Companies that fail to create jobs will not receive government subsidies, even if they make huge investments.

The Ministry of Knowledge Economy says that before the government’s subsidies are given to corporations to foster regional investment, the ministry will take into consideration not only the size of companies’ investments, but also their job creation efforts.

Accordingly, subsidies will be given in line with companies’ job creation goals, and those that fail to meet their target will not obtain the money.

The government says regions that have difficulties attracting companies, such as Busan, Daegu, Ulsan, South and North Gyeongsang Province, Gwangju and Jeju, will be given additional subsidies.

A new report says South Korea needs to prepare measures for the possible influx of millions of North Koreans following sudden reunification triggered by the collapse of the North’s communist regime.

A report by the Korea Employers Federation predicts that due to the income gap between the two Koreas, some one-point-six to three-point-six million North Koreans are expected to migrate to the South in the event unification is abruptly realized.

The report stressed the need for the South to devise measures to address confusion and drastic changes that would occur in the labor market due to the massive population shift.

The federation proposed that given that people who migrate from the North are likely to work in places that do not require special skills, South Korean businesses requiring additional manpower should fill spots with North Koreans and replace nonprofessional foreigners with North Koreans as well.

The number of female employees has topped ten million for the first time in the nation’s history.

The Finance Ministry and Statistics Korea report the number of female employees jumped 177-thousand year-on-year to more than ten million in 2011.

By age, the number of female workers in their 50s rose six-point-eight percent, or 130-thousand, from 2010 to over two million last year, while roughly one-point-nine million women in their 20s were employed.

Since the compilation of related statistics began in 1963, this marks the first time that employed women in their 50s outnumber those in their 20s.

The surge is attributable to a rise in the female population and more 50-something women getting jobs to help their families amid a struggling economy.
