Korean High School Students Suffer Sleep Shortage

Koreli Lise Öğrencileri Uyku Sıkıntısı Çekiyor

Bir milletvekili, eğitim bakanlığı anketinin sonucunu gerekçe göstererek, Kore'de yaşayan her dört lise öğrencisinden en az bir tanesi, ağırlıklı olarak aşırı eğitim nedeniyle fiziksel olarak ve psikolojik sağlığı üzerinde kaygı uyandırarak altı saatten az uyduğunu söyledi.

Demokrat Parti'nin Kim Byung-wook temsilcisi geçen yıl nisan ve eylül arasında uykuda olan 765 lisedeki 82.883 öğrencinin yapılan ankete göre, katılımcıların yüzde 43.9'u gecelik altı saatten az uyuduğunu söyledi. İlkokul ve ortaokul öğrencileri için karşılaştırılabilir rakamlar sırasıyla yüzde 3,0 ve yüzde 12'dir.

Ankete göre cinsiyet olarak cevaplayan erkeklerin yüzde 35,6'sı altı saatten az bir süre uyurken kız öğrencilerdeki oran ise yüzde 52.9’dir.

Bölgeye göre, Daejeon'da ankete katılanların yüzde 61,6'sı, bir gece boyunca altı saatten fazla uyuyamadığını söyledi. Kuzey Gyeongsang Eyaleti tarafından yüzde 50,4 ile takip ederken şehri Busan, yüzde 49,2, Seoul, yüzde 48,9 ve Jeju yüzde 48,5 ile takip ediyor.

About one out of every four high school students in Korea sleeps less than six hours at night, due mainly to excessive studying, causing concern over their physical and psychological health, a lawmaker said, citing the outcome of an education ministry survey.

According to the survey of 82,883 students in 765 high schools nationwide on their sleep between April and September last year, 43.9 percent of the respondents reported that they slept for less than six hours per night, Rep. Kim Byung-wook of the Democratic Party said. The comparable figures for elementary school and middle school students were 3.0 percent and 12 percent, respectively.

By sex, 35.6 percent of the male respondents slept for less than six hours, while the figure for female students was a whopping 52.9 percent, according to the survey.

By region, 61.6 percent of those surveyed in Daejeon said they could not sleep for more than six hours a night. That city was trailed by North Gyeongsang Province with 50.4 percent, Busan with 49.2 percent, Seoul with 48.9 percent and Jeju with 48.5 percent.

Experts suggest their lack of sleep is attributable largely to studying deep into the night, as well as searching the Internet and playing games, and that it affects their health and development.

"It's a regrettable reality that about half of students are only able to sleep for less than six hours because of their burdens of study and college entrance examinations," Kim said.

Yuhan Foundation Gives Scholarships to 50 N. Korea-born College Students

Yuhan Vakfı, 50 K. Kore Doğumlu Üniversite Öğrencisine Burs Veriyor

Seoul merkezli kar amacı gütmeyen bir yardım kuruluşu olan Yunan Vakfı, Kuzey Kore'de doğan ve halen Güney Kore üniversitelerinde okuyan 50 üniversite öğrencisine 150 milyon Won'luk burs kazandırdığını açıkladı.

Yuhan Vakfı Cuma günü yaptığı açıklamada, 50 öğrencinin her birinin 3 milyon Won kazandığını ve çalışmalarının istikrarlı bir şekilde sağlandığını söyledi. Alıcılar, Kuzey Kore gazilerinin Güney'deki yerleşimine yardım etmek üzere kurulan bir kamu kurumu olan Kore Hana Vakfı aracılığıyla seçildiler.

Yuhan Vakfı başkanı Han Seung-soo, alıcıların kendilerini vatanseverlik ve birleşmiş bir Kore'nin kilit oyuncuları olarak görev yapacaklarını umduğunu belirtti.

A Seoul-based nonprofit charity organization says it delivered a total of 150 million won in scholarships to 50 college students who were born in North Korea and are currently studying in South Korean universities.

The Yuhan Foundation said Friday it gave each of the 50 students three million won to ensure a stable basis for their studies. The recipients were selected through the Korea Hana Foundation, a public agency set up to help North Korean defectors' settlement in the South.

The head of the Yuhan Foundation Han Seung-soo expressed hope that the recipients will commit themselves to patriotism and unification as key players of a unified Korea.
