DUP Chief Vows to Consolidate Opposition

DBP Baskani, Muhalefeti Toplama Sözü Verdi

Ana muhalefet Demokratik Birlesmis Parti (DBP) baskani Han Myeong-sook, partisinin muhalefet güçlerini aktif olarak kuvvetlendirecegini söyledi.

Han, pazartesi günü partinin yüksek sura toplantisi sirasinda, bu tür bir blogu insanlarin da istedigini ekleyerek muhalefet güçleri koalisyonunun genel ve baskanlik seçimlerini kazanmak için önemli oldugunu söyledi.

Baskan, genel seçimler için aday belirlerken muhalefet güçlerini birlestirmek üzere Birlesmis Ilerici Partiyle yapilacak bir görüsme sonucuna öncelik taniyacagini söyledi.

Han, DBP'nin genel seçimlere parti adaylarini seçecek olan seçmen kurulu üyelerinin alinmasi için pazartesi günü baslayan girisimlerine insanlarin aktif katilimini istedi.

Chairwoman of the main opposition Democratic United Party (DUP), Han Myeong-sook, says her party will actively work to consolidate opposition forces.

Han said during a meeting of the party’s supreme council on Monday that a coalition of opposition forces is key to winning the general and presidential elections, adding such a bloc has also been demanded by the people.

The chairwoman said she will prioritize the results of a negotiation under way with the Unified Progressive Party on consolidating opposition forces while selecting candidates for the general elections.

Han urged for the people’s active participation in the DUP’s efforts that began Monday to recruit electoral college members who will select party candidates for the general elections.

Lawmakers Fail to Follow Through on 40% of Campaign Pledges

Vekiller, Kampanya Vaatlerinin %40'ini Yerine Getirmiyor

18. Ulusal Meclis vekillerinin seçim vaatlerinin yaklasik %40'ini yerine getirmedigini gösteren yeni bir arastirma yayinlandi.

Yerli sivil grup "The Good Law" vekillerin vaatlerinin ortalama uygulanma oraninin %59'da kaldigini söyledi.

Sivil grup, oransal temsilcilik sistemiyle seçilen vekilleri hariç tutarak 18. Ulusal Meclis vekillerinin seçim kampanyalari sirasinda verdikleri 220 vaadi analiz ederek arastirmalarini ortaya koydu.

Incelenen vekiller arasinda 50 kisi %70lik uygulama orani gösterirken 38 kisinin uygulama orani %80in üzerindeydi. Bu sirada, 48 vekil vaatlerinin %40indan daha azini ve 9 vekil %20den azini yerine getirdi.

Uygulama orani %63le bagimsiz vekiller arasinda en yüksekti.

A new study has been released showing that lawmakers of the 18th National Assembly failed to follow through on roughly 40 percent of their election pledges.

Local civic group "The Good Law" says the average implementation rate of pledges by legislators stood at 59 percent.

The civic group reported its findings after analyzing 220 pledges made by lawmakers of the 18th National Assembly during their election campaign, excluding legislators elected under the proportional representation system.

Among the lawmakers surveyed, 50 posted an implementation rate of 70 percent and 38 saw their rate stand over 80 percent. Meanwhile, 48 legislators implemented less than 40 percent of their promises, and nine lawmakers made good on less than 20 percent of their pledges.

The implementation rate was the highest among independent lawmakers at 63 percent.

Lee to Hold 4th Anniversary News Conference

Baskanlik ofisindeki basin konferansinda Lee, ofiste geçen 4 yiliyla ilgili düsüncelerini açiklayacak ve gazetecilerin sorularini yanitlayacak.

Devlet baskaninin, güney Seoul'de emeklilik evi için arsa almasi konusunun yani sira yardimci ve akrabalariyla ilgili tartismali meseleler için özürlerini sunacagi bildirildi.

President Lee Myung-bak will hold a special news conference at 10 a.m. on Wednesday to mark the fourth anniversary of his inauguration.

In the news conference at the presidential office, Lee will express his thoughts regarding the past four years in office and answer to reporters’ questions.

The president will reportedly offer his sincere apology for the contentious issues involving his aides and relatives as well as the controversial purchase of land for his retirement residence in southern Seoul.

Ahead of the news conference, the presidential office held a two-day workshop attended by all of the senior presidential secretaries over the weekend. In the meeting presided over by presidential chief of staff Ha Kum-loul, the aides reportedly reaffirmed their resolution to face any political difficulties head on.

Rival Parties Continue Attacks Ahead of April Elections

Iktidar ve muhalefet partileri, genel seçimlere 2 aydan az süre kalmasiyla birlikte siyasi saldirilarda bulunmaya devam ediyor.

Iktidardaki Saenuri Partisi, ana muhalefet Demokratik Birlesmis Parti baskani Han Myeong-sook ve eski devlet baskani Roh Moo-hyun'u destekleyen diger vekillerin DBP'de önemli kisiler olarak ortaya çiktiklari konusunda açikça suçlamalarda bulundu.

Iktidar partisi, Han'in basbakan olarak görev yaparken Güney Kore-ABD serbest ticaret anlasmasini siddetle destekledigini ancak simdi ana muhalefet partisinin baskani olarak anlasmaya karsi durdugunu söyleyerek Han'in kisiligini sorguladi.

DBP ise Saenuri'nin Acil Durum Liderlik Komitesi baskani Park Geun-hye'nin, görevdeki hükümetin basarisiz politikalari için samimi olarak özür dilemesi gerektigini söyledi.

Bu sirada Saenuri Partisinin, genel seçimde adayligini koymasi için parti tarafindan seçilen bir aday listesini gelecek hafta mümkün oldugunca erken tamamlamasi bekleniyor.

DBP'nin çarsamba günü genel seçimler için bazi adaylarini açiklamasi bekleniyor. Adaylar arasinda, eski DBP danismani Kim Geun-tae'nin esi In Jae-geun da bulunuyor.

Ruling and opposition parties continue to engage in political attacks with the general elections less than two months away.

The ruling Saenuri Party has strongly denounced the head of the main opposition Democratic United Party (DUP), Han Myeong-sook, and other lawmakers who supported late President Roh Moo-hyun and have emerged as key figures in the DUP.

The ruling party questioned Han’s identity, saying she strongly supported the South Korea-U.S. free trade agreement when she served as prime minister but now stands opposed to the deal as head of the main opposition party.

The DUP, on its part, said the head of the Saenuri’s emergency leadership committee, Park Geun-hye, should sincerely apologize for the incumbent government’s failed policies.

Meanwhile, the Saenuri Party is expected to finalize as early as next week a roster of candidates nominated by the party to run in the general elections.

The DUP is expected to reveal some of its nominees for the general elections on Wednesday. Among the candidates is In Jae-geun, the wife of late senior adviser of the DUP, Kim Geun-tae.

Lee Holds Special News Conference, Apologizes for Scandals

Lee Özel Basin Konferansi Düzenledi, Skandallar Için Özür Diledi

Devlet Baskani Lee Myung-bak çarsamba günü görevdeki 4. yili adina özel bir basin konferansi düzenledi. Konusmasinda, yardimcilari ve akrabalarini çevreleyen ahlaksizlik skandallari için kizgin oldugunu söyledi. Bu konu üzerine sinirli ve suskun oldugunu söyledi.

Seoul'un Naegokdong bölgesinde emeklilik sonrasi için bir ev insa etme plani üzerine tartismalara açiklik getirmede ihmalkar oldugunu da kabul etti. Lee, görevinden ayrildiktan sonra 30 yildir yasadigi Nonhyeondong'daki evine dönecegini söyledi.

Devlet baskani, muhalefetin Güney Kore-ABD serbest ticaret anlasmasina itirazini ve Jeju Adasindaki deniz üssü insasi üzerine yorumlarda da bulundu. Ülkenin gelecegi, ekonomik kalkinmasi ve güvenligi için dogru kararlarin verildigini söyledi.

Kuzey Kore ilticacilariyla ilgili olarak, suçlu olmadiklari sürece Çin hükümetinin uluslararasi tüzüge göre konuyu ele almasi gerektigini söyledi. Devlet baskani, Kuzey Kore kaçaklari meselesini çözmek için Pekin'le isbirligini güçlendirecegini vaat etti.

Okullardaki siddet üzerine Lee, ögrencilerin tüm egitimini gelistirmeye yardimci olmak için ülke genelinde okullara birkaç bin sanat ve spor ögretmeninin atanacagini söyledi.

President Lee Myung-bak held a special news conference Wednesday marking his fourth year in office. In the speech, he said he feels so angry about the corruption scandals surrounding his aides and relatives. He said he is frustrated and speechless over this issue.

He also admitted he was negligent in addressing the controversy over a scrapped plan to build his post-retirement residence in Seoul’s Naegokdong area. Lee said that after leaving office he will return to his house in Nonhyeondong where he lived for 30 years.

The president also commented on the opposition’s protest of the Korea-U.S. free trade agreement and the construction of a Navy base on Jeju Island. He said the right decisions were made in the interest of the nation’s future, its economic development and security.

Lee cited remarks main opposition Democratic United Party Chairwoman Han Myeong-sook made during former President Roh Moo-hyun's term in office. He said the chairwoman expressed support for the policies of the FTA and the naval base at that time. The president called for bipartisan cooperation for the sake of national interest.

On inter-Korean relations, he said if North Korea sincerely seeks dialogue, South Korea will greet the North with an open heart anytime and anywhere.

Concerning the issue of North Korean defectors, he said as long as they are not criminals, the Chinese government must handle them according to international norm. The president vowed to strengthen collaboration with Beijing to resolve the issue of North Korean escapees.

On school violence, Lee said several thousand arts and sports teachers will be stationed at schools nationwide to help improve students' overall education.

The president also responded to a question from a citizen posted on a social networking site. Lee was asked about his pro-conglomerate stance, and he stressed that it’s important for businesses to prosper. However, Lee urged conglomerates to refrain from expanding into medium- and small-sized sectors.

Lastly, he called on Korean firms and individuals to seize opportunities in the Middle East as global capital is flowing into this region with oil prices topping 100 dollars a barrel.

Parties Offer Mixed Reactions to President Lee's Speech

Iktidardaki Saenuri Partisinin bir sözcüsü, devlet baskaninin baskanlik ofisi ve iktidar partisi arasindaki iliskinin yeni anlayisi dahil genis kapsamli önemli devlet meseleleri üzerine detayli olarak hazirlanmis oldugunu söyledi. Sözcü, devlet baskaninin konusmasinin halka iletisim kurmada ilerlemeyi gösterdigini de ekledi.

President Lee Myung-bak's special news conference on Wednesday marking the fourth anniversary of his inauguration has drawn praise, criticism and left the main opposition party "speechless."

A spokesman for the ruling Saenuri Party said the president elaborated in detail on key state concerns across the board including his new perception on the relationship between the top office and the ruling party. The spokesman added that the president's speech represented an advance in communicating with the public.

The main opposition Democratic United Party said it was left speechless to hear the president say he was at a loss for words over the corruption scandals involving his aides and relatives. The main opposition party blasted the president's speech and said the public had expected a candid apology.

The conservative splinter Liberty Forward Party said Lee focused on excuses and did not deliver a renewed commitment to state governance or a hopeful blueprint of the future.

The liberal opposition Unified Progressive Party said the president wasted his last opportunity to address the scandals, and his explanation about his disputed post-retirement residence was absurd.

Seoul Belediye Baskani Park Won-soon ana muhalefet Demokratik Birlesmis Parti'ye katildi.

Persembe günü Ulusal Mecliste DBP tarafindan düzenlenen karsilama töreninde Seoul belediye baskani, siyasi birlik ve degisim dalgasini tesvik etmek için partiye hizmet edecegini söyledi.

Park, törene katilmadan önce DBP'nin Nisan genel seçimleri için yenilikçi aday adayliklari yoluyla yeni kisiler çikarmasi gerektigini söyledi. Muhalefet güçlerinin ortakligi için partiyi imtiyazlar vermesi konusunda tesvik etti.

Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon has joined the main opposition Democratic United Party.

In a welcome ceremony held by the DUP at the National Assembly on Thursday, the Seoul mayor said he will serve the party to promote political unity and waves of change.

Prior to attending the ceremony, Park said the DUP should tap new figures through revolutionary candidate nominations for the April general elections. He also urged the party to make concessions to promote a merger of opposition forces.
