College professor questioned in suspected corruption case linked to Seoul's education chief

Seoul Ulusal Üniversitesi Egitim Bölümü Profesörü Park Myoung-gee, o zamanki rakibi ve suanki Egitim Müdürü Kwak No-hyun’dan 130 milyon won (120,147 Amerikan dolari) aldigi iddialariyla cuma günü göz altina alindi.

A college professor was questioned for the second day Saturday on suspicion that he had dropped out of last year's election for Seoul's education chief in exchange for money, prosecutors said.

Park Myoung-gee, a professor at Seoul National University of Education, was taken into custody Friday over allegations that he had received 130 million won (US$120,147) from then rival and now education chief Kwak No-hyun.

“Hallyu Should Be Creative to Maintain Popularity”

‘Hallyu Popülerligini Korumak Için Yaratici Olmali’

Paris Üniversitesi’nde Korece’yi arastiran bir profesör, yaraticiligin Kore pop kültürünün korunmasinda en önemli faktörlerden biri oldugunu söyledi.

Pazartesi günü Seoul’de yapilan 2011 Uluslararasi Drama ödüllerinde yapilan basin toplantisinda Profesör Martine Prost, kültürel içerikte yaraticiligin önemli oldugunu söyledi. Hallyu’nun Korelilerin tipik canliligini koruyacagi umutlarini da dile getirdi.

Ayni zamanda popüler bir aktör ve eski sarkici olan Park Yoo-chun, halkin seçtigi ödülün kabulü için konferansta bulundu. Fransa ve Romanya’dan da yaklasik 40 Hallyu hayrani konferansa katildi.

Bu yilki ödülleri 37 ülkeden toplam iki yüz kisinin katildigi çok fazla sayida kisi karsiladi. Finalistlerin tek, mini dizi ve drama dizisi kategorilerinde yarisacagi final turunda 39 gösteri yapilacak.

A professor of Korean studies at a Paris university said creativity is the most important factor in maintaining the worldwide popularity of Korean pop culture.

At a news conference on Monday ahead of the Seoul International Drama Awards 2011 in Seoul, Professor Martine Prost said that creativity in cultural content is important. She expressed hopes that the Hallyu content will maintain the vigor typical of Koreans.

Actor Yoo-chun Park, a popular actor and former singer, was also present at the conference as he was named for the people’s choice award. Approximately 40 Hallyu fans from France and Rumania attended the event as well.

This year’s awards received the largest number of entries with some two-hundred shows from a total of 37 nations. There are 39 shows that have made the final round, for which the finalists will vie for awards in the single, miniseries, and drama series categories.

S. Korean builders to send relief supplies to Libya

Hükümet, Güney Koreli insaat sirketlerinin Kuzey Afrika ülkesi olan Libya’ya iç savastan kurtulmasina yardimci olmak için 500.000 bin ABD dolari degerinde yardim malzemesi gönderecegini açikladi.

Arazi, ulasim ve deniz isleri bakani ekonomi politikasi yapicilarinin toplantisinda, Kuzey Afrika’da faaliyet gösteren 16 Güney Koreli insaat sirketinin malzeme bagislayacagini açikladi.

South Korean construction companies will send US$500,000 worth of relief supplies to Libya to help the North African country recover from its civil war, the government said Tuesday.

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said in a meeting of economic policymakers that 16 South Korean construction companies already operating in the North African country will donate the supplies.

Savunma bakanligi, Birlesmis Milletler güçlerinin bir parçasi olarak Kore Savasi’na katilan tek Latin Amerika ülkesi olan Kolombiya’daki bir askeri akademiye üç tekvando egitmeni gönderecegini açikladi.

Mayis ayinda egitmenler, bir subay ve iki astsubay kiyasiya bir rekabetin ardindan seçilmisti. Onlar askeri akademide Ispanyolca ve tekvando becerilerini gelistirdiler.

Kolombiya askeri akademisinde Japon karate dersleri durduruldu ve geleneksel Kore savas sanati olan tekvando bu yil ocak ayindan itibaren ögretilmeye baslandi.

The Defense Ministry says it will send three Taekwondo instructors to a military academy in Colombia, the only Latin American country that fought in the Korean War as part of U.N. forces.

The instructors, one officer, and two noncommissioned officers were selected in May after a fierce competition. They learned Spanish and taekwondo skills in the military.

The Colombian military academy halted its instruction of Karate of Japan and began to teach Taekwondo, a traditional Korean martial art, from January this year.

Smoking to be Banned in 20 Parks in Seoul

Seoul’deki 20 Parkta Sigara Içmek Yasaklaniyor

Persembe gününden itibaren Seoul’deki Büyük Park ve Namsan Park’ta sigara içilmesi yasaklanilacak.

Seoul Büyüksehir Belediyesi, eylül ayinda ilk olarak 20 sehir belediyesinin islettigi parklarda sigara içmenin yasaklanacagini açikladi. Seoul belediyesi haziran ayinda Seoul Meydani, Cheonggye Meydani ve Gwanghamun Meydani sigara içilmeyen alanlar olarak belirlemesinin ardindan yakinda harekete geçiyor.

Sehir hükümeti aralik ayindan itibaren baskente belirlenen parklarda sigara içen insanlara para cezasi uygulamayi düsünüyor.

Sehir belediyesi ayni zamanda “sigarasiz daireler” gibi bazi dairelerin belirlenmesi ile de projeyi genisletmeyi planliyor.

Smoking will be banned in Seoul Children’s Grand Park and Namsan Park starting from Thursday.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it is designating 20 city government-run parks as nonsmoking areas starting September first. The recent move comes after the Seoul government designated the Seoul Plaza, Cheonggye Plaza and Gwanghamun Square as nonsmoking areas earlier in June.

The city government plans to slap fines on people who light up in the capital’s designated parks starting from December.

The Seoul government also plans to expand a project on designating certain apartments as “nonsmoking apartments.”

Clash over Jeju naval base:

Sept. 2, JEJU, South Korea -- Residents and activists clash with police in Gangjeong Village on South Korea's southernmost island of Jeju on Sept. 2. The riot troops launched a surprise raid early morning to remove some 100 protesters who have been staging a sit-in against the government's move to build a new naval base. Started in January 2010, the four-year government project recently resumed after being suspended for about 10 months due to strong opposition from environmental and progressive civic organizations and opposition parties.

Koreans to honor Sept. 11 victims with classical music

Koreliler 11 Eylül Kurbanlarini Klasik Müzikle Anacaklar

Amerika Birlesik Devletleri'ndeki bir grup Koreli müzisyen, trajik bir olay olarak tarihe geçen 11 Eylül terörist saldirisinin 10. yil dönümünde saldirida hayatini kaybedenlerin ailelerinin de katilacagi anma töreninde bu ay içerisinde bir "baris konseri" vermeyi planliyorlar.

Bir yardim organizasyonu Washington Kore Senfoni Orkestrasi, konserin 11 Eylülde saat 19:30'da John F. Kennedy Sahne Sanatlari Merkezi'nde olacagini açikladi.

A group of Korean musicians in the United States plans to present a "peace concert" this month in commemoration of the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and their families, as the tragic incident marks its 10th anniversary.

The Washington Korean Symphony Orchestra, a charity organization, said it will open the concert at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 11 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
