- I would take Hongbin hyung with me and play around at the same time. I often ask him ‘should we go see a late movie’, but in reality we’re not allowed to be out at night. If I had the chance, I would do it this way.

Q. On your first visit to Japan, who enjoyed it the most? (Ken)

N Ken really likes [One Piece], so he really wanted to go its hometown of Japan.

Ken I originally only liked Chopper, but after going to Japan I came to like all the characters. We’ve also went to Don Quixote, the place we often talked about before, and our office staff bought us several One Piece goods. Now that I think about it, it was really enjoyable!!!!

N Over there, Ken found and wore a hat of the Tokyo Tower so we all started following along with triangle kimbap or carb bread hats. Since we were excited we even took a picture for memories.

Ravi We thought how it was a store that sells a variety of items, so we were able to enjoy it to the fullest.

Hongbin I fell crazily in love with Japanese food. The curry was especially delicious. I heard that Indian curry was the best, but isn’t Japanese curry better?

N Ramen was also delicious.

Hongbin Ah! It was really good.

Ravi We enjoyed a lot of new things.

Hyuk I was surprised that the streets were so clean. And the hotel we stayed at had a underwater tunnel? Seeing the cars pass by through the water was really interesting.

Ravi It was everyone’s first time in Japan so we had a lot of expectations. It was also the first time we performed in Japan, so it became a memorable performance.

Leo The sound quality of the venue we performed at was great, I was thankful for the staff who put a lot of care into it.

N I really liked the Japanese fan culture. They had fun with us while we were on stage and also followed the rules that needed to be followed. So when our performance ended, we were feeling very happy. Although we still don’t have any fixed plans for Japanese activies, if you call for us we will happily come. I want to have fun with everyone again.

Q. Who can’t wake up early in the morning? (Ken)

Ravi Everyone wakes up comparatively well right?

N I woke up the earliest today.

Hongbin No~ it was me.

N Ah~ it was like that. I fell asleep again. Hongbin is the type to set up an alarm and wake up. It’s hard for Ken and Leo to wake up. In Leo’s case he wakes up, changes his clothes and goes back to sleep. What about Ken?

Hongbin Recently Ken hyung really can’t wake up. Even when he wakes up he says [Who’s in the bathroom~ Wake me up when it’s empty~] and then falls asleep again. That’s why Ken hyung is always late.

Ken Even so there’s a member who doesn’t wash his face or change his clothes and falls back asleep. I agree that I can’t wake myself up. Our manager wakes me up.

N That’s why the one that has a hard time waking up is Ken.

Ken …. I said that I’m not the only one~ (cries)

Q. Who’s the best at cooking? (Leo, Ravi, Hongbin)

N Although Hongbin doesn’t make food often it’s good. Since Ravi likes to cook, he’s good at making kimchi fried rice.

Ravi Rather than saying I’m good at it, it’s more like I make it a lot?

N Ravi’s cooking changes accordingly to his condition. There are times where the kimchi fried rice isn’t good because he burned it, and there are also times when it’s really delicious. Leo is really good at making ramen, no one can beat him.

Q. Who takes the longest showers? (N)

Ravi It’s N hyung right?

Leo Recently he’s a little faster.

Ravi I’m the one that takes short showers. (laughs) It’s not that I’m not washing well.

N That’s right that’s right, Ravi is fast.

Hongbin After I shower I tell him [Ravi go shower~] as I’m putting my clothes on. When I look back, he’s standing in the same position. So I ask him [You’re not going to shower?] he tells me that he already showered and came out. High-speed shower.

Ravi I shower fast so everyone can finish faster!

6-member group VIXX, the words they want to say to fanclub “Starlight”

6 member idol group VIXX (N, Leo, Ken, Hongbin, Ravi, Hyuk) came back with their third single album ‘VIXX 3rd’. For this new album their title song is ‘Ready to Get Hurt’ and they also pre-released “Don’t Want to be an Idol’.

Last year they debuted in May and already released two single albums. <Oh My Star> sat down with these early 20-somethings, who had fresh charms and seriousness and worries that were unlike idols.

With their outstanding visuals and heart, equipped with the best vocal and dance abilities, their fandom is quickly growing. VIXX’s fanclub name ‘Starlight’ has 8,000 members registered.

For an idol group to exist, the greatest strength are their supporting fans. Especially groups who have just debuted and have not experienced widespread popularity just yet, fans become a thankful presence. Through an interview, this is what VIXX wanted to say to their fans.

“When we became ambassadors for the Salvatian Army, our fans helped fundraise together and even those who were having difficult times helped out. In the future, it’d be nice if we could play together and do good things together.

I hope our fans can play hard, but also work hard. Don’t spend too much time wandering, but do things properly. Within our fans, there are those who place 1st in their whole schools. It makes me proud and happy. They are fans that can study like crazy and also play like crazy.”

Leo

“My father was a career solider. I grew up with a really strict lifestyle. But thanks to my father, I was able to grow up properly and it helps a lot in my activities as a singer. He used to tell me ‘You have to know a lot in order to feel a lot’. In order to do what you love, you have to study hard in that field. Then you can feel so much more.”

Hongbin

“My role model is Park Hyoshin sunbae-nim, so it seems like I’m just following him. I also found out about Jellyfish Entertainment because of Park Hyoshin sunbae-nim. As I watched his videos or go to his concerts I also dreamed of becoming a singer. When I was younger I endlessly praised Park Hyoshin sunbae-nim and my dreams grew, and as time gradually passed not only did I respect his expressiveness and voice, but also his humane side.

I think it’s best to enjoy your teenage years. You can only draw the outline of a blueprint after you’ve lived them without regrets.”

Ravi

“I admire G-Dragon sunbae-nim. Every time he appears he’s always one step ahead, and always shows his best. I think that self development is impossible without constant falls. I’m also a rapper in the team, and because I also write songs, I put in a lot of effort to read books in order to understand how to stay one step ahead of other people.

Although it’s good to enjoy your teenage years, it would be best to develop your interest in that. Not just playing around without thought, but working hard on your interests.”

“I respect Lee Seunggi sunbae-nim the most. Lee Seunggi sunbae-nim studied well during his school days, and he’s famous for being a model student and the ideal son-in-law. My dream was to be a celebrity, but it’s my aspiration to become like Lee Seunggi sunbae-nim. Although there were a lot of times where I wanted to play, but I wanted to become like Lee Seunggi sunbae-nim so pushed myself a lot.”

Cuvism Magazine - “A new idol group has been born, VIXX”

“Growing in a different environment as other idol groups helps us form an identity that only belongs to us.”

Being label mates with Sung Sikyung, Seo Inguk, Park Hyoshin, the first idol group of Jellyfish Entertainment made by the best producer Hwang Sejun, VIXX. As an artist-oriented company, the entrance of an idol group sparked interest since the beginning of their debut, who were also known to be a group of artists that were selected to be the best musicians at home and abroad. Recently VIXX made an exceptional transformation through “Ready to Get Hurt”, with a uniqueness that only belongs to them, and left a strong impression. They said when they first debuted, there was a burden they carried on their backs, but now they want to follow in their sunbae’s footsteps and appear as artists in the public’s memory. In reality, they possess remarkable talents in areas of art and culture. This is VIXX’s story. (On this day Ken’s condition was not well so he was unable to participate in the interview.)

The Vixx Members Want to Be Musicians, Not Puppets

Last year over 20 new idol teams tried their hand at becoming the next big name in K-Pop. The flow of young and fresh names was good, but the flood of new faces made it hard to tell one team from the other, as they were all young, good-looking and endured long training periods. It was hard to find the one gem that shone amidst idols who merely did what their agency told them to do.

Vixx, however, begs to differ. The group of course debuted with the support of its seniors like most other groups, as it′s rooted in Jellyfish Entertainment, the big ballad agency that holds Sung Si Kyung, Park Hyo Shin and Lee Seok Hoon, but it turned out there was more to this group than the big names behind it.

The six members, Leo, Ken, Ravi, Hong Bin, Hyuk and leader N, knew which way they wanted to go. Instead of aimlessly smiling with their pretty faces or trying to get their choreography to match perfectly, they concentrated on figuring out exactly which direction they needed to turn.

The members emphasized, “We would love to be popular stars, but we want to be musicians,” in order to stay alive in the competitive market. It wasn′t part of their ′programming′; they really meant it.

It′s your first anniversary this year. This fact seems to have pumped you with new energy.

Ravi: “It hasn′t been a year yet since we made our debut, but this year we want to be even better than last year. In order to do so, we need to sing music that we can be satisfied with and that touches the hearts of the public. We poured a variety of stories and thoughts in our album with the hope that our music will be loved even more.”

Your preview track ′I Don′t Want to Be an Idol′ made big issues. Is it about how the members truly feel?

Ken: “(Laugh) Of course we want to be onstage. Our agency asked us for ideas when it was decided we would release I Don′t Want to Be an Idol beforehand. The members got together to think about it, and those ideas made it into the lyrics. I guess you could say some of how we feel made it in, but it′s not that we don′t want to be idols (Laugh).”

N: “Of course, the lyrics to I Don′t Want to Be an Idol came from our ideas. We talked about it over meals, and we wrote how we felt toward our fans. One time, for a music show, only one of our fans made it into the audience, and we were so sad then. If we had been more famous, more fans would have been able to see us perform… We wrote down how sad we felt back then.”

That′s such an idol answer, that you wrote it for your fans.

Anonymous: “We′re telling the truth. I hope you keep this secret for me (Laugh). I used to date someone when I was a trainee, but we broke up as I made my debut. I thought I should contain my personal emotions for a while if I wanted to fulfill my dream.”

Ravi: “The relationships of idols; it′s a fun subject. It is, of course, something we need to be careful around too (Laugh). We got a lot of attention because we sang about a fun subject, and N hyung (big brother) is also appearing in The Romantic & Idol. We wanted to show how thankful we were toward our fans. As we said before, if we had been more famous or higher in status, we wouldn′t have had only one fan cheering for us in the audience. We wrote about how sad we felt about the little things in life.”

The teaser for ′On and On′ also made issues for your vampire makeup and color lenses.

N: “I promise our performances will be shocking too. We′ll transform into noble vampires onstage as if we were acting in a musical. Our choreography, expressions and the acting we′ll put on will give off a new vibe.”

Ravi: “If our previous performances were mostly soft and cute, this time we aim to show off our charms as big men. Many fans seemed to dislike how we appeared in color lenses, but we′ll make sure we bring something fresh to the scene with our noble vampire concept.”

You say you′ve become men; which member do you believe has become the most attractive man?

Hong Bin: “We all worked out, eating only chicken breasts for three months in order to become men, but Ken hyung has become the most handsome. He′s lost weight, so his face has become slimmer and though his thighs were really thick before… (Laugh) He′s become slimmer. I could see his pants fit him better now (Laugh).”

N: “Ken really has become sharper. He used to introduce himself as the ′cute main vocalist′, but now he says he′s a ′big man′ (Laugh).”

These days N has been appearing in tvN′s ′The Romantic & Idol′. Do you monitor his appearances for him?

Ken: “We don′t have a TV at home, so we gather in our practice room to watch him. I′m jealous of N (Laugh). I could be romantic if I was on the show too.”

N: “I was sad I looked so clumsy in the January 13 broadcast. I had to hug Spica′s [Yang] Ji Won, but I looked so nervous. Maybe it′s because I′m not old enough to be skilled around women yet (Laugh).”

I heard you don′t have cell phones either.

Ravi: “That′s right. We′re being analog in this digital world (Laugh). We have a team phone, and N hyung takes care of it. Since we don′t have cell phones, we don′t have room to care for other things, including love. What we need to do is practice and keep aiming for what′s ahead of us. Does this sound too much like an idol? (Laugh)”

Leo: “Ever since we made our debut, during the eight months of our career we′ve only been to our practice room and home, except for where we went during the one vacation we got for Chuseok. I believe we′ll have to work harder to reach our goal.”

There are many idol groups out there, and more groups will be coming up this year; what makes you different from the others?

N: “We have many artists in our agency. They care for us, teaching us not only how to sing or how to perform, but also such skills like how to write lyrics. I like to dance, and sometimes they ask me to come up with choreography. I can promise we have much more to show because we′re not an idol that was made by the agency; they listen to what we have to say.”

Ravi: “I liked hip-hop music so I wanted to be an artist or musician. I′ve debuted as an idol, but I′m also honing my skills toward becoming an artist. I′ve been working on my own songs, and writing my own lyrics. Our agency helps me become an artist. They come to me first for the rap lyrics for our album, and I′ve been able to dream more of becoming a musician.”

Ken: “Now, we′re only active as a group, but later on when we become more able and skilled I believe there′s a chance we′ll promote as solo singers or unit groups. Our agency gives us such opportunities, so I want to work hard and succeed as a vocalist.”

Hyuk: “I dreamt of becoming the biggest icon of our time. I′m active as Vixx and we′ll continue to be active, but I′m trying to find what′s inside me so that I can become a singer with my own color.”

‘Vampire-dol’ VIXX, currently preparing for transformation



With their 1 year anniversary drawing near, they have released four single albums, and have shown their charms through variety shows and radio. They have also earned the unique nickname of ‘Vampire-dol’. Their awareness in overseas markets has increased. 2013 is the most important time. We met VIXX who are preparing for their new album and drama.

From Leader N’s widely spread 100% positivity, Leo who speaks the least out of all Korean idols, satisfied Ken after losing 10kg of baby fat, Ravi who’s speech is awkward when acting, once a basketball player ulzzangHongbin who dreams, to curiosity-ridden Hyuk with motivation for anything… Loud and bustling VIXX time starts now~

Six men, transformation through color lenses and manicures

N: It completed the performances for ‘Ready to Get Hurt’. I’m happy we received good responses. But we also have bigger responsibilities with the next album. It’s because we have to show an even better side of us.
Ken: That’s right, we were able to easily emit the protective instinct of a vampire. Fortunately the visuals turned out well.
Leo: It was honestly tough to wear the lens and have the manicures done correctly.
Ravi: Since I dyed my hair to orange it was very intense. At first it scared people, but I slowly started to like it so I was satisfied.
Hongbin: I think that rather than us being a unique group, it’s more that the ‘vampire’ concept was so strong. In the future it seems we’ll have to show a variety of different visuals.
Ken: Since a new semester started at school, more people started to recognize me so it was good. Of course more of them recognized me when I was wearing makeup.
Hongbin: Then Ken hyung can go to school with vampire hair and makeup. How about wearing the color lens too? (laughs)
N: Our fans gave us the title ‘vampire-dol’, so I think it’d be nice if the next album we could receive a nickname that is recognized by the entire public.
Ravi: Next time it’ll be through better music or popularity.
N: In the group, there are members in charge of singing, humor, rap, etc. so it seems like we’ll all receive equal attention. We would be grateful.
Hongbin: I hope people will like us for our charisma on stage, and our friendliness off stage. Of course the difference is huge (laughs), but I think that’s our merit.
Hyuk: It’s also good that people see our real selves in variety programs. Especially the the members that are like meddling ahjumma’s. Haha.
Ken: I’m going to become the cutie of the variety world no matter what, like ZE:A’s Hwang Kwanghee sunbae-nim.
Ravi: Our utlimate goal is to be first place. It’s good if we do well and naturally get it, but doing well is the criteria for getting first place anyway.
Leo: I agree.

Discispline idol life, getting angry at each other

N: Actually when we debuted, we were scared to talk to other idol groups. But in order to get our place we had to be really active. We became a lot more talkative with variety programs and radio shows.
Ken: So N hyung, out of all the idol group members, became a fixed cast on radio and records the top programs. I’ll have to follow behind him.
Hongbin: No matter what N hyung and Leo hyung who doesn’t talk (laughs) actually talk the most among us.
Ravi: When we first met, everyone had lived different lives so I was worried, but after going through training together, there can’t be any better members.
Hyuk: I liked the hyungs from the start. What about Leo hyung? (laughs)
Leo: Me too
Ravi: Sometimes when I look at past photos I think Ken looks like he was reincarnated. Because he looks so different now. Hahaha.
Ken: I acknowledge that too. If you look at my past photos they’re really funny. But isn’t it cute still? Even though I was ugly, the basis of a cutie is still there hahaha.
N: There isn’t another idol who likes our house as much as we do. Even though we don’t have a TV, just by looking at the house.
Ken: It’s probably because our dorm is comfortable. The view from the 21st floor is good, and the location is convenient.
Ravi: Our dorm is “ViPride”. VIXX’s Pride hahaha.
Hongbin: The dorm was specially prepared for us by our CEO. (laughs) If we’re there for 24 hours, it feels really like something is sticking to you.
Hyuk: When I’m with the hyungs, it really feels like we’re real brothers. It’s not something that’s set up, but they’re fun hyungs the more you look at them. It feels like Mother N and Father Leo hahaha.
Ken: Seeing celebrities I used to only see on the screens in real life is really amazing. I see a lot of singers now, and in the future I want to see a lot of actors. (laughs)

1st Anniversary, VIXX walking together towards the future

N: In the future I won’t lose my confidence, and I’ll work harder. My training period was long, but I believed I would make it. After meeting you guys, I was even more sure. I want to make my parents happy as well.
Ken: My parents are happy too. They’re proud of their youngest son. They’ll tell everyone around them that VIXX and I are the best. The past karaoke star has now become an umchinah [mom’s friend’s son]. Hahaha.
Leo: I’ll also work harder at singing for my family and the people around them.
Hongbin: I have a lot of things I want to do, so I won’t look elsewhere and work hard. I have to repay the people around me who helped me so much.
Ravi: I still have a lot of things I want to show on stage. I want to continue making raps, and I have an ideal performance and stage that I want to show. Please anticipate it.
Hyuk: I’m going to follow my hyungs and do well. I’m going to show a performance only VIXX can do that will please our fans and of course the public. I haven’t even shown 10% of that. Hahaha.
Hongbin: Having activities while going to school is good. I can personally feel the reactions towards VIXX, and I can express what I learn at school on stage. Musical classes are really fun. I also want to appear in musicals later on.
Leo: I have a different reason why I want to be a musical actor. Rather than acting, I think it’ll be a big help to how I express emotions when I sing. Learning vocalization and pronunciation is a great external help to me.
Ken: I’ve also started to study how to write lyrics. I hope everyone can anticipate it.
Hyuk: Like the hyungs, when I go to college I won’t take any leaves of absences and I’ll study hard. But I have greed to go into a theater and film major, applied music, or musicals like the hyungs. Where should I go? Hehe.

VOGUE GIRL: Recently you’ve garnered attention as vampire idols, but how do you feel about erasing your make-up?

N: It’s okay. In my opinion VIXX is a team that has a variety of images. When we debuted (‘Super Hero’) we had a polished style, and our second single (‘Rock Ur Body’) showed our cute sides. Although this time we received a lot of love with our intense style in ‘Ready to Get Hurt’, we’re not uncomfortable with showing our natural sides. (VG: A face that wears make-up every day will start to think it’s their real face.) That’s right! I always wear eyeliner so when I don’t it looks like my eyes become smaller.

VG: A sexy beauty, a terrible beauty, how do you feel when you hear these words?

N: I like hearing that I’m sexy. Not a sexy that you can turn off, but an innate sexiness. (VG: Are you a sexy man in reality?) Far from that. (VG: Onstage you exude the ‘sexy beauty’ but what about offstage…?)
Hongbin: A reversal ‘cheap beauty’ (laughs).

VG: When you hear that you look like Seo Inguk, are you convinced as so?

N: I like hearing it. (VG: You are better than Seo Inguk in which aspects?) Freshness, childlike appearance, slim? (VG: Something that you can’t keep up with?) Skill? (VG: When he’s talking to women?) Sunbae-nim, I won’t answer that.

VG: While having activities, you received the nickname ‘Cha Yeoji’ (Because when he sings the lyrics ‘You leave ambiguity behind’ the choreography involves pulling his head back). How do you feel about ambiguous women?

N: Ambiguous women are masters of ‘pushing and pulling’, and I don’t think that matches with me well. I like innocent and pure girls. (VG: Have you ever hurt an ambiguous woman?) I’ve never hurt someone, but I’ve been dumped. (VG: Do you think you’re an ambiguous man yourself?) It’s no joke on stage (laughs).

VG: Who do you think would regret seeing the you right now? The woman who dumped you, or the Big 3 idol companies that dropped you from auditions?

N: The Big 3 companies (laughs)? Don’t you think if they remember me, they would regret it a little?

VG: It seems like you’ll have trouble finding your next concept. Will you be werewolves, or will you be zombies?

N: We discussed our next concept among ourselves a lot, but I would like to be policemen. The uniform is handsome.

VG: If you become a unit group with Hongbin in the future?

N: I think something like today’s photoshoot concept as young men is good. The music would be a song like Urban Zapaka, and the dance would be a 20-21 year old style rather than something intense. (VG: Who would be in charge of what?) Hongbin will be in charge of soft charisma, and I would be in charge of sexy charisma. (VG: Are you going for ‘sexy’ no matter what?) Of course (laughs).

Hongbin

VG: I heard that when you were trainees there were a lot of people who misunderstood your relationship with N as brothers? Out of the two, who do you think is more lethal towards women?

Hongbin: Of course it’s N hyung. His face is overflowing with kki*. (VG: How so?) Kki of ‘ambiguity’. Lately women seem to like men who have kki. (VG: Do you think you lack kki yourself?) I think my kki is obscured by my face. N: Handsome kki. Hongbin: It sounds like you’re swearing**, hyung.

VG: During recent promotions, do you ever think that the make-up is so intense that you question if it’s your own face?

Hongbin: When I wear strong make-up, I like seeming like a whole different person. Being a ‘playful man’ is good, but I also like hearing the words ‘macho man’.

VG: If there was something that you regret about your appearance? Usually pretty men and women say it’s their ears, or somewhere like their toes.

Hongbin: I’m thankful for a lot of things, but I wish my jawline was sharper. I like N hyung’s sharp jawline. It’s sexy. I also feel a little disappointed in my ‘sunken’ eyes.

VG: If you were in a unit group with N what kind of concept would you like?

Hongbin: I want to do jazz music. I don’t know if my voice would fit with it well, but I like gloomy and dark music. The dance would also be jazz dance, and our clothes would be a clean style.

VG: If you didn’t have pneumothorax*** surgery in high school, do you think you would have been called ‘the artwork of the basketball court’?

Hongbin: I’m not sure. I also loved music too much.

VG: Was your hairstyle during debut a style that you’d like to have again? Is it a style you want to avoid?

Hongbin: At that time I wanted to go a different direction. Letting down my fringe and covering one eye, an innocent feeling.
