoks like this are featured in Korean historical dramas. I feel like I’m starring in a TV show. I’ve watched “The Jewel in the Palace,” “Sungkyunkwan Scandal,” “Iljimae,” “Queen Seondeok,” and “Heo Jun.” I especially want to stay at a place where TV series “My Name is Kim Sam-soon” was filmed. I’m going to recommend the place to my friends, and stay here with my family the next time I come to Korea. Rakgojae doesn’t have beds. Instead, there are thick Korean-style mats and hanji-covered windows. I definitely want to recommend staying here.

The hallyu wave and the appeals of hanok have drawn an increasing number of foreign tourists to Korean-style guesthouses. Subsequently, there are many more traditional guesthouses available to tourists. In particular, the Bukchon area in the older part of Seoul still has an enclave of old hanoks. This historically preserved district alone has 56 traditional guesthouses in operation.

It’s a great place to look at cultural places nearby. Ii can walk to old palaces, Buddhist temples, and shopping centers near the hanok village. I liked the palaces and the changing-of-the-guards ceremony. I liked shopping, too, especially traditional Korean items like ceramics. There are many art galleries and the national museum was also interesting. Thanks to this place, I have a great image of Seoul.

Foreigners could have found staying in Korean-style guesthouses inconvenient. Sleeping on the floor or lacking side-by-side living and sleeping quarters may not have appealed to foreign tourists, but, surprisingly, they very much appreciated the ancient ambience and comfort of hanok. My wife asked to stay here. It’s not as well-known as five-star hotels, but we got to know a Korean family from here. Hanok is so comfortable and it’s something you don’t see in other countries. I can see tradition in Korea’s unique buildings. And it’s really comfortable and warm even in winter.

An overnight stay costs generally over 100 dollars per person, but the rooms are booked well in advance because of the limited number of rooms in hanok. Here’s Rakgojae manager Kim Yu-sun again.

We only have five rooms. Foreign guests contact us through emails or phone calls to reserve a room a month or two ahead of time. Those who call us now can’t get a room. Most of our guests are foreigners. They want to experience traditional culture, so they take part in our kimchi-making event and take kimchi home. Also, we have traditional royal costumes here so they can try them on and take pictures.

Programs may differ from place to place, but most guesthouses offer various cultural experience programs, such as Korean cuisine tasting course, make-your-own Korean cookies event, and Korean cooking class. These programs offer foreign guests some unforgettable experiences.

Korean guesthouses are particularly sought after in the middle of winter. That’s because of hanok’s ondol, Korea’s unique floor-heating system.

Our ancestors said that sleeping on the hot floor made them feel great in the morning. Well, our foreign guests say the same thing. They love lying on their back on the heated ondol floor. I guess people are all alike.

Ondol typifies the warm and comfortable sleeping culture of Korea. The first record on ondol can be found in a Chinese history book on Goguryeo, a Korean kingdom that ruled the northern part of the Korean Peninsula from first through seventh century. The book describes Goguryeo people carving out a tunnel under the dirt floor and heat the room by burning wood at the mouth of the tunnel and forcing air into it. It can thus be assumed that Korea’s ondol system began in the mid-seventh century. The heat from the floor blocked cold draft from invading the room and kept body temperature constant in the middle of winter. The ondol heating system was what made living on the floor possible for Koreans. Here’s Director Jang Myung-hee of the Hanok Culture Center.

The structure of ondol is akin to a network of roads with stone walls underneath the floor. When fire is burning in the furnace, the roads convey the heated air from the fire, warming up the entire floor and the room. After the heated air circulates around the network of roads, it exits through the chimney. Ondol is a very energy-efficient system.

In order to maximize heating efficiency, moisture from the ground must be removed, which is done to perfection in hanok. Here’s Hanok Culture Center Director Jang Myung-hee again.

The floor of hanok is set up three or five steps above the ground. This distance between the structure and the ground allows the rooms to escape moisture.

Sometimes the floor gets so hot that it leaves your back or bottoms red and scalded. But lie down on a thick mat with only your nose peeking out of a heavy comforter and you’ll feel safe in a cozy cocoon of warmth. Almost every Korean has a fond childhood memory of spending a frigid winter night inside an ondol-heated room. Now foreign guests can have the same experience.

- I like staying warm in the winter, and I can sleep in warmth in an ondol-heated room. My feet stay warm, too.
- The floor-warming system is wonderful. You can even take off your shoes and stay warm.

Hanok is separated into individual quarters and communal areas like living room and kitchen. Although multiple generations live under one roof, each member is ensured privacy and personal space. However, hanok is also designed to facilitate communication. Such merits do not escape the foreign guests of Korean-style inns.

- I met a lot of people here and the host family was so nice. They helped me so much. I was able to talk with other tourists in the kitchen.
- It was built to make communicating with the host family easy for guests. I also found the warmth of ondol very special.

The communal area of maru, or an open living space, is another special feature of hanok. Here’s Hanok Culture Center Director Jang Myung-hee to explain more.

A special feature of hanok is that ondol-heated rooms and open manu are under one roof. Ondol is for us to stay warm in the cold seasons, and maru is to stay cool in the summer months. Korean hanoks have these two features under one roof, which is rarely found in other parts of the world.

In a small village in northeastern China, 1,500 units of Korean-style hotels and homes are under construction. Germany is also showing interest in hanok-style buildings. It appears hanok may well be the next hallyu export.

-TOP'nin farkli bir moda felsefesi oldugunu bu yüzden stil için en zor üye oldugunu duyduk. Bu dogru mu?

Aslinda gençligimden beri hip hop seviyordum ve FUBU'dan önce kiyafet satin almak üzere bana yardim etmeleri için ABD'deki akrabalarima ve arkadaslarima sordum. Sahsen en çok FUBU Platinum hattini seviyorum ve dolabimda bu hattan gelen bir çok kiyafet var. FUBU için model olma fikri basladiginda ve Soh CD'nin tasarimci olacagini duydum, ben bir çok tahmin yapmistim. Onun özel tasarlanmis giysilerini giymek... ve bunu söylemiyorum çünkü yanimda oturuyor, ama gerçekten sasirdim. Tüm giysiler yükselmis gibi hissettiriyor.

-Bir süre önce TOP, Gummy'nin ‘I am a Singer’ sahnesinde sürpriz bir görünüm yapti. Bu gösteride olmak nasildi?

Ben gösterideydim çünkü duydum ki Gummy noona önceki yarismada birinci olamamis, bu yüzden "onu 1 numara yapmam gerekiyor" diye düsündüm. Dürüst olmak gerekirse, zaten yaptigim bir çok sarki var fakat sanirim üzerinde biraz daha çalismaliyim. Kendime olan güvenim üzerinde de çalisiyorum ve yavasca artiyor. Insanlari sasirtacak bir albüm üretemezsem, bir tane daha üretmeye ihtiyaç olmadigini düsünürüm. Her seyden önce, 2012 Ocak ayindan itibaren daha az endiselenmek istiyorum.

-Ilk kez olan FUBU ve TOP bulusmasinin ortak etkisi neydi?

Soh CD: Her zaman kendi markamin üzerinde çalistim ve öncesinde koleksiyonumu sundum fakat kisisel marka üzerinde çok kisitlamalar var. -Last year, a lot of things happened to BIGBANG. What did you do during these blank periods?

We went to Europe to participate in the 2011 EMAs. Since I had CF shooting schedules during the day so I didn’t have much rest time for myself. When there were no schedules planned, I was in the studio creating music overnight. I haven’t rested after I debuted so I don’t anticipate nor regret if I have holiday time or not (laughs).

-What do you say to your members to encourage them?

I’m the eldest hyung so I always talk to my dongsaengs and we always dine together. Besides myself, I feel that they’ve all matured and become sensible. I should be more mature too..

-After 8 months, all 5 members stood on stage again with activities in Japan as well…but was the feeling a bit different this time?

I’ve never felt sad while standing on stage before. Compared to the emotion of feeling sad, winning the award had a different feeling. How should I say this – it’s quite unusual but it was extremely emotional for me (This made him silent for a few seconds as if he was reliving that moment again). I could find myself on stage again.

-Whilst working together with FUBU, did you also get any power from TOP and BIGBANG?

Soh CD: My aim was to not only give FUBU a fresh new look, but to also fully grasp the new theme. I wanted to transform the brand from a hip hop standard to one that fits in to the new era. During this process, BIGBANG was the most talked about. BIGBANG can show hip hop through their music and their culture and is favorable towards the general public. They are a good example.

-Why did you choose TOP from a mass of idols?

Soh CD: Because G-dragon is the face for Beanpole, haha. I’m just kidding. From a designer’s perspective, Seunghyun (TOP) is very popular right now. I’ve seen him a few times outside of work. He likes clothes a lot. He enjoys fashion so all the clothes look good on him and I’m not saying this as a clothing sponsor. As a designer, I think that he is the musician in Korea that can choose a comfortable style in 2012.

-What do you think is the reason why FUBU or designers like Soh CD and fashion brands want you?

TOP: How should I even answer this…haha
Soh CD: I think that it’s not only because TOP is good looking or has a good body, but it’s more about that TOP knows fashion well enough and that’s why I have so much confidence in him.
TOP: Like what Soh CD said, people are never perfect. One photo can last for a lifetime so you want to present the best. My personality is that I want to show my best impression in the photoshoots that other people the same age as me can’t.

-Continuing from that, Soh CD…what is TOP’s charisma?

Soh CD: I’ve felt regret to TOP before because usually when TOP is invited to be the model, he is asked to show off his charisma and masculinity in his fashion photoshoots. I saw other charismatic features in TOP too – someone that is full of curiosity, and who who withstands challenges in a healthy manner. This FUBU photoshoot therefore presents his sunshine boy and casual look.

-We’ve heard that TOP has a distinct fashion philosophy so you’re the hardest member to style. Is that true?

I’m a little bit picky (laughs), because my occupation is to present myself to the general public. I want to always show my best image, but I think my persistence is too much sometimes.

-How does it feel wearing Soh CD’s exclusively designed FUBU clothes?

Actually I’ve liked hip-hop since I was young and I’ve asked my relatives and friends in the U.S. to help me buy clothes from FUBU before. I personally love the FUBU Platinum line the most, and I have a lot of clothes from that line in my closet. When the idea of being a model for FUBU began and hearing that Soh CD would be designing, I was anticipating it a lot. To wear his exclusively designed clothes…and I’m not saying this because he’s sitting next to me, but I’m really surprised. It feels like all the clothes have been upgraded.

-Not long ago, TOP made a surprise appearance at Gummy’s ‘I am a Singer’ stage. How was it like being on the show?

I was on the show because I heard that Gummy noona didn’t get number 1 in the previous competition, so I had a “I must make her number 1” thought. In the end, she got a really good score (number 1) so I felt satisfied. Actually if ‘I’ am a Singer’ was my own stage, I would be very nervous but since I was there only to help so I told myself not to worry. After I finished the stage for ‘Rascal’, I really did end up becoming one.

-Lee Mi-Suk sunbae-nim said on ‘Healing Camp’ that she would like to act with you. When will you make your comeback as an actor again?

It’s not like that, but the after I finished recording for ‘I am A Singer’, I randomly saw Lee Mi-Suk sunbae-nim on ‘Healing Camp’. As a matter of fact, I said on a variety show before that “it’s tiring having photoshoots with Lee Mi-Suk sunbae-nim” as a way to be funny, but it became too exaggerated and I regretted saying that. It will definitely be an honor to act with Lee Mi-Suk sunbae-nim. As for my acting, I have a few projects on hand but because BIGBANG’s album release has been pushed to an earlier date, so my entire focus is on the album right now. If there are any other good projects and if our timing is the same, then I definitely want to act together no matter what.

-Do you have any intention of releasing a solo album?

There’s nothing much to say about my solo album. I will release it when I think I’m ready. To be honest, I have already created lots of songs but I think I should work on them a bit more. I’m working on my confidence too and it’s slowly increasing. If I can’t produce an album that will make people surprised, then I don’t think there’s a need to produce one. First of all, I want to worry less starting from January, 2012 (laughs).

-What was the combined effect of meeting FUBU and TOP for the first time?

Soh CD: I’ve always worked on my own brand and have presented my collection before but there’s a lot of restrictions on a personal brand. There’s a limit on how many people you know and what kind of level they’re on. Since I wanted to know more people to exchange ideas, that’s why I was determined to work with FUBU. TOP is a very popular celebrity and because FUBU wanted to try something new so I wanted to work with TOP to create that image.

-We’ve already heard that you’ll be working with Hello Kitty in May. It seems a bit surprising?

Soh CD: It’ll be my first time working with Hello Kitty in the clothing aspect. As of now, a lot of people still have a biased perception on what is hip-hop. In Korea, many people think that baggy pants represent hip-hop culture but nowadays, not a lot of hip-hop stars wear clothes like that anymore. I want to change this perception as soon as I can, so I think this collaboration will have a completely different meaning. Hopefully this will raise FUBU’s popularity in the spring time.
TOP: Collaborating with pop art is become a world trend and this will produce a lot of different elements. I wouldn’t have this thought if Soh CD wasn’t collaborating with Hello Kitty. CD & TOP will transform FUBU, haha.

-I’ve wanted to ask this in the beginning already, but you two seem quite close?

Soh CD: I’ve met him once by chance and we said our greetings to each other. G-Dragon came to my fashion show before, and TOP’s good friends – Lee Hyuk soo and 2NE1’s stylist, Yang Seung Ho were models for my runway show too so we met like that.
TOP: Actually I’m not the type of person to watch runway shows. I only heard about (Soh CD). I met him in a surprising environment. The first time I said hi to him was 3 months ago at a wine bar that I always frequent (they both laugh). We kept talking and talking and that’s how we became so close. The problem is I don’t really remember what we talked about. Just now, hyung (Soh CD) looked at me and said “It’s a bit embarrassing seeing each other during the day”.

-You always change hairstyles and the fans love it, but is your hair getting scarce? Doesn’t your hair and scalp get damaged?

This just proves that I’m still at a healthy age. I still have a lot of hair but surprisingly I can’t grow a mustache. It feels like I haven’t passed puberty yet (laughs). It’s only started to grow a bit these days….I usually shave my mustache once every 2 months.

-Finally, say something about your plan for 2012.

TOP: BIG BANG will hold its world tour soon so the plans for the rest of the year have already been scheduled. It looks like we’ll be very busy. We’re now preparing some surprising and happy news that can’t be revealed yet, so please look forward to it.
Soh CD: FUBU and Hello Kitty is preparing their collaboration and my aim is to transform FUBU to a brand full of liveliness.

miss A's Comeback Interview, From A to Z

A. It's A. The girl group, miss A, has made a comeback with their fourth project mini-album.

B. It's not about beauty. Until now, miss A was all about intensity. Perhaps it is due to their performances...or maybe their strong lyrics. miss A stressed a cool and chic vibe.

C. They wanted to be cute. Just like other girl groups, isn't it about time that miss A show that they, too, have a feminine side?

D. It's time to be different. Since they are nearing a full three years since their debut, they feel it's about time to prepare for a change.

Min says, "If someone said miss A, it was always linked with a strong image. Same with our fans. Many expected us to come out with an even stronger image the next time around. This year is our third year since our debut. We feel it's time to break that perception. We wanted to show that we can also change. So we made a decision. To show our feminine charm."

E. Here's the thing about the entertainment industry. Once you have a set image, it's not easy to change it. Sudden changes can result in a negative response. In one word, change is risky.

F. They have faith. More than fear of failing, miss A has faith that they will be able to pull this change off well. They believe they have even greater charms to show, more than they have already shown so far.


Fei adds, "There will definitely be a concept that fits us. But, there's more to us than what our abilities have shown so far. That's why we weren't afraid to challenge ourselves with a new image. We feel confident that we can now show an even better stage performance. I'm curious and looking forward to seeing how people will react to our new look."

G. They have taken extra steps to complete their girl transformations. It's not just about the choreography, outfits, and the hair. They spent great efforts to make their hand gestures more feminine. They specially want to achieve the soft feminine look.

H. They expressed a hurt girl's feelings through their lyrics. The title track, "Touch," is about a girl who faces the pain of a break-up and the hurt she carries around. Even though a new love comes her way, she is still stuck on her pain. It's a song about a girl's natural instinct to protect herself from further pain.

I. Instinct. In order to portray this new soft feminine lady image, the filming of their music video was also vastly different from their usual ones. For the first time, miss A filmed directly with a male actor. Of course, it wasn't easy. It was difficult to capture the right emotions. Ultimately, they were able to capture that instinctive human emotion of loneliness and create a music video that they are satisfied with.

Suzy explains, "We filmed the music video for two days. This time, there were many new experiences for us. There's a scene where we had to lipsync while acting and being hugged by the male actor. We had to lean on him and act, so I think it was the best way to get the lyrics across. Each member also did their best to give off sorrowful expressions. Thanks to everyone's hard work, I think we were able to finish creating an awesome music video."

J. We are preparing for a stage performance so awesome it will make others jealous. miss A will show unique dance moves that will put them at a different class altogether.

K. The moves are not necessarily kind to everyone. More than a performance which anyone can copy, they focused on creating a performance that only they can show. Their dance stresses on their fingertips with a charming transformation that only miss A can show.


Jia and Suzy state, "Park Jin Young PD first thought of a choreography that consisted of modern dance. There is no movement that expressed topsy-turvy suffering. Instead, there are movements resembling shooting a gun and the likes that stress the movements of the fingertips. It's a different style of imagery including strong gazes at our fingertips. If you pay attention to these aspects of our choreography, we're sure you'll feel our dance is definitely something else."

L. They worked hard for listeners as well. In order to portray the voice of a girl hurt by a love gone wrong, they took out a lot of the power in their voice during recording. Instead, they emphasized a lot on emotion-filled vocals.

M. The music is catchy. Right from the intro, the title track "Touch" has a synthesizer beat repeating throughout the song. If you listen to the sophisticated beat for just an instant, you can feel a slight groove happening in your shoulders. Just listening to the song once is enough to have the beat from the intro running in your head all day.

Min and Fei add, "We liked the title track from the moment we first heard it. From the start, the synthesized part that is repeated instantly becomes the part you can't forget. Also, the intro beat has a uniquely Korean feel to it. That's why we think this song isn't just for teenagers but will also be appreciated by older people as well."

N. Noise is happening already. Aside from the outfits, there are other sensational remarks. But, they are not a noisy girl group.

O. Omnibus. If you open the lid, you can know them. From their songs, choreography, dance, expressions, and even their outfits, they will definitely continue to show a vibrant stage performance.

P. Play. It will be a stage performance everyone can enjoy. And...

Q. They will show a quiet, feminine demeanor.

R. They will also show a romantic side to them.

S. They are sexy as well, albeit a different flavor of sexy.

T. Teacher. This is something that Park Jin Young wanted to see from them, as well.

U. They are unique and sexy.


Fei and Suzy say, "We've thought a lot about the term 'sexy' since our trainee days. But, we never liked the outright sexy look. We felt that real sexy came from confident expressions and great choreography, just like Beyonce and Rihanna. We searched for a style that was our own 'sexy.' There's a story behind our version of 'sexy'. The bandage dress represents covering up wounds, while the lacy rose-print one gives off the feminine vibe. Wearing pearls beneath the eyes represents tears. Rather than an outright sexy image, we think people will be able to construct a story out of the images we provide them."

V. They are pure and intense like a virgin. They are feminine, but stimulating. That is miss A's 'sexy'.

W. They have no worries.

X. Their album was made with lots of XOXO [hugs and kisses, by English standards, but the Korean interview uses this to mean "filled with love"]. miss A is definitely looking forward to hearing positive responses from their fans, as this album was made with love.

Y. Why? Confidence. That's what miss A is made of.

Z. They plan on giving a stage performance full of zeal and confidence. miss A will show an even more perfect form on stage.

miss A concludes, "We are looking forward to making a long-awaited comeback. miss A's new album theme for 2012 is the rose. Just as a flower blossoms, miss A would like to blossom as well. We worked hard to prepare for this comeback, paying attention to outfits, make-up, and expressions. We are a bit nervous but we will definitely do our best on stage.
