120529 [VIXX Relay Interview①]Magnae Hyuk “A Singer that isn’t Justin Bieber isn’t good



VIXX, the rookie idol group that is the first to come from Jellyfish Entertainment. After having their first debut stage on the 24th, they briskly started promotional activities. The title song that has a polished pop feel ‘Super Hero’ stage properly fuses the individual characteritics of the 6 members N, Leo, Ken, Hongbin, Ravi, and Hyuk. The youngest member of VIXX, a team name that brags the best visuals and voice, who is also in charge of the title of ‘the most youthful’ magnae Hyuk. We are revealing his charm.

“Leader N hyung is 22 years old. I’m 17 years old. I’m 5 years younger. I’m only a teenager. The hyungs all say I’m cute. In reality, I’m not sure about that. I feel that I have ‘manly’ instincts deep down though? (laughs)”

The members who put off Hyuk’s words lightly and laugh. They respond “Thinking like this in itself is cute”. Even so, Hyuk’s words are not just to be laughed off. If you watch the ‘Super Hero’ performances or music video, the members who are in charge of the cute (?) expressions or lively(?) choreography points are N and Hongbin. Hyuk has eye contact with the camera with serious eyes and an expressionless face.

“Perhaps my usual image is that of a mischievous youth but the performance I show on stage is an awkward one. Maybe people who see this also think ‘This kid is like an adult’. From when I was really small, I had that confidence that ‘I know everything in the world’. I think it’s through that strength that I was able to debut as a VIXX member.”


Hyuk’s confidence could easily become pride. Because he could easily fall into thoughts of ‘What I know is absolutely correct.” Thankfully Hyuk hasn’t made that type of mistake. This is thanks to his parents at home and N at the dorm.

“When studying you should study, when resting you should rest, right? My parents taught me to always act upon the circumstance. I don’t go against their words and thanks to following that when I told them ‘I want to be a singer’ they also supported me. N hyung is the mom at the dorm. Every Saturday we have a family meeting and discuss what we’ve wanted to say over the week. I’m really thankful that that time began in consideration of me being the magnae.”

The truth is the more thankful I am, the bigger the burden and the more apologetic I am. In comparison to the other members, my trainee life was short and I also did not have the experience of properly learning dance so in the time before our debut I was also anxious. This is because of feeling that I had less ability to self-introductions such as “I’m OO who is in charge of being the ‘main vocal’” “I’m OO who is in charge of rap and choreography”.

“I think that in reality I wasn’t of much help on this album. I diligently learned, followed (instructions), and worked hard but in this short time I couldn’t grow as much as the hyungs. I’m at the standard where my voice adds on to the harmony and adds colorfulness to the adlib but shouldn’t I be able to change my thinking and change my capability in VIXX’s growth?”

The members nodded their heads in agreement to Hyuk’s words. To Leo’s words “I was worried because I had never danced before but instead I jumped in my improvement” and N’s words “Hyuk is in charge of having limitless potential in VIXX”, Hyuk smiled.

“In my second year of middle school, my sister coincidentally came to listen to singer Justin Beiber’s “Baby” and when I heard that I wanted to become a singer. Because Justin Beiber is a top searched artist on portal sites and is young like me. (Laughs) From then on I wanted to become a star like Justin Beiber. Please anticipate VIXX’s Justin Beiber.”

120528 “We are dance idols that sing well~”



“We are a dancing idol group that sings well.”

Rookie idol group VIXX replied with a strange answer to our question about the team’s unique characteristic. Because their thought that ‘Singers aren’t necessarily good at singing.”

VIXX had their first stage for their debut song ‘Super Hero’ on cable channel Mnet ‘M Countdown’ on the 24th. The fans’ screams grew bigger the more they ascended on the stages of KBS 2TV ‘Music Bank’ MBC ‘Show! Music Core’ and SBS ‘Inkigayo’.

The more intense their trendy ‘motorcycle dance’ becomes the more powerful is VIXX’s voices. As one second, one minute passes the more efforts they put into their expressions. The fans response was a cheer that no words describe VIXX better than ‘It isn’t that they sang well or just did well”. We met Ravi, Ken, Leo, Hongbin, N, Hyuk, these 6 invidiuals that mix together to form VIXX.

“I’m bewildered. As much as I had hardships while practicing, I gathered our wits by seeing the debut date (D-day) in which I could climb over the obstacle. The debut was what I looked forward to but it still feels like a dream. Because I feel that more than anything we shouldn’t become any one of our company sunbaes, I feel burdened.”(N)

VIXX is the first male idol group that has come from Jellyfish Entertainment. ‘Ballad king’ Sung Si Kyung and the owner of deep sensitive voice Park Hyo Shin are their sunbaes. This fact is the reason why they feel so much more burdened to sing well than performance or visuals.

“Although we were given the title “6 Sung Si Kyungs’, we’re still very far from it. It was also the same when I was being evaluated on ‘Mydol’ but Sung Si Kyung sunbae also visited the practice room sometimes and gave advice. I was comforted by his words ‘Just fix the things I commented on’ and felt that I had grown.”(Hongbin)

VIXX is a group that formed through passing a survival process. That process was broadcasted on Mnet ‘Mydol’. Of the 10 company trainees, 4 were eliminated and the final members of the VIXX now were decided upon.

“While we were doing ‘Mydol’ my heart was distressed. When the friends who I definitely wanted to do it (debut) with dropped out I cried alone. When the friends who I felt did really well were eliminated I had the anxiety of ‘After them am I next?’ Because I experienced that entire process I feel that I value the members who stand on stage with me more.”(Leo)

The atmosphere did not go down after Leo’s words. They all were lost in their own memories of hardships. Ken was the first to come back to his senses with a joke “Like the song title ‘Super Hero’ we show people that we are delicate and became the robot mascot like this.

“That’s right! Because we are ‘Super Hero’! (laughs) A cool hero that will do anything for the woman he loves. Eating lunch in Paris then shopping in Paris, facing the morning in the Alps then taking a stroll in the streets of London, a guy that makes that type of ‘fantastic world’. Although we don’t have girlfriends right now, we have the will to become a ‘Super Hero’ for our parents and our fans.” (Ken)

VIXX that has an average age of 20 years old, there is visible content between the reality and gaps in what they are called. To the “Are you not embarrassed?” question, Ken smilingly answered “Truth is the reality feels quite satisfying.” Ravi who said “I sympathize with Ken’s words” confidently stated “Because the melody and beat are sophisticated, it doesn’t sound childish.”

“Our music is different from other idol groups and the one confident point of us is our unique characteristics. It’s like we had the feeling of listening to pop. Because all the members recalled the songs of foreign singers like Neyo and Usher after we heard the song for the first time. If the recent songs are like the cool feeling of wearing nice suits, then our song is like the emphasized polished feeling of wearing casual formal wear.”(Ravi)

Magnae Hyuk who had only nodded his head to his members’ words opened his mouth in an instant to the hardest question. The question was “How would you like to present VIXX’s music to the public?” Hyuk who is 16 years old this year with a baby face and youthful voice to go with it answered.

“Just like the hyungs said VIXX’s own music style is unique. However it’s not that ‘Since we present the music this way every also has to listen to it that way’. Should I say we don’t want to force emotions? We want to work hard to the point until we can see where our intentions match the fans’ responses.”(Hyuk)

120530 [VIXX Relay Interview 2] Hongbin “Why is my hairstyle the only one that’s different?”

VIXX, the rookie idol group that is the first to come from Jellyfish Entertainment. After having their first debut stage on the 24th, they briskly started promotional activities. The title song that has a polished pop feel ‘Super Hero’ stage properly fuses the individual characteristics of the 6 members N, Leo, Ken, Hongbin, Ravi, and Hyuk. The member of VIXX, a team name that brags the best visuals and voice, that gained the title ‘best smile’, Hongbin. We are revealing his charm.

“More than anything else my charm is my voice. The bass tone of my voice is distinct compared to the other members. Although it’s nice to be a main vocal who is in charge of singing the chorus and climax of a song I like my position. I’m the person who starts the song.”

Hongbin, who shows his self-confidence is his own color, sang a measure of the song on the spot. He hummed the lyrics to the introduction to the 2nd verse in ‘Super Hero’, “Face the morning at the Alps, then go to London’. His sweet honey voice was pleasing to the ears. Hongbin’s smile was just as attention-grabbing.
“I heard that I look better when I smile while showing my dimples. I target nunas’ hearts with my smile. (laughs) I hear that it’s because I’m the only one with long hairstyle too. The other members all have a strong and cool hairstyle. When we went to the hair shop when we were still trainees I didn’t have a chance (to cut it) so although my hair was long, Manager hyung or the members would all respond ‘It’s fine’. They told me to just go with showing that type of feminine (hairstyle) so at first I was a bit embarrassed.
Maybe because of his hairstyle also, Hongbin feels small in comparison to the other members in his body size. Because of the fact that 180cm is a attractively height in which he has nice legs(?) that stand out as better than those of female idol singers. Hongbin who started saying, “I have hidden robust muscles” laughed saying, “The members’ ‘six pack bodies’ are naturally good so I tried relatively to get the same body.”

Hongbin was funny throughout the interview. His lips that only are only entertaining are the complete opposite of Leo who never ‘twitches’. If it was leader N’s words, we’d burst out in laughter hitting the table with our palms.

“I originally was not a guy who smiled much… when I was cold I was also cold. When the members offended me or when I had days of not doing well N hyung naturally read my emotions well. So I listen to hyung’s fun words well.”

Hongbin has not conveyed his thanks to N once or twice. If he wasn’t there, they wouldn’t be able to debut. Every time the fans’ screams get louder to either his gestures or his voice, he repeats ‘Thank you’ to N in his heart.

“From when I was little I lived freely without being stuck in a mold. I auditioned for the company in my 2nd year of high school and became a trainee but I had an unbearably hard time. Because of simplistic thoughts like ‘Why am I learning singing if I can’t even do it?’ ‘I just want to play’, I ran out of the company before. Even though I hid for 2~3 months, N hyung surprisingly found me. I was punished a lot and was scolded a lot but because of him, I’m who I am today. In the future, I will work hard until I become more steady and make our songs known through the whole country.”

Ravi “We played well with Will.I.Am. in Hongdae”

VIXX, the rookie idol group that is the first to come from Jellyfish Entertainment. After having their first debut stage on the 24th, they briskly started promotional activities. The title song that has a polished pop feel ‘Super Hero’ stage properly fuses the individual characteristics of the 6 members N, Leo, Ken, Hongbin, Ravi, and Hyuk. The member of VIXX, a team name that brags the best visuals and voice, who has the dream of becoming ‘the best rapper, Ravi. We are revealing his charm.

“From when I was young I listened to African American music. There wasn’t a special reason but because hip hop was the first music I listened to it became like that. The album cover had two African Americans standing. Although now I don’t remember who it was. (laughs) More than the melody, the rap caught my ears and from then on I followed hip hop.

From appearance, Ravi has the feel of a hidden pose. His eyes that are slightly unfocused and his mellow gaze captivates the other party. The him who has a symptom of narcolepsy, attempted to gain his senses and hold back the urge (to sleep) before it was his turn for his interview.

“I’ve never fallen asleep during practice but sometimes I also don’t know how long I’ve dozed off for. There are who have the sympton called narcolepsy but it’s not serious like the character Kim Jiwon of the MBC sitcom ‘High Kick! Short legs’ Counterattack’. (laughs)”

To Ravi’s words, the members bombarded him with questions, “How do you know ‘High Kick’?” “When did you watch TV?” This is because the period before debuting VIXX was completely absorbed in practice and didn’t have the luxury of watching TV. They don’t even have a TV. Ravi’s ‘Kim Jiwon comment’ caused a lot of division.

In reality, it’s a lie that I didn’t have even have a little stress when I was a trainee. Sleep, eat, practice, diet; only this type of lifestyle is impossible. Our company also doesn’t emphasize a Spartan teaching method. Recently singer Will.I.Am. visited Korea and all the VIXX members met him together. I naturally like hip hop music so when I heard that Will.I.Am came to a Gangnam club, together with the members and dorm mates we all went out to play and partied out. (laughs)”

Ravi who was lost in memories of that time. Because I have an attachment to hip hop I became worried about finding the musical value that fit with FIXX. We asked him “Isn’t it hard if the music you want to do and the music you present is different?”

He revealed his answer, “I’m singing K-POP but VIXX’s unique color is that they savor the feeling of something close to pop, so it’s very satisfying. Although established idol groups become more popular than the present through a new member joining, there’s also the impression that there won’t be many times that they’ll feel satisfied by themselves. I’m happy to become the support for VIXX’s songs through the rap that I can do well.”

‘Super Hero’ begins and ends with Ravi’s rap. In the entire 4 minutes, the time he is given is 40 seconds. Unlike the members whose faces are shown various times in their short measures, in calculation the time he is shown in the MV is relatively a lot.

“There’s a side to rep that makes it harder to reach fans than through the melody. If you listen to a song once even if you don’t know the lyrics you can hum along but rap is only a song without a melody. In addition, if you don’t catch the listener’s attention ‘What is that kid saying right now?’ ‘He’s only doing the actions’ there can be this type of impression. So I’m always practicing with the thought that ‘Show more precise, faster rap’. I want to see my grown image along with VIXX.”

120604 [VIXX Relay Interview④] Leo “Have you heard about ‘Yangjae-dong’s number one’?”

He idol group who has debuted for ‘3 weeks’ VIXX. Ever since Jellyfish Entertainment revealed their first male idol group they have been a hot topic. They are called the ‘6 Sung Si Kyungs’ due to their singing prowess that matches their company sunbaes’ reputation. From their boasted meaning of each performance not being like that of a rookie’s, they have also been given the nickname ‘reverse idols’.

On the stage of the debut title song ‘Super Hero’ that has the feeling pop’s polished sensitivity, the 6 members ; N, Leo, Ken, Hongbin, Ravi, and Hyuk’s individuality is well displayed. The team name that boasts of the best visuals and voice, VIXX’s member that is labeled ‘the best practice worm’, Leo. We are revealing his charm.

“It’s not even funny, how do I laugh?”


The interview that took a 2 hour long process. To us trying to become close, he showed a dark expression but the truth is, Leo was unique from others just from his first impression. From the leader N to the magnae Hyuk stated that “Leo is originally like that”, although he was relaxed (?) every time our eyes met his eyes, he hesitated. In broadcaster No Hongchul’s words, “It’s not that I smile while I’m happy but that while smiling I become happy” we asked him to show a slight smile but we failed.

“I’m also like Hongbin-ie who wants to smile well but can’t. It’s not that I intentionally show a scary expression but I think no matter what my first impression is never a soft one. Sometimes there are also fans who misunderstand so I think I have to fix it.”

Leo who from the beginning till the end was serious and had a heavy atmosphere in reality knew of his fierce side. ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’ is a saying that is made for Leo. Unyielding until he became a competitive person who hates to lose that has the greed to become the best, the Leo of today was made.

“I sang since I was 1 years old(?). I thought I was the best. The me who lived in Yangjaedong was named ‘Yangjaedong’s number one singer’. I even fell completely into vanity when I entered an arts high school, thinking that ‘As expected, I do well’. The more classes I took the more shocked I was. I didn’t know there were that many people who sang this well. I was the worst.”

Leo who understood his true position too late immediately left the school. To the question, “Didn’t you want to avoid what you discovered and other realities?” he replied “I couldn’t learn anything.”
“I couldn’t catch up. I envied the systematic system but I also thought that it would be hard to save my own style. I had the dream of being the ‘main vocal’ but I also had the impression that if I could learn at the same speed as the others I would turn until the end. In order to master things faster than the others I avoided school and chose a different method.”

Leo wandered around for a private college or a vocal trainer that could save his own charms while cultivating his dream. When he discovered his lacking points sleep also would not come. While discovering his improved self through the full body mirrors that surrounded dollar sign’s practice room, he felt satisfied.

“It’s like that even now. I’ve debuted but I won’t succeed in everything. I’m happy about the reality that I’ve become VIXX’s main vocal but I feel that the road ahead is long. Sometimes the members advise “Don’t tire yourself out” but I can’t survive without practicing. Even if I can reach the top by achieving 100 points out of 100, I won’t throw away the mentality I have now.

Ken, ‘Entertainer-dol’ dislikes his modifier… don’t call me ‘Korean cow-dol’!

The rookie idol group that has debuted for 3 weeks, VIXX’s Ken in this context passes the meaning as a member who always gives you anticipation. Whenever only his expressions are seen, whenever his forever seemingly mischievous voice is heard, this 4D youth’s charm is shown.

While digesting the title song ‘Super Hero’s melody their capabilities of a vocalist have been verified by company sunbaes like Sung Si Kyung, Park Hyo Shin, and Seo In Guk. Their image of dancing their trendy ‘motorcycle dance’ is also charismatic. From head to toe, compared to the ‘native Korean cow’ that has nothing that is expendable, a joke was made like that.

“Is it nice to receive attention? There are also people who hate it. (laughs) Everyone has the desire to be loved. If you have interest in me thank you.”


Leo whose expression slightly stiffened to Ken’s words. Although they lived together for a few months in the dorm, whenever he experiences Ken’s whining, he gave a look of having a hard time. Come to think of it, although the 6 members are seated in a single file line, Ken was disengaged towards the front. He seemed similar to MBC entertainment program ‘Infinite Challenge’s Jung Ju Ha’s character of being abused by other members, who always had one foot situated in front of his seat.

“There are two hyungs above me but they don’t play with me. So am I love-deprived? (laughs) I naturally love to play pranks. If people react to my words, I feel pleasure.”

If we were to decide on the one ‘responsible for entertainment’ within the team, it seems like Ken would fit this role. For those who entered the interview room without listening to ‘Super Hero’ beforehand, he sang a measure of the song on the spot. From his jokes up to his unexpected expressions, he has no way of keeping it to himself. To the words “It’s your destiny to be an entertainer” he laughed and said “Ey~ my destiny is to be a singer!”

“From when I was young I continued singing. Although I haven’t appeared on the recently popular audition programs, I’ve steadily come out at a song festival. I mostly sang ballads but I won a pretty high place. While gaining small experiences like that, my subconscious was buried with thoughts of ‘Let’s become a singer’.

There are also many people that see the Ken who sang rather early on stage and recognize him as a ‘man’. In the middle of this there are also people who fell into cultivating Ken’s dream of being a singer. The protagonist who spent more time with him than his family, VIXX member Hongbin.

“When I first entered the company, Hongbin asked me ‘Have me met somewhere before?’ Recalling my memories, I had been invited to a festival at Hongbin’s high school festival before. At that time, I was promoting in an amateur team through dancing and singing but Hongbin-ie said that image looked good.”


Ken who has the motto of unconditionally doing everything in an entertaining way and singing well ‘until they’re done’. This is thanks to his ‘unyielding motive’ of becoming a pro that appears on various music programs from being an amateur at a high school festival stage.

“To do well is to work hard. Although I repeatedly fail, it’s a process in which I have to succeed no mater. In order for our songs to be known by everyone and for our songs to climb to the #1 spot on all music charts, we still have a long road ahead of us. Even so, I’ve debuted through the ‘Super Hero’ and now that we’re promoting I’m happy. Up till now I was greedy alone to ‘sing until I become a singer’ but now that we’re a team I depend on them and when it gets hard, I also should grow right?”

I’m VIXX’s main-vocal, Leo.

Tell us about the clothes you are wearing right now?

A shirt with a dotted pattern and white cotton pants, perfectly fit for the coming winter.

Express yourself with one word.

Passion. Because I think my weapon is passion.

A place that fits you the best?

A cafe. The stage. I love coffee, so if I’m at a cafe I’m happy. And my reason for living is being on stage.

A book you’ve been impressed by?

“Veronica Decides to Die”, “Slow”, “Between Clam and Passion”

The most memorable present you’ve ever received?

Perfume

Your ideal type?

A person I like from the first meeting. Someone I’m attracted to the first time I see them. It’s about feelings, not looks.

One day, all of a sudden, an alien arrives on earth. If he was to give you a superpower, what would you ask for?

The power to fly.

The reason you are on earth?

To sing and warm people with my song.

To me, VIXX is…?

Shade. A place where I can rest, and my heart can be at ease… And a shade that can give me strength again, something like that!

Everyone knows of VIXX, and Leo from VIXX is recognized as a person that can give people warmth through my singing and acting.

VIXX for JUNIOR Magazine - Ravi Interview

If you were to introduce yourself with confidence?

I’m a rapper and a member of VIXX. Composing, writing lyrics, rap, dance makes me think a lot, and I love it. I want to become a real musician.

Tell us about the clothes you are wearing right now?

Nice, navy colored knit and jeans. It’s not something I’d normally wear. Since I’m a rapper, I like to wear more street clothes that are darker and more colorful.

Express yourself with one word.

Greed! I seem to be motivated by greed. For example the greed of always wanting to improve.

A place that fits you the best?

A club, and it’s also the place I want to go to the most right now.

A book you’ve been impressed by?

The novel “Koguryeo”, I read it recently and it stimulated my imagination and I liked it.

The most memorable present you’ve ever received?

A razor that I recieved from my sister. When I got it I was still a freshman in high school so it was a bit shocking. I didn’t really understand the meaning then…

Your ideal type?

A pretty and self-concious woman.

One day, all of a sudden, an alien arrives on earth. If he was to give you a superpower, what would you ask for?

Immortal life. I want to life forever. Live and have fun, I hate the thought of dying.

The reason you are on earth?

To be Ravi. This is the only answer I can come up with. I don’t think there’s a reason really, haha

To me, VIXX is…?

The seed. The tree called Ravi is growing, but the start was all thanks to VIXX.

Yourself in 10 years?

A great rapper, song-writer, performer, in a great place! I will keep aiming high and keep improving to show people how great I am. I think that’s what will happen.

If you were to introduce yourself with confidence?

VIXX’s painting, Hongbin! I’m a big fan of Park Hyo Shin, so I joined his company. I am a case of the most hardworking fan.

Tell us about the clothes you are wearing right now?

Oppa Autumn style! Mustard color is the point!

Express yourself with one word.

Painting! Take away things like charisma and sense for the art and just look at my face. I’ll stay still like a painting on the wall, it fits me.

A place that fits you the best?

A movie theatre. Becasue it’s a dark place where you can relax, concentrate and think.

A book you’ve been impressed by?

“Brain”. I started reading it after a close noona reccomended it to me. It reminded me when I was younger and liked science, so read it all.

The most memorable present you’ve ever received?

Valentine’s day chocolate. On the first Valentine’s day I recieved so much chocolate I couldn’t finish it on my own.

Your ideal type?

Tall, long and straight hair, a good personality, has good sense. I like a woman who gives it her all in her job.

One day, all of a sudden, an alien arrives on earth. If he was to give you a superpower, what would you ask for?

The power of enlightment? If there’s such a thing?

The reason you are on earth?

I’m alive to find that reason.

To me, VIXX is…?

The starting-point of my life.

Using the power I got from the aliens, I’ll be the most famous person alive.
