KT to Showcase 5G Technology in Autonomous Car During Paralympic Games

KT, Otonom Araçta 5G Teknolojisini Paralimpik Oyunlar Süresince Sergileyecek

Güney Kore'nin en büyük ikinci mobil operatörü olan KT Corp, Perşembe günü beşinci nesil (5G) kablosuz teknolojiyi, yaklaşan PyeongChang Kış Paralimpik Oyunları'nda kendi kendine sürüş yapan bir otomobilde sergileyeceğini söyledi.

Mobil taşıyıcı, Paralimpik Oyunları'nın en son hizmetlerinin gösterilmesi için yarış yerlerinin yakınında 3.5 kilometrelik bir ray üzerinde bir pilot 5G kablosuz ağı kurdu.

PyeongChang Kış Olimpiyat Oyunlarının sponsoru olan KT, dünyanın ilk ticari 5G servisine başlamayı hedefliyor. Yeni ağ teknolojisi, mevcut dördüncü nesil teknolojiden 40-50 kat daha hızlı veri iletimi sağlar.

KT Corp., South Korea's second-largest mobile carrier, said Thursday it will demonstrate its fifth-generation (5G) wireless technology in a self-driving car during the upcoming PyeongChang Winter Paralympic Games.

KT said it will showcase vehicle-to-infrastructure communication for real-time video streaming and video calls by implementing 5G wireless technology in a rear-seat entertainment system in Hyundai Motor's fuel cell electric vehicle NEXO.

The mobile carrier has established a pilot 5G wireless network on a 3.5 kilometer-track near the venues for the Paralympic Games for the demonstration of its latest service.

KT, a sponsor of the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games, aims to begin the world's first commercial 5G service. The new network technology allows data transmission at speeds 40-50 times faster than the current fourth-generation technology.

The Paralympics is set to begin on Friday and end on March 18.

S. Korea to Develop Smart Life Jackets

Güney Kore Akıllı Can Yelekleri Geliştiriyor

Can yeleklerine, kurtarıcılara konum verisi gönderen Telekom modülleri yerleştirilecek.

Proje, Güney Kore'nin polis, itfaiyeciler, acil durum personeli ve sosyal hizmet uzmanları için akıllı cihazlar geliştirme çabalarının bir parçasıdır.

Bilim ve Bilgi ve İletişim Bakanlığı, BİT Bakanı Yoo Young-min ile ülkenin başlıca mobil operatörlerinin (SK Telecom Co., KT Corp. ve LG Uplus Inc.) başkanları ile başlangıç yetkilileri arasındaki toplantıda duyuruyu yaptı.

South Korea's science ministry said Monday that it will embark on a project to develop smart life jackets that can send the location data of the wearer in case he or she is in distress at sea.

The life jackets will be embedded with telecom modules that send location data to rescuers.

The project is part of South Korea's efforts to develop smart devices for police, firefighters and emergency personnel, as well as social workers.

The Ministry of Science and ICT made the announcement during a meeting between ICT Minister Yoo Young-min and the heads of the country's main mobile carriers -- SK Telecom Co., KT Corp. and LG Uplus Inc.-- as well as startup officials.

Samsung registers two drone patents in U.S

Samsung Electronics, drone endüstrisine giriyor olabilir; çünkü ABD Patent ve Marka Ofisi'ne bu ay ilgili iki patent kaydettirdiği ortaya çıktı.

ABD patent ofisinin internet sayfası ve endüstri kaynaklarına göre; Samsung Electronics, 13 ve 27 Mart'ta drone tasarımlarıyla ilgili iki patent kazandı. Gönderilen tasarımlardan birinde; uzun bir gövdenin üstünde dört kanat ve altında kayağa benzer bir yapı görülüyor.

Siteye spesifik detaylar konulmamıştı.

Endüstri analistlerine göre, patentlerin onayı Samsung'un yakın zamanda drone üreteceği anlamına gelmiyor; ancak IT devinin çeşitli ürünlere yönelik araştırma ve geliştirme deneylerini gösteriyor.

Endüstri içinden biri şöyle diyor, "Görünüşe göre Samsung Electronics böyle patent edinimleri yapmasınon sebebi, bu şekildeki bir yüksek teknoloji endüstrinin her zaman global oyuncular arasında çetin bir yarışa sebep olabileceğini düşünmesi."

Samsung Electronics might be getting into the drone industry as it was found to have registered two patents related to the devices with the United States Patent and Trademark Office this month.

According to the U.S. patent office website and industry sources, Samsung Electronics won two patents related to drone designs on March 13 and 27. One of the submitted designs shows four wings on top of a long body and what seems to be a ski on the bottom.

No specific details were posted on the website.

The approval of patents does not mean that Samsung will be manufacturing drones soon, industry analyst say, but it does signal the IT giant’s research and development experiments in diverse products.

“It seems Samsung Electronics is going for such patent acquisitions thinking that such a high-tech industry can always spark a fierce competition among global players,” an industry insider said.

“It is known that Samsung Next, an investment arm for potential start-ups, is also paying great attentions to drone-related firms recently,” the insider added.

Samsung Electronics had shown interest in drones since 2016, when it applied for multiple patents related to drones both in Korea and the United States.

Global IT giants like Apple, Google and Amazon have staked out claims in the burgeoning industry, merging artificial intelligence and autonomous car technology with drones to develop so-called smart drones, which can be used for deliveries, security and aerial photography.

Chinese Space Station May Fall to Earth on Monday

Çin Uzay Mekiği Pazartesi günü Dünyaya Düşebilir

Güney Kore Uzay Yetkilerinin Pazar günü, Çin'in terk edilmiş uzay istasyonun bu haftanın başlarında Dünya'ya beklenenden iki saat önce düşebileceğini duyurdu.

Tiangong-1 isimli aracın dünyaya Kore saatiyle sabah 9:12 ve öğlen 1:12 arasında düşmesi bekleniyordu. Devlet tarafından işlenen Kore Astronomi ve Uzay Bilimleri Enstitüsünun yaptığı güncel açıklamaya göre saat pazartesi günü sabah 7:26 ve öğlen 3:26 saatleri arasında düşecek.

10.5 metre ve 8.5 ton ağırlığında olan yetkisi alınmış uzay mekiği, 155 km yükseklikte, saat öğlen 4 itibariyle gezegenin yörüngesinde oturuyordu. Önceki günden itibaren yörüngesi 18.8 km düştü.

China's defunct space station is likely to plunge to Earth early this week, two hours ahead of the originally expected time, South Korean space authorities said Sunday.

The Tiangong-1 will fall to Earth between 9:12 a.m. and 1:12 p.m. Monday (Korean time), the state-run Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute said, updating its early Sunday calculation of between 7:26 a.m. and 3:26 p.m. Monday.

The 10.5-meter, 8.5-ton decommissioned spacecraft was orbiting the planet at an altitude of 155 kilometers as of 4 p.m. Its orbit dropped 18.8 kilometers from the previous day.

South Korea is among the possible places where its debris could land, along with other Asian and African countries and the Pacific and South Atlantic oceans.

The institute said it will announce whether South Korea is among the possible crash sites two hours ahead of the plunge.

The estimates are still highly variable.

The European Space Agency (ESA) also made similar projections, saying the Tiangong-1 will re-enter the Earth's atmosphere on Monday.

The Ministry of Science and ICT issued an alert Friday, though its return is unlikely to cause any damage. Most of the vehicle is expected to burn up in the atmosphere, but fragments could hit the Earth's surface, the ministry said.

Chinese authorities have said its re-entry will offer a "splendid" show akin to a meteor shower.

The Tiangong-1, launched in 2011, is China's first space station and served as an experimental platform for the country's ambitious space program.

U.S. tech giant Apple Inc. said Monday it will start sales of its red edition of the iPhone 8 smartphone in South Korea this week, with the proceeds partially being used to fight AIDS.

The country's three mobile carriers -- SK Telecom Co., KT Corp. and LG Uplus Corp. -- will release the red phone Tuesday. The price tag on the new edition will be the same as the original version.

The price tag on the 64-gigabyte edition of the iPhone 8 stands at 946,000 won (US$880), with that of the 5.5-inch iPhone 8 Plus with the same capacity reaching 1.07 million won.

The red edition of the iPhone 8 was first released in the United States, China and Britain last week.

The new iPhone is anticipated to compete with LG Electronics Inc.'s G7 ThinQ, which will be showcased in May.

Kakao Founder Establishes Charity to Foster Start-ups

The founder of South Korea's top mobile messenger operator Kakao Corp. established a foundation that will engage in various activities to contribute to the well-being of society, the company said Monday.

Kakao said a total of 4 billion won (US$3.73 million) was invested in the charity named "Kakao Impact." The investment was jointly made with Kakao and Kakao M, an entertainment affiliate.

Kim Beom-su, the founder of Kakao, will head the new charity.

The company said it is seeking to invite more affiliates to join the movement. The IT company said it is currently contemplating details of how the charity should be operated.

As Kakao emerged from a start-up to become a major IT giant, industry watchers expect the charity will focus on finding ways to utilize various ideas to contribute to society.
