Cold Snap Grips Nation, Mercury to Drop Further

A cold snap has gripped the nation, and the mercury is expected to drop further throughout Sunday.

Morning lows stood at minus nine-point-nine degrees Celsius in Munsan and Cheorwon on Sunday, while Seoul’s morning low stood at minus nine-point-three degree Celsius. Such freezing temperatures are expected to continue throughout the day on Sunday.

The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasts that on Monday, the lunar New Year, morning lows will dip even further. Cheorwon is expected to see its morning low stand at minus 19 degrees Celsius, Seoul minus 12, Gwangju minus five and Busan minus four degrees.

As a result, a cold wave watch that has been issued for the mountainous regions in Gangwon Province will be expanded to include the central region and inland areas of the southern part of the nation from Sunday evening.

Snow is forecasted for Jeju Island and the western coast of the Jeolla Provinces on Monday.

Seoul, Central Region Post Winter Low Temps

Sicaklik pazartesi sabahi çogu iç bölgede ve güney bölgelerin iç kesimlerinde -10 derecenin altina düstü.

Seoul -12.2 dereceyle bu kisin düsük sicaklik rekorunu kaydederken Gangwon Eyaletindeki Cheorwon'da sicaklik -18.3 derece olarak ölçüldü.

Gwangju ve Busan sehirleri de dahil güneyde -5 dereceyle dondurucu soguklar ayni durumda.

Pazartesi günü boyunca siddetli rüzgarlar devam edecek ve Seoul'de ögleden sonraki hava sicakligi -5 derece civarinda olacak.

Temperatures have plunged nationwide just in time for the Lunar New Year's holiday.

The mercury fell below minus ten degrees Celsius in most parts of the central region and southern inlands on Monday morning.

Cheorwon in Gangwon Province has reported temps of minus 18-point-three degrees, while Seoul has posted a record low this winter of minus 12-point-two degrees.

Conditions are well below freezing in the south as well at minus five degrees, including the cities of Gwangju and Busan.

Strong winds will persist throughout Monday, and afternoon highs in Seoul will remain around minus five degrees.

Afternoon highs will range from minus six to two degrees above zero across the country, which is two to eight degrees lower than Sunday.

Clear skies are forecast for most of the nation, but snow is expected in the Jeolla provinces and Jeju Island.

Snow will fall in other areas Tuesday starting from the west coast of South Chungcheong Province and also in metropolitan Seoul and South Chungcheong inland areas later at night.

Two to seven centimeters of snow is expected along the west coast of the Jeolla provinces, and one to three centimeters is forecast for the provinces' inland areas, Jeju Island and the central west coast. Less than one centimeter is expected for Seoul and the inlands of Gyeonggi and South Chungcheong provinces.
