Seollal (Lunar New Year; January 1 in lunar calendar) is one of the most celebrated national holidays in Korea. While many observe Sinjeong (Solar New Year; January 1 in solar/regular calendar), most celebrate Seollal, which usually lasts for three days: the day of, the day before, and the day after. This year, Seollal falls on January 23 in regular calendar.

More than just a holiday to mark the beginning of a new year, Seollal is truly a special occasion for the Korean people. Not only is it a time for paying respect to ancestors, but it is also an opportunity to catch up with other family members. Then, it is not unusual to see people in beautiful hanbok (traditional clothes) performing ancestral rites or playing folk games, to eat delicious traditional foods, and to hear stories and chatters well into the night. Read on to discover some of the highlights of Seollal.

Before Seollal > Gifts, Travel Arrangements & Food!

Seollal demands a lot of preparation, especially in terms of gifts, traveling, and food. Gifts are exchanged among family members and friends, so gift shopping before the holiday is essential. The most popular Seollal gifts of all time are department store gift cards and cash. Other popular gifts include ginseng, honey, health products, massage chairs, toiletries, and food gift sets composed of tuna, spam, hangwa, dried fish or fruits.

Another crucial part of Seollal preparation, especially for long-distance travelers, is travel arrangements. Many choose to travel by train, and reserve tickets accordingly well in advance, in order to avoid heavy traffic that often doubles their travel time. Still, others insist on traveling by car or bus. Either way, journey home during Seollal can be as exciting as it is stressful.

Last but not least, as is true on many occasions, food during Seollal is taken very seriously. Families spend the entire day before Seollal preparing food to be used as offerings to ancestors as well as to be served to the family members. The most representative food is tteokguk (rice cake soup); others include galbijjim (braised short ribs), japchae (glass noodles with sautéed vegetables), pancakes, hangwa (traditional sweets and cookies), as well as a dozen other side dishes made with various kinds of vegetables, meat and fish. Many Koreans believe that the taste and appearance of ritual foods determines their ancestors’ level of satisfaction, and thus prepare them with great care. While food preparation has traditionally been women’s work, more families today divide up the responsibilities among their members, or simply hire holiday catering services.

Seollal Day> Ancestral Rites and Traditional Games!

The morning of Seollal begins with an ancestral rite. Family members, dressed in brand new hanbok (traditional clothes), gather in front of the ritual table, and set it with an ancestral tablet and dishes of ritual foods according to the laws of ancestral rites. Once set, the rite begins with deep bows as greetings to the ancestor spirits, and proceeds with offerings and prayers, before ending with bidding farewell to the spirits.

Following the rite, everyone eats the ritual foods. Tteokguk (rice cake soup) is the main food of Seollal, and eating it is believed to add a year to one’s age. People often ask each other, “How many servings of tteokguk have you had?” as a fun way to ask each other’s age.

After the meal, the younger generations of a family pay respect to their elders by taking a deep bow, and by presenting them with gifts. The elders, then, offer their blessings and wishes for a prosperous year. Children often receive sebaetdon (New Year’s money) as a Seollal gift. For the remainder of the day, family members play traditional folk games, eat more, and share stories.

What do people do for fun on Seollal?

Seollal is an opportunity for the entire family to engage in fun activities together. The most common activities are yutnori, a board game that involves throwing four wooden sticks, and go-stop, a card game that uses hwatu (flower cards) to score as many points as possible in order to win. Such traditional games as jegichagi (hacky-sack), neoltwiggi (see-saw), tuho (arrow toss), and yeonnaligi (kite flying) are also widely played at public and recreational parks. Finally, families wind down by going to a theater or watching Seollal Specials on TV.

An alternative to practicing traditional Seollal customs is going on family trips during the holiday season. Some of the most popular Seollal destinations are spa and ski resorts. Additionally, such tourist sites as folk villages, royal palaces and amusement parks also hold special events for families on Seollal.

Why is 2012 the “Year of the Dragon”?

Each year is represented by one of the 12 zodiac signs, which take the form of animals known as sibijisin, and the 12-year cycle rotates. When a new year dawns, people, especially the elders, analyze the relationship between their birth year zodiac sign and the new year’s sign to find out their fortune. According to the zodiac system, the year 2012 is the Year of the Dragon.

Dragon, the fifth animal in the system, represents hope and courage. Though ostentatious at times, people born in the Year of the Dragon are active, adventurous, pioneering, romantic and generous. Their cheerful spirit is contagious and encouraging.

Since when have Koreans been eating Tteokguk, or sliced rice pasta soup? Historians and folk scholars don't know for sure. But what is certain is that Tteokguk has been eaten on Lunar New Year's Day for a very long time, being recorded as a necessity for the Charye, a traditional ceremony to thank the ancestors, in documents from the late Chosun Dynasty.

Tteokguk in the past was a special dish. It was not easy to make rice pasta at a time of the year when rice was rare, and shaping it into round sticks from which the disks are sliced for the Tteokguk was not easy either. Today, anyone can easily buy rice pasta at the supermarket, but in the past making it was a laborious task that took at least three days.

Why do Koreans eat white Tteokguk on New Year's Day? The first day of the new year is a new start for all creation, and people started eating Tteokguk made from white rice to stress the day's pure and solemn nature, some say. Opinions differ, however, why the rice pasta is round. Some say the disks mimic the shape of coins, to bring prosperity, others that they symbolize the sun. Koreans believe they will be a year older only after eating Tteokguk.

Before beef became a common ingredient, pheasant meat was used, or chicken to replace pheasant. The Korean proverb "Chicken instead of pheasant," which has a similar meaning to "If you can't get a horse, ride a cow," originates here. For the health-conscious, 640 ml of Tteokguk has about 457 kcal, more than a standard serving of Ramen (443 kcal) calories, according to the National Rural Living Science Institute -- which is why Tteokguk is sometimes less welcome today.

◆ How to Make It

The following is the recipe given in a collection of Chosun Dynasty court dishes. It serves four.

- Ingredients : Five sticks of rice pasta, thinly sliced (750 g), half a soup bone, beef (100 g), one egg, soy sauce, one spring onion, two cloves of garlic, a sheet of laver.

- To flavor the beef: one spoonful of soy sauce, two teaspoons chopped spring onion, one teaspoon sesame oil, a little ground pepper.

1. Slice the rice pasta.

2. Boil the soup bone until the soup turns white.

3. Spice minced beef and fry.

4. Take the bone out of the soup and continue to simmer after adding minced garlic and soy sauce.

5. Add the sliced rice pasta. When the pasta floats up to the surface and is soft enough, add egg and sliced green onion.

6. Serve in a bowl with cooked beef and laver on top.

JCE’s most famous sports games, “Freestyle”, “Freestyle Football”, and “Freestyle 2″, were all brought together for the “Freestyle Sports” brand. After choosing Korea’s greatest girl group Girls’ Generation as their main model for the brand, they have quickly gained attention.

“Freestyle Sports” updated the games with Girls’ Generation characters – “Freestyle” with Tiffany, Yuri, and Sooyoung, “Freestyle Football” with Sunny, Yoona, and Seohyun, and “Freestyle 2″ with Taeyeon, Jessica, and Hyoyeon characters.

They held an event for all three games simultaneously, distributing one free Girls’ Generation character to users. At another event, limited posters and Girls’ Generation packages were given away on a first-come-first-serve basis.

So how do the main models, Girls’ Generation, feel about the sports game? In this interview, we listened to their feelings, future plans, and resolutions.

-How do you feel about becoming the main models for “Freestyle Sports”?

We were able to meet with everyone through “Freestyle Sports” this winter. Basketball and soccer are all sports that are popular in Korea. We are well aware of other girl groups participating in “Freestyle” and “Freestyle Football”. We have also heard that we are the first girl group to work with the newly released “Freestyle 2″. We’re happy about the meaningful opportunity to become the first girl group to have characters for “Freestyle 2″. Our hearts flutter just imagining that Girls’ Generation will be shown doing difficult dunks, making three-pointers, and making volley shots.

-Three members were divided as models for each game. Was there a certain criteria?

While working with “Freestyle Sports”, we each had one keyword that we had to express. Yoona’s was “challenge”, Sooyoung’s was “delight”, Yuri’s was “competition”, Hyoyeon and Jessica had “match/showdown”, Taeyeon and Sunny’s was “passion”, and Tiffany and Seohyun’s was “victory”. We first divided the members by the keywords that would match well with each other. Three member characters have been divided for each game right now, but users should be able to see all nine members for each game soon.

-Was there anything interesting that happened during the Freestyle Sports CF shoot?

Ah! There was a member who found an unexpected talent while filming! There were a lot of scenes where members had to throw basketballs and kick soccer balls during the “Freestyle Sports” shoot. Of them, the member who left an impression was Jessica. At first, the way she was holding the ball was awkward. However, after shooting a few times, she was surprisingly really good. It was to the point where we were saying we found Jessica’s unexpected, hidden basketball skills through this CF filming. The atmosphere was great, with the staff members cheering every time she made a shot.

-Have you played the game?

We don’t have a lot of time to spend alone when preparing for promotions or an album. It’s difficult finding time for a hobby other than dancing or vocal practice. There are members who played games in the past, so we do have a bit of interest in them. We like casual games in particular. ”Freestyle”, “Freestyle Football”, “Freestyle 2″ are games that we have heard a lot about, but haven’t been able to play ourselves. We did see staff playing during the CF shoot, and it looked really fun. Since it is a sports game where you have to split into teams, it would be really fun for our competitive members.

-Any promotional plans as models for Freestyle Sports?

Because we are models for “Freestyle Sports”, gamers will be able to see us in the “Freestyle” series every day. We will also meet users through television ads and through online and offline contests. Please give Girls’ Generation characters in the “Freestyle” series lots and lots of love!

-Any future Girls’ Generation’s activities or plans?

We had a happy ending to the year with all the love shown for our third album, “The Boys”, in and outside of Korea. Fans will be able to see a dynamic Girls’ Generation.

-Lastly, a word as Freestyle’s models.

(Yuri) ”Hello, this is Girls’ Generation’s Yuri. Look at me flying around the basketball court in ‘Freestyle’!”

(Sooyoung) ”Hello, this is Girls’ Generation’s Sooyoung. Pick my Sooyoung character a lot!”

(Tiffany) ”Hello, this is Tiffany. Did you hear that us nine members of Girls’ Generation have fallen deeply for basketball and soccer this winter? Give ‘Freestyle Sports’, where our characters will appear, lots of love. And please give my Tiffany character lots of love!”

(Sunny) ”Hello, this is Sunny! A cute Sunny character appears in ‘Freestyle Sports’! Are you ready to be surprised? Look forward to the bouncy play of Sunny that you can’t see on stage!”

Singer and actor Kim Hyung Jun (25yrs old) on 7th 1st broadcast of KBS drama 'Glowing She' acting as Top Star Kang Min character. "Are the potential love cells wake up?" Kim Hyung Jun expressed the wish of wanting to be out of the single idea. Curious of him wanting to have the kind of love that happen in the dramas. In reality, like in the drama if there is someone like the writer or anyone similar for him to pursue, what will he do?

"I will accept if I have feelings for her. Doing the same thing is not a bad idea. If we want to see each other we dont need to differeniate between an artiste or just a normal person. However, compared to artistes, I would wish to meet people from other fields. And also, if we were to get into relationship, there wouldnt be a need to sneak around to meet each other. Cos I wanna each other easily and without fear."

Wishing to fall in love Kim Hyung Jun bed scene with Seong Hyo Bin during the 1st broadcast of the drama also shocked the fans. Bed scene is usually the kind where you will not get to see the romantic unconventional nature on TV. For 1st timer, Kim Hyung Jun also suffered terribly for this high level acting of bed scene.

"I was very shy while shooting for the bed scene. I was very concerned about the people reactions around me. My mum, family and also those who know me have said that the scene is not bad. Initially was very worried what will the fans think, but was surprised that they all accepted coolly. Dont know whether is it due the the growing age of the fans thus their reactions are not as drastic as before."

While active in the actor activities Kim Hyung Jun is actually a singer. Seeing him immerse so deeply into acting, cant help but think that is he changing another route, will he forget that he is singer Kim Hyung Jun. "Recently I am really fascinated with acting indeed. But I will never ever give up music and being a singer. Even though I have released an album last year, but there are still alot of parts which I did not do enough. Debuted during the late 10's singer Kim Hyung Jun has unwittingly become the youth of the mid 20s. Asya ve tüm dünyada aktif olan Girls’ Generation, dijital Golden Disk Ödülleri'nde daesang aldi ve sicak gözyaslari döktü. Girls’ Generation, “Into the New World” ile çaylak ödülünü alirken, ilk adimini 2007 yilinda Golden Disk Ödülleri sahnesinde yapti. 2009 yilinda, “Tell Me Your Wish” ile dijital Golden Disk daesang ödülünü aldi ve ayrica ertesi yil da “Hoot” ile daesang ödülünü aldi. In 2009, they received the digital Golden Disk daesang with “Tell Me Your Wish”, and also received the daesang the following year with “Hoot”. They were able to receive the digital daesang for “The Boys” once again this year. After the award ceremony ended, we met with the members, who were hugging one another, enjoying their happiness backstage.

-What were your thoughts when you were called for the daesang?

(Taeyeon) ”I’m really thankful. Because they called us in Japanese, I didn’t hear it well at first and was taken aback. It turned out they had called Girls’ Generation. (laughs) I can’t stop smiling even now. I’m reminded of last year. We shed tears of joy last year, too. I’m happy they gave it to us again this year.”

-Did you predict your win?

(Tiffany) ”I wanted to receive it. (laughs) But I was nervous because there were other talented and great singers. I told myself I’d be satisfied even without an award because we worked hard last year. But I’m thankful we were given the award.”

-Is there anyone you’re thinking of right now?

(Sooyoung) ”I would have to say our fans are the first to come to mind. We were able to receive this award thanks to our fans. I’m thankful.”

-The members were all sad when receiving the daesang last year because Tiffany wasn’t present due to an injured leg. This year must have been more special because you received it all together.

(Tiffany) ”It felt really good. I think I was the happiest and most excited. I’m happy being with my members and can only think of working harder.”

-What kind of year was 2011 like for Girls’ Generation?

(Jessica) ”It was a very busy year. It was a year where we could meet many fans overseas. If they wait a little, we will go to meet them again.”

-You received the rookie award in 2007, digital daesang in 2009, and Golden Disk daesang in 2010. You recieved the daesang again this year, as well as a bonsang. You have a deep connection with Golden.

(Yuri) ”It’s a real honor. There were many good things after receiving the awards. I think this year will be another happy year.”

-During the past 3 years, you didn’t miss a single daesang, getting the digital daesang one year, the Golden Disk daesang the next, and the digital daesang again this year. Girls’ Generation is the second singer to receive the daesang for three consecutive years following Kim Gunmo.

(Yoona) ”I got goosebumps after hearing that just now. Ah, it feels electrifying hearing ‘three consecutive years’ that I’m getting goosebumps. Thank you, and we will work hard to show good results next year with great performances.”

-You’ve been continuing to rise after your debut. But I think there would have been times where you were tired as an individual. When was that?

(Tiffany) ”There were always hard times, but I was able to overcome those hard times because of my members. I’m thankful to my members.”

-Plans for 2012?

(Seohyun) ”We’ve been having a Japan arena tour since last year. We are planning on continuing our concerts this year. While going around our arena tour, I’ve gained a dream to have a world tour. I want to meet with fans often.”

-A word to fans all over the world.

“Thank you for giving us such a big award. 2012 is also Girls’ Generation!”

That was a scene from the animation “Leafie, a Hen into the Wild.” The locally produced animation film was released last summer and during its two-month run it had moved the hearts of countless Korean families.

The film is based on the best-selling children’s book of the same title, an adventurous and moving tale of the hen Leafie escaping from the poultry farm into the wider world outside the farm. “Leafie, a Hen into the Wild” was the first film in the Korean animation film history to break past one million ticket sales, ultimately drawing 2.2 million moviegoers. The sales figures for the original story and the DVD version following the successful movie run have skyrocketed. Moreover, the film has done exceptionally well in foreign markets, demonstrating the potential for Korean animation films as a new hallyu content. Today we’ll take an in-depth look at the film and its cast of colorful avian and mammalian characters.

It took us a long time to make the film, but I’m ecstatic that the response was overwhelming. It has been frustrating that animation films released during children’s summer vacation were largely Japanese or American ones. But this year our film stood out among all the Japanese and American competitors and inspired countless children and families. I was so moved by how much people liked the movie.

That was the film’s director, Oh Sung-yoon. He has shown hope to other Korean animation producers that making an animation film doesn’t have to be a financial bust.

The story begins at a chicken farm. There chickens are kept in cramped cages and fed on artificially produced feed delivered by automated machines. Their sole purpose is to lay eggs and be slaughtered for human consumption when time comes. But the hen Leafie wants to defy that sad destiny.

After finding out that malnourished chickens get thrown out of the poultry farm, Leafie starves herself, getting thinner and thinner. Her desire to escape is realized and she is dumped into a pit outside the farm. But it’s short-lived freedom. The real peril begins now.

Leafie is saved by a mallard duck wanderer from a dangerously close encounter with a vicious weasel. Then she becomes a surrogate mother to an egg laid by a female duck that was killed by a weasel. Leafie takes care of the egg, thinking about all the eggs she had laid without having had a chance to brood them, and out hatches Greenie, a baby Leafie has always wanted. Despite being of different species, Leafie and Greenie face the world together as mother and son.

Leafie is a single hen raising a duckling. She wants to show Greenie the rest of the world and heads toward the swampland in the east where it is safe from dangerous predators.

Their trek through the dark forest is the favorite scene of Director Oh. The forest is warm and alive with various life forms yet fraught with heartless dangers of nature. One can’t help but smile at the brave and curiosity-filled journey of Leafie and Greenie. Here’s Director Oh Sung-yoon again.

Leafie and Greenie have to pass through a forest on their way to the swamp. That scene is shown in the movie poster, but there was no such scene in the original story. I think the scene, although it was very short, was very well executed and harmonized well with the music. The scene represented the rite of passage, how nature accepts this unlikely mother and son. I think it is really well-made.

The hen and the duckling face numerous obstacles and learn to overcome them together. Leafie watches in pride and joy, but with a tinge of sadness, as Greenie learns to swim and fly on his own, and eventually joins a flock of his own kind.

After she sends Greenie off to join his own kind, Leafie chooses to throw herself to the hungry young weasels, bringing tears to the eyes of moviegoers.

There were lots of controversies about making the animation film’s end so sad. But Director Oh argues that the ending is not all sad.

If I didn’t end this on a sad note, I thought I couldn’t describe how Leafie finally found her place in nature. I had to make the film from Leafie’s position. That’s why I couldn’t give up on the scene in which Leafie sacrificed herself for the young weasels. I had the mother weasel shed tears at the end for Leafie’s death. I also hoped that the audience could understand how the weasel felt.

The success of the 2D animation film was quite impressive, given that the current film market is dominated by 3D and 4D live action movies. The highest-grossing animation film in Korean history had been the restored digital version of “Robot Taekwon V” released in 2007, which recorded 720,000 ticket sales. But “Leafie” broke that record in just eleven days and succeeded in drawing 2.2 million moviegoers even though Hollywood blockbusters muscled it out of all-day screening to restrict the showings to only daytime. “Leafie, a Hen into the Wild” is a heart-warming and gripping children’s tale that will live long in our memories because of its sad and realistic ending. Hwang Sun-mi, the original author of the book, also had high expectations for the film.

On the stage is the world-famous musical hit Mamma Mia. Not an empty seat in the house, the musical production of ABBA’s smash hits has the audience up on their feet and singing together with the cast.

Sorry to see the curtain fall, the audience encourages the performers to stay for one more song with louder applauses and cheers.

- The emotions I feel about the songs are the same so many decades later. Applause came naturally, because the performance was so exciting.
- I used to love ABBA’s songs. I felt like I was back in my student days. It was great.

Mamma Mia is a musical production composed of the Swedish pop group ABBA’s top hits. Since its debut performance in London in April 1999, Mamma Mia has been a worldwide smash hit and has even spawned a feature film. Korean audiences have loved it as well ever since it was first performed locally in January 2004. The production has garnered rave reviews and audience response since then and December 10th of last year marked its 1,000th performance. Mamma Mia broke the 1,000th performance mark in the shortest time for a large-scale production presented in thousand-plus-seat theaters. Musical critic and Soonchunhyang University Professor Won Jong-won says that is a significant achievement in the Korean musical history.

In Korea stage musicals were thought of as a neglected side branch of classic theater play. So, it was practically unheard of for a musical to have a long run, not to mention high profits. Most of the productions were small in scale and could not make enough money. But Mamma Mia demonstrated through its one thousand showings that a musical production can run for a long time and be profitable.

Mamma Mia has become one of the most beloved musicals in Korean history. Then, what made the production so appealing to the Korean audience?

Mamma Mia takes place on a small island in the Mediterranean. Its main characters are Donna, the owner of a small inn on the island but once an aspiring lead vocalist in a group, and her soon-to-be-married daughter, Sophie.

After peeking inside Donna’s old journal, Sophie sets out to find her biological father before her wedding.

At Sophie’s invitation, three men from Donna’s past arrive at the island before the wedding. Their arrival puts Donna at odds with Sophie, but they eventually respect each other’s lives and make up their differences. The musical ends with Sophie finding her real father and Donna reliving her glory days with her singer friends.

Mamma Mia in Korea has set records for 1.3 million tickets sold and 800 billion won in accumulated sales. Here’s Seensee Company CEO Park Myung-sung to explain more.

Mamma Mia practically wrote the history of Korean stage musicals. The debut production alone cost 10 billion won and it ran for over three months at the Opera Theater of the Seoul Arts Center with a 97% seat occupancy. It was particularly amazing that the production was able to capture mature audiences, especially middle-aged homemakers, who were not that interested in musical theater. Mamma Mia opened the era of Korean musical boom.

The first reason Mamma Mia grew so popular in Korea is common in all Mamma Mia productions around the world – 22 of ABBA’s greatest hits. Here’s Musical critic and Soonchunhyang University Professor Won Jong-won again.

The secret to Mamma Mia’s popularity is its music. People are already familiar with ABBA’s music, and that familiarity allows people to like it even more. Since people no longer can see ABBA perform live, the musical helps relieve their longing for the Swedish pop group.

Familiar tunes and a solid plot also made the huge success of Mamma Mia possible, says Musical critic and Soonchunhyang University Professor Won Jong-won.

The musical had an edge, because it was based on famous songs, but that was not all there was to the musical’s success. A production has to have an added element to boost the enjoyment of watching it. In Mamma Mia’s case it was a solid plot line that complemented the songs very well. The lyrics were not changed at all, but fit the story perfectly. The witty incorporation of the songs in the plot amazed the audiences in the English-speaking countries. So, the original story as well as the songs made Mamma Mia such a big success.

Until now we talked about the common appeals in all Mamma Mia productions. Then, what is the musical’s appeal in Korea with very short musical history? Seensee Company CEO Park Myung-sung says that the Korean version of Mamma Mia has its own charm points.

It was undoubtedly a risky move to present Mamma Mia in Korea, because we weren’t sure how Koreans would react to it. The biggest factor in the success of Mamma Mia in Korea is the script was adapted and the lyrics were changed to fit the sentiments of Korean people. For instance, the relationship between the mother and the daughter was kept very dry in overseas productions, but in Korea the mother-daughter ties were played up to suit Korean people’s inclination for heartwarming family love.

Furthermore, inspiring acting by Korean actors helped the audience focus completely on the musical. Here’s Musical critic and Soonchunhyang University Professor Won Jong-won to explain more.

The acting of Korean actors is already world-class. Koreans are very talented in many areas. So Korean musical actors and actresses were able to carry out exceptional level of dancing, acting, and singing. I believe the popularity of Mamma Mia in Korea can be attributed largely to the competence of Korean actors.

On the day of Sophie’s wedding, Donna brushes Sophie’s hair and helps put her wedding dress one. The scene where Donna sings “Slipping through My Fingers” is one of the most touching scenes in the musical in which only Korean mothers can identify with. Such strong emotional involvement drives actors and actresses to give their all on the stage, says actress Choi Jung-won in the role of Donna and actor Sung Ki-yun in that of Sam.

- The original cast of Mamma Mia told me that the dramatic elements were alive in the Korean production. Nobody cried after watching the overseas productions, but the Korean Mamma Mia made people cry. I was told that Koreans have a very strong energy.
- Korean actors tend to be very passionate and emotional. Even a simple idea is amplified to reflect a deeper emotion, which is what sets the Korean version apart from foreign ones. I can assure you that you will not only enjoy the songs and dance, but also completely immerse yourself in the drama.

- I love how passionate the actors were. I was able to take in all their energy. This is my second time seeing the musical and I was so moved.
- I saw the Broadway production of Mamma Mia last week. I think the Korean production is more energetic and has better acting. I was really amazed at how good the Korean show was.

Not only was the cast completely immersed in the musical, but the production staff who had been with the team through the whole one thousand performances was behind it 100%. It is no surprise that the production enjoys such a long run. Here’s Seensee Company CEO Park Myung-sung again.

The number of the Mamma Mia production staff stands at 127, including the actors, musicians, and technicians. These 127 people have been together for almost eight years. Good acting is only one element in a successful production. Only when all 127 people work together as one and create a flawless ensemble can the production win rave reviews.

Sung Ki-yun, who plays one of Donna’s old lovers, Sam, has never missed a day over the past one thousand performances. He is the model of perfect attendance.

I have the perfect attendance record. I haven’t missed a performance yet. Lee Kyung-min and Jeon Su-kyung have also been with the team since the beginning, racking up 900 performances. Such involvement of actors is what makes it possible to maintain the musical’s high quality. There are other smaller plays that have been on for a long time, but people worry about whether they will be as good as the original cast. Those who come to see Mamma Mia doesn’t worry about how the current cast compares with the original one, because we are the same.

The success of the Korean Mamma Mia production has galvanized the Korean stage musical industry. The know-how of the Korean production was passed to the Chinese version of Mamma Mia, which has reaped huge success in China as well.

The Chinese production of Mamma Mia was made by a Chinese government agency, a Chinese media company, and a Korean entertainment company, CJ E&M. Here’s CJ E&M Planning Team leader Choi Jae-won.

Although the U.S. and the U.K. are big musical markets, China chose to work with Korea, because the Korean performing arts market has grown exponentially over the past ten years. Since the musical genre gained big audience in the early 2000s, many Koreans say they see a musical or a live performance at the end of the year. Although the musical market is huge in the U.S. or the U.K., the stage musicals are considered rather old and passé, while Korea’s musical market is young and dynamic. Since China and Korea are in the same cultural sphere, China felt that they could take advantage of Korea’s know-how in this genre. That led to the joint venture and the success of Mamma Mia in China.

The Chinese language version of Mamma Mia debuted in Shanghai in July and is enjoying an occupancy rate of 80%. Korean musical production companies are beginning to demonstrate their competitiveness in the world market. Musical critic and Soonchunhyang University Professor Won Jong-won even argues that Korea may become the Broadway of Asia.

The Korean musical market has an immense potential. It is performing so well as to be a candidate for the Broadway of Asia. Since The Phantom of the Opera was first presented in 2001, Korea’s musical sales have grown 17 to 18% every year, an unprecedentedly rapid growth. If we used our knowledge and experiences accumulated over the past decade, the dream of becoming the next Broadway may not be that farfetched.

Just as Korean dramas and pop songs are doing right now, Korean musicals may soon emerge as a new cultural content that will captivate the global audience.
