Koreans used to be the ones crazy about entertainers from overseas. High school girls tried to break into the sold-out 1969 Richard Cliff concert. When New Kids on the Block came in 1992, Korean fans stampeded, injuring 70 and killing one. The tables have turned. Overseas fans now rave about Korean singers and their music. For instance, French fans rallied outside a sold-out SM Entertainment concert featuring Girl’s Generation and Super Junior in June.

Taeyang’s newest album became the top seller on iTunes one day after being uploaded, and Korean music and choreography are plagiarized by some Southeast Asian singers. 

Experts say the lengthy training at Korean entertainment companies plays a decisive role. It took eight years for Jo Kwon, a member of 2AM, to debut as a singer.

Yüzlerce kablolu TV kanali olmasina ragmen, onlar özel programlar yayinliyor. Yemekle ilgili TV sovlari ve film veya TV dizileriyle ilgili OCN sovlari. Çesitlilik için,genel program yayini amaciyla dört yeni TV agi kuruldu. Kurulustan önce yalnizca 3 bölgesel yayin kurulusu- KBS, MBC ve SBS- genel program kullaniyordu.

Although there are hundreds of cable TV channels, they broadcast specialized programs. Food TV airs shows related to food, and OCN shows relate to movies or TV series. To diversify, four new TV networks launched this month to offer general programming content. Before the launch, only three terrestrial broadcasters - KBS, MBC and SBS - offered general programming. 

The new channels rose to the surface after 2009 legislation allowed industrial capital and newspaper organizations to enter the television sector. Among the new channels, JTBC is affiliated with the JoongAng Ilbo, TV Chosun with the Chosun Ilbo, Channel A with the Dong-a Ilbo and MBN with Maeil Business Newspaper

Two JTBC dramas - “Padam Padam,” a love story about Jung Woo-sung (“Athena: Goddess of War,” 2011) and Han Ji-min (“Detective K,” 2011) - have gained the highest viewing rates, 2.151 percent, according to AGB Nielsen Media Research. No other channel’s programs have broken the 2 percent mark. 

Average viewing rates for all four channels are lower than 1 percent. Many worry the new channels will not take root in the competitive TV industry, but some say that it’s too early to decide if the launch is successful.

Filmin ardindan merkezi yönetim, engelli çocuklara tecavüz eden suçlular için maksimum hapis cezasini 3 yildan 5 yila kadar artirdi. Hükümet, herhangi bir engelliye cinsel tacizde bulunan suçlularin her zaman elektronik ayak bilekligi seklinde monitör takacaklarini da duyurdu.

A film called “Dogani” (“The Crucible”), based on a novel by Gong Ji-young, stirred up enormous outrage among Koreans this year. The film tells the true story of sexual abuse at a school in Gwangju. Teachers at Inhwa School allegedly raped hearing-impaired students. Over 4.5 million viewers saw the film, and even though the original case closed in 2006 with little media attention, public outcry both on and offline led to a new police investigation. Early in November, many of the young victims were also brought to Gangnam Severance Hospital in southern Seoul to get psychological treatment. 

After some tests, six of the victims were diagnosed with serious post-traumatic disorders, according to the police. 

Following the film, the central government raised the maximum jail sentence for criminals convicted of sexually assaulting disabled children from three years to five. The government also announced that criminals found to have sexually attacked any disabled people will wear electronic anklet monitors at all times.

Çeviri haklari 31 ülkeye satildi ve roman bunlarin 18'inde basildi. Kitap, yazarin Ingilizce'ye çevrilen ilk eseriydi.

A Korean novel paved a new avenue to global readers this year.

Shin Kyung-sook’s “Please Look After Mom” was translated into English in April. 

It was selected as an “Editor’s Best 10” on Amazon.com in June, and it placed second on Israel’s best-seller list in only four weeks after its release. In Taiwan, it ranked third. Translation rights have been sold in 31 countries, and the novel has been published in 18. The book was the author’s first to be translated into English. 

The novel is about an elderly mom going missing after coming to visit her four children on her birthday, prompting the whole family to search for her. As they search, each family member realizes just how much they have neglected her and how much they stand to lose if she can’t be found. The novel is told in four sections, narrated by a daughter, a son, the husband and the mother. 

Shin’s novel is nominated for the 2011 Man Asian Literary Prize, competing with bestselling books from Japan, Iran, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

The most shocking entertainment news of 2011 was the discovery of rock star Seo Taiji’s secret marriage to actress E Jiah (“Athena: Goddess of War,” 2011) 14 years ago. The marriage became public after E filed a lawsuit for alimony and division of property in January. 

Seo’s fans felt betrayed as the 39-year-old has flatly denied speculation that he was married and joked that he’s “married to music.”

E demanded 5 billion won ($4.33 million) for division of property and 500 million won in alimony from Seo after they failed to reach a divorce settlement. 

According to E’s legal representative, the whole process caused E and the people around her so much pain after it became public that she dropped the suit. The two negotiated a settlement in July.

Before the marriage topped the entertainment headlines, E was spotted with actor Jung Woo-sung in Paris in March. The two admitted to being lovers at the time.

Reality TV shows to pick aspiring stars boomed this year. 

The third season of “Superstar K,” one of Korea’s first audition shows, chose Ulala Session, featuring stomach cancer sufferer Lim Yoon-taek and his quartet, for the top prize. “Star Audition: The Great Birth” on MBC also entered its second season with upbeat viewer ratings. 

SBS launched “K-Pop Star,” featuring celebrity judges such as BoA and producers Park Jin-young of JYP Entertainment and Yang Hyun-suk of YG Entertainment. The show considers a variety of talents, including dancing and singing, to pick winners. 

Other broadcast stations launched similar shows that have auditions for everything from acting to comedy, musicals and figure skating.

Among all cultural genres, ballet has been the hardest for ordinary Koreans to approach. This year, however, performances enjoyed unprecedented sellouts. Some attribute this to the 2010 film “Black Swan.” Riding the wave of popularity, private institutes are now packed with young dancers. Even adults, including males, simply want to learn it as a hobby. 

Tickets sold out for the French classical ballet “Giselle,” which the Korea National Ballet staged for four days in February. It was the first sold-out show in the troupe’s 49-year history. 

When KNB staged “Romeo and Juliet,” accompanied by the prestigious Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra led by Maestro Chung Myung-whun, in late October, average seat occupation was at 98 percent for four days, the highest figure for a modern ballet by the national company. “Onegin” by Universal Ballet Company also saw the rate at 80 percent.

Güneydogu Asya'da k-pop patlamasi ve Kore dalgasinin tekrar canlanmasinin ardindan Kore Turizm Organizasyonu, 2011 yili için 10 milyon turist beklediklerini bu yilin basinda açiklamisti.

Bu rakami artirmak için KTO, yilin 4. çeyreginde kisa vadeli pazarlama için yaklasik 3 milyar won (2.6 milyon dolar) tahsis etti. En önemli olay turistlerin Hallyu yildizlariyla belli yerleri ziyaret ettikleri, kasimdaki “Hallyu Haftasi”ydi. Aralik ayinin ilk haftasinda KTO, Kore'ye ilk kez 9 milyon turistin gelisini kutladi.

Bir KTO yetkilisi Kim Jong-hoon “Bu yil yabanci turist sayisinin 9.8 milyon olmasini bekliyoruz, hedefimizden biraz daha az fakat yine de çok büyük bir basari.” dedi.

On the back of a K-pop boom and resurging Korean Wave in Southeast Asia, the Korea Tourism Organization announced early this year that it plans to attract 10 million foreign tourists in 2011. 

To boost figures, the KTO allocated around 3 billion won ($2.6 million) for short-term marketing in the fourth quarter. The highlight was “Hallyu Week” in November, when tourists visited destinations with Hallyu stars. During the first week of December, the KTO celebrated the arrival of 9 million foreign tourists to Korea for the first time ever. 

“We expect the tally for foreign tourist this year to be around 9.8 million, slightly less than our goal, but nevertheless, a big achievement,” said Kim Jong-hoon, an official at the KTO.

Kore Film Endüstrisi artik her zamankinden daha çesitli. Yüksek bütçeli, hasilat rekorlari kiran birçok film arasinda birkaç bagimsiz Kore filmi, 1 milyon izleyicisi olan ticari fimlerle kiyaslanacak bir rakam olan 10.000 izleyiciye ulasti.

The Korean film industry was more diverse than ever before. Amid an array of high-budget blockbuster films, a couple of Korean independent films achieved the10,000-audience mark, a figure compared to 1 million viewers for commercial films. 

The rise of independent films started with “Re-encounter” in February. The title literally reflects the plot, as it centers on a young couple and their re-encounter. In high school, a boy and girl fall in love, but the boy leaves her after the girl becomes pregnant. 

Five years later, they meet again and look for their child who they believe has been adopted. Another coming-of-age film, “Bleak Night,” in March also received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. The film stayed at the box office for about three months in a world where even blockbusters screen less than a month. 

The film tells the story of three high school boys, attracting more than 20,000 viewers. “The Journals of Musan” joined the winning spree in April. 

By spotlighting lives of North Korean defectors in the South, the film brought more than seven awards to newbie director Park Jung-bum in and outside of Korea. Other than these, the gay film “Miracle on Jongno Street,” musical film “Play” and adult animation “The King of Pigs” deserve to be dubbed indie films of this year. If you haven’t seen them, just pick one. It will surely please you.

The hairstyle of Japanese actor Odagiri Joe, who recently attended the Korean movie preview for ‘My Way‘, is becoming a hot topic amongst local fashionistas. Coined the ’4-D Mohican’, this eye-catching look is both rebellious and chic.

Of course, not everyone has to shave off one side of their hair. Won Bin opted for a more immaculate look by neatly trimming his sideburns while allowing the hair at the top of his head to stay long.

The effect may not be as dramatic as Odagiri Joe’s, but it’s more cosmopolitan and adaptable into everyday life.

Another variation of the mohawk is found in these profile shots of Jay Park and Big Bang‘s Taeyang.
