Man Faces Extradition Over Art Looted by Nazis

NEW YORK - A Russian art dealer living in New York is fighting extradition to Poland to face charges accusing him of refusing to turn over an 18th-century painting taken from a Polish museum by the Nazis during World War II.

Lawyers for Alexander Khochinskiy were in a federal court in Manhattan on Monday to ask a judge to throw out an extradition complaint charging him with possessing stolen property. They argued there was not enough evidence to show Khochinskiy knew the 1754 painting - “Girl with a Dove’’ by Antoine Pesne - was stolen, as required by an extradition treaty, and that he was the legal owner.

Prosecutor Katherine Reilly conceded there were unanswered questions about how the painting ended up in Khochinskiy’s hands. But she argued there was still probable cause for granting extradition.

“I doubt that anyone knows quite what happened to it, and I don’t think we need to know,’’ Reilly said.

Khochinskiy, 64, was arrested at his apartment in February. He was later freed on a $100,000 bond.

U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff said he wanted to hear further arguments before ruling. He set another hearing for June 17.

The Third Reich took “Girl with a Dove’’ in 1943 from the National Museum in Poznan, Poland, according to court papers. At the end of the war, the Red Army recovered the painting and took it to a repository in the Soviet Union, the complaint says.

In 2010, Khochinskiy contacted the Polish Embassy in Moscow in 2010, saying he had discovered that the painting was on the list of missing art objects, according to court papers filed by the government. He also suggested that it could be returned in exchange for a cash payment compensating his family for land his mother lost during the war, the papers add.

Polish officials, once authenticating the painting at Khochinskiy’s gallery in Moscow, demanded that Khochinskiy return it without compensation in 2011. After not hearing back from him, Russian authorities agreed to try to seize the painting. But when they went to his gallery, it was gone, court papers say.

Khochinskiy’s lawyers have argued in court papers that he became the legal owner of the painting after inheriting it from his father.

Tour Of Seoul Neighborhood Brings Artist’s Work To Life

Seoul merkezindeki Changsin-dong, Kore'nin en sevilen modern dönem ressamlarından Park Soo-keun (1914-65) için çok özel bir yerdi.

Burayı -Geumseong/Gangwon- doğduğu yerden sonraki ikinci evi olarak adlandırırdı.
1950-53 Kore Savaşı sıralarında Kuzey Koreden sürülen ve Güneye kaçmak durumunda kalan ailesiyle mucize eseri bu tarihi bölgede kavuştu.

Park, geri kalan hayatını sanata adadı. Çevresinde gezip gördüğü ve hissettiği her şey çalışmalarında görülmektedir.

Ölümünün 50. yılı anısına düzenlenen özel serginin birçok nedenlerinden biri de Changsin-dong'un hemen sağ yanında yer alan Dongdaemun Tasarım Plaza'da tutuluyor olmasıdır.

Ziyaretçiler Yigansumun Sergi Salonunda Park'a ait 50 adet eserini görebilirler. Yine de "Benim En Büyük Oğlum, Park Sung-nam" (1952) adlı çalışma, Park'ın öz oğluyla kavuşmasından sonra çizildi. Eleştirmenlerin söylediğine göre, bu çalışma önce kaybedilen ve sonra tekrar bulunan bütün çocukları temsil ediyor. Park'ın birçok çalışması Korelilerin yaşadığı fırtınalı dönemi temsil ediyor.

Grup sonunda, Park'ın doğduğu ve çalışma alanına sadece 500 m uzaklıkta olan evine geldi. Burası şimdilerde 22 evden oluşuyor.

Changsin-dong, central Seoul, was a special place for Park Soo-keun (1914-65), one of Korea’s most beloved modern painters.

He called the neighborhood his second home after his birthplace, Geumseong in Gangwon. In the former area he miraculously reunited with his family, who had remained in North Korea while he fled to the South during the 1950-53 Korean War.

Park committed the rest of his life to art. Everything he saw and felt while wandering around the neighborhood can be seen in his work.

One of the many reasons the special exhibit commemorating the 50th anniversary of his death is being held at Dongdaemun Design Plaza is because the venue is located right next to Changsin-dong.

Visitors can view 50 of Park’s pieces at the Yigansumun Exhibition Hall. But what is more interesting is that the organizers have used the Changsin-dong area, its alleyways and the artist’s work space as an exhibition as well, which organizers say was a bold move.

A two-hour field trip will be held starting at 11 a.m. every Saturday from May 9 to June 27, encompassing varying themes such as “Urban Regeneration“ and “The Past and Presence of the Sewing Industry in Changsin, Dongdaemun.”

The JoongAng Ilbo, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, went on the first tour, which was led by Myongji University Prof. Yoo Hong-joon, former head of the Cultural Heritage Administration.

“According to history, the east side of Korea was weaker than the west side,” Yoo said. “Perhaps because ancient Koreans believed Mount Naksan [located in the east] has less influence than Mount Inwang [located in the west], people tried to protect Heunginjimun [another name for Dongdaemun, or the East Gate] by building a castle around it.”

Today, Dongdaemun remains the only gate surrounded by a castle among the four main entrances of old Seoul. Nevertheless, it was not enough to prevent enemies from breaking in during the 1950-53 Korean War.

Yoo, the author of the best-selling “My Survey of Cultural Heritages” series, noted that it is also interesting how both rich and average Koreans lived side by side in this area due to geographical reasons.

Those who fled from the Communists, including Park, settled here.

But wealthy individuals such as Nam June Paik (1932-2006), the internationally renowned video artist, were also born and raised in the area.

“As we can understand the time period of King Yeongjo and Jeongjo through the works of Kim Hong-do and Shin Yun-bok [the most well-known painters of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910)],” Yoo explained, “Park and Paik’s works give us the idea of the 20th century.”

Changsin-dong changed much as time went by and as Korea underwent rapid industrialization and urbanization, but some traces of Park’s paintings can still be found.

Case in point: Park In-suk, the oldest daughter of the artist and the real-life inspiration for “A Girl Tending to an Infant” (1954), reflected on carrying her younger brother on her back during her childhood while on the tour.

“Every time my father’s work sold, I was so happy that I could eat rice that day,” Park said while standing in front of the workspace.

“Otherwise, my family survived on clear soup with dumplings or bean-sprout soup.”

She recalled the old times while standing in front of Dongshin church, where her family used to attend services.

“My father was tone deaf but good at playing the harmonica. When I hear ‘Cuckoo Waltz,’ I still think of him. Singer Cho Young-nam also went to the same church as us. When he sang hymns, it literally moved me and quenched my spirit.”

The building that now houses a bindaetteok (mung-bean pancake) restaurant and a real estate agency was once Park’s home and workspace. The artist used to sit on the floor watching his children romp around while he painted his wife pounding and grinding grain.

Yoo wrote on the building’s drainpipe, the only object that remains untouched at the site, “A house where painter Park Soo-keun lived.”

“Due to financial reasons, Park worked on small pictures rather than big ones,” Yoo explained.

“His painting technique of using thick textures and the feeling of stone is set in the 1960s. It is very artistic, like religious pictures, and gives peace to my mind.”

His unique style can be seen in “A Cottage near the Well” (1953) and “Children on the Yard” (1963).

As 10 years passed, his lines became thinner and the feeling of texture changed.

The market area Park used to draw is now a toy market, full of children grabbing toys in one hand and their mother’s hand in the other. It is hard to see female street vendors selling fruit or carrying round baskets on their heads, any longer.

“Most men died in the war or worked abroad, which is why we could easily find women working at laundry places or markets in his paintings,” explained Lee Hyun-mi, a tour guide. “I feel attached to them as I can see the hardships they went through to earn a living.”

Yet the artwork “My eldest Son, Park Sung-nam” (1952) was drawn after Park reunited with his real son. It represents all the children of the time who were lost and then found, critics say. Most of Park’s works represent Koreans living through that tumultuous era.

The group finally arrived at the site of the house where Paik was born, which is just 500 meters away from Park’s workspace. The lot is now divided into 22 houses.

Yoo recollects memories of seeing Paik standing in front of a sign on the wall of a chicken soup store, which had “The house of artist Nam June Paik” written on it.

“In the 1970s, we had no TV in our house, so I thought Paik was the inventor of videos when I read about his video art in the newspaper,” he said. “It turned out I was wrong when I participated in the celebration of his 60th birthday held at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.”

Since then the two kept in touch with each other. When Yoo heard about Paik’s death, he took the day off and went to his funeral.

“There’s a saying that when people are near their death they return to the place where they were born,” Yoo explained.

“Paik said he wanted to go back to Changsin-dong in his latest interview as well. He missed the town so much and his childhood memories, but the visit in 1988 was his last.”

“Changshin” originally means prosperity and faith, but the exhibition organizers used the other meaning for it - refreshment - hoping the neighborhood of artists such as Park will be rediscovered and re-evaluated by the people of today.

“I hope my father’s beautiful pieces of work, which have memories of old times, can sow seeds and make sprouts,” said Park In-suk after touring the area.

Does the crossover of fine art and K-pop give the music genre more prestige or does the use of a Korean idol with international fame boost the country’s arts scene overseas? Or is it a win-win for both?

The Seoul Museum of Art (SEMA), apparently aiming at the latter, starts the “PEACEMINUSONE: Beyond the Stage” exhibition, an art show in collaboration with the K-pop icon G-Dragon and his agency YG Entertainment, today.

The show features three kinds of works - an art collection by G-Dragon; pieces created by artists inspired by the member of K-pop group Big Bang; and items by artists whose oeuvre the curators of the museum and YG think share many common points with the musician’s character.

Fourteen teams of artists, including Korea’s interactive media art studio SILO Lab and Britain’s digital art studio Universal Everything, participate in the exhibition.

According to the museum, the title “PEACEMINUSONE” represents the intersection of the ideal world and the world of deprivation, which is the way G-Dragon sees reality.

“I hope many people who have believed contemporary art is difficult to understand can have easier access to art through me,” said G-Dragon, whose real name is Kwon Ji-yong, in a press conference on Monday afternoon. “In addition to widening the range of people visiting art museums, this exhibition will also function as the point where pop culture and contemporary art meet,” said Kim Hong-hee, director of SEMA.

“Untitled G-Dragon” by Osang Gwon is a grand photographic sculpture based on a Baroque sculpture depicting the archangel Michael defeating the fallen angel Lucifer. Both the faces of the angel and Satan are based on G-Dragon’s.

The museum said the exhibition will tour foreign cities such as Shanghai and Singapore, which have many K-pop fans, after finishing in Korea.

When asked whether foreign visitors to the exhibition will exclusively reserve their interest for G-Dragon rather than the participating artists, the K-pop star said, “I don’t think so. The audience will remember at least an artist’s name or an art piece’s title, and it will contribute to people’s recognition of contemporary art.”

Among the works on display is Son Dong-hyun’s painting “Chronology of Hip Hop.” It depicts the faces of hip-hop artists who inspire G-Dragon and several symbolic objects within the large letters spelling out the word “hip-hop.” It is in the format of munjado, a traditional Korean art genre that depicts Chinese characters filled with small images related to the character’s meaning. Son is well known for combining pop culture and traditional Korean painting themes and techniques.

“I talked with G-Dragon two times in person and through many emails about the hip-hop artists,” Son said. “Many of those who inspired him overlapped with my favorite musicians.”

Osang Gwon, an artist recognized as a pioneer of photographic sculpture, created “Untitled G?Dragon, A Space of No Name,” a grand installation based on a Baroque sculpture of the archangel Michael defeating Lucifer. In this work, both faces are modeled after G-Dragon.

“Working on this, I saw many music videos of G-Dragon and was shocked by them,” Gwon said. “Their images were spectacular and I felt they could be very powerful in visual communication with the general public, which is also a concern of fine art.”

ChangMin and I had undergone training together when I was a trainee at SM, and SiWon was my high school mate. It really depends on how you view it. It’s good when you think it’s good, difficult if you think it’s difficult.

Q. ‘SS501’ Debut

I dreamt of becoming an idol while watching Seo Taiji & Boys, H.O.T., Scheskies, Shinhwa, god sunbaenim-deul. Actually my dream was to debut during high school days, taking the van to go to the Suneung (University Entrance Exam) venue with fans cheering for me, and taking the exam. (laughs) I was first signed to BM which is a SM subsidiary company. Thereafter I came to Seoul from Jeollabuk-do province and started training at SM. I was there from 1st year of high school for about a year. Then I went through puberty so was going through times where I wanted to quit for the next 1.5 years. My dream collapsed, and felt that I was too old at that time. Then I decided to become a singer who sings well because I had been practicing a lot on my singing. Then I was casted off the streets at the end of 19 years old. But because at that time I knew of the (idol making) system and did not believe in such system, thus did not go for it. But I became close with that person (who casted him off the street) and I got recommended by him for an audition at DSP where they are looking for members of a group to rival against DongBangShinGi. I went for the audition without any expectations, since they already have lots of choices for the members of the group. The vocal teacher highly recommended me since my voice range is higher than the other members. Actually I was a trainee at DSP for 3 months before debuting.

Q. How about slump?

Actually I didn’t have any slump. While doing activities as a group and compared to solo activities, the stage became smaller and number of fans is lesser, I heard that was considered a slump, however I think of it as trying to get recognition.

Q. Solo activities

I had for 3 years prior to my enlistment, but was regretful that I didn’t have more solo activities. I like HyunA’s style of rapping. I didn’t know anyone in common, so I had to ask someone who is close with B2M representative and Cube representative. We didn’t get to do the recording together.

Q. KBS2 Drama ‘Sent From Heaven’

I had a lot of scenes with YoonHye. I am shy with people I just met, so it was very awkward initially, but since we have a lot of scenes together, we became close.

Q. What is Heo YoungSaeng’s unique charm?

I think my charm is looking young. I am still being asked to check ID. Then they became very sorry after checking. My charm is baby face. I guess because I didn’t fix anything so that’s why. (laughs)

Q. A part of your body you are confident of

Shoulder. Because it’s wide. (laughs)

Q. Weight loss, control diet? Exercise?

I am particular about fattening food. Not long before I got discharged from army, I began managing (my weight) with the mindset that I must return back to the society. I didn’t eat much breakfast, for lunch and dinner, I only eat what is offered in the army but avoiding soup and carbonated drinks, etc as they are fattening food. This went on for about 5 months. I gained a lot of weight at one time, so I started weight lifting after losing some weight. I worked very hard at that time and strained my waist and cruciate ligament. I am doing rehabilitation now.

Q. Your dating style is

I think it differs with each person. I would be very affectionate to some people, and to some I will become an insensitive guy.

Soccer, I frequently play soccer.

Q. Loves to drink? Drinking capacity is?

My drinking capacity differs with the type of alcohol. Taking soju as a standard, I can drink about 2~3 bottles when drinking with other people, and about 1 bottle when drinking alone. I prefer wine. If you mix Perrier carbonated water and liquor, I think you won’t get drunk.

Adam Levine. Recently I fell in love with Maroon 5’s rock genre. I like uncommon music. I wanted to go for their concert when they were here but I couldn’t get the tickets.

I want to continue working in the entertainment circle that I am able to work in. I want to be a singer that continues to (provide) music, I also want to be a multi-entertainer having diverse range of activities. I will also release a solo album.

Q. Thing you want most this year, year end

I am planning to release an album with HyungJun and KyuJong in January~February. We should be coming up with a dance song. It’s a huge stress as it has been a long time since we release anything. We fret a lot on the title song, if it should be something we like or something that the public yearns for. I don’t think we will be using the group name ‘SS501’. We will use it when all 5 of us reunite, so we are considering other names. It will be released in the style of a mini album, with 5~6 songs.
