Pres. Lee Stresses Importance of Korea-Turkey FTA

It seems that there could be some significant development in FTA talks between Korea and Turkey in the near future.
On the first day of his state visit to Turkey, President Lee Myung-bak emphasized the importance of a free trade deal between the two countries.

[Interview : President Lee Myung-bak] "I believe an FTA between Korea and Turkey will be a new chance for further development."

FTA negotiations with Turkey first began in 2010, after the Eurasian country first proposed talks in 2008.
Turkey already enjoys Korean products at cheap prices, as it has a customs union accord with the European Union made in 1996.
Ever since Korea's free trade pact with the EU came into effect last July, Korean goods were able to reach the Turkish market through the economic bloc at cheaper prices due to lower tariffs.
So, what Turkey wants now is to reduce the tariff barrier for Turkish exports to Korea by signing a trade deal and being able to sell Turkish products in Korea at lower prices as well.
Figures also show why Turkey wants this pact as soon as possible.
Trade volume between the two nations stood at around 6 billion US dollars last year, but Korea's outbound shipments to Turkey accounted for nearly 90 percent of this amount.
And for the Korean government, there will be nothing to lose, as it will be able to continue to sell its products at low tariffs either way.

President Lee's next stop is the Turkish capital of Ankara, where he will visit Turkish State Cemetery and Korean War Martyrs' Monument to pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in Korea back in the 1950s. The Korean leader is also scheduled to hold a bilateral summit with his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul at the presidential palace.

During President Lee's state visit to Turkey, a Korean consortium of SK E&C, Korea South-East Power Corporation, and Turkey's state-run eclectic company, EUAS will sign an MOU on Monday, local time, to build a thermal power plant in Tufanbeyli.

The project, which was first discussed last April, will be carried out in two stages, and the first stage, which this MOU will cover, is known to be worth 2 billion US dollars.

Turkey's economy is rapidly growing with its electricity demand skyrocketing in recent years, however, it is still highly dependent on energy imports.

This is why Turkey is trying to make the most out of its brown coal, which accounts for more than 24 percent of the nation's resources, using Korea's high-technology in this sector.
