South Korea's Wealth Gap Widens

South Korea’s wealth disparity is larger than expected, according to government survey data released this year.

The extensive survey, conducted by Statistics Korea on household finances and welfare, says the average annual income of South Korea’s upper 20 percent on the social ladder was about 50 million won. The bottom 20 percent earned an average seven-point-two million won. An income inequality metric comparing the incomes of the top and bottom 20 percent stood at six-point-nine.

The metric number is found by dividing the average income of the top 20 percent of the income ladder by the bottom 20 percent’s average income.

The number was larger than last year’s figure of five-point-seven, indicating that South Korea’s wealth gap has widened considerably since then.

The inequality metric used in the survey from 2007 through 2009 stood at five-point-six, five-point-seven and five-point-seven, respectively. In 2010, it fell to five-point-six and then rose to five-point-seven last year.

This year was tougher than ever for the South Korean economy, which has been fighting a recession amid the prolonged global economic slump.

Many businesses have shut down and restructured in almost all industries, including the shipbuilding and steel sectors.

South Korea managed to keep its exports in shape thanks to strong performances in the petrochemical, auto and IT industries.

The nation’s trade volume topped one trillion U.S. dollars for the second straight year in early December. With that feat, South Korea ranked eighth among countries around the world in terms of trade volume.

South Korea saw its sovereign credit rating rise back to the level it enjoyed before it was struck by the financial crisis of 1998. Its sovereign credit rating is higher than that of Japan’s for the first time in history.

More than 30 million smartphones were sold in South Korea amid patent-related legal battles between Samsung Electronics and Apple.

Now, the pressing tasks for South Korea are job creation and discovering new economic growth engines that will help the nation overcome the world’s stunted-growth trend.

Foreign Direct Investment Hits New High in S. Korea

Foreign direct investment in South Korea has reached a new high.

The Ministry of Knowledge Economy said Thursday that direct investment from aboard grew 19 percent year-on-year to 16-point-three billion U.S. dollars in 2012. That’s the highest figure to be posted since 1999 when foreign direct investment reached 15-and-a-half billion dollars shortly after the Asian financial crisis erupted.

By nation, investment from Japan surged 98 percent year-on-year to four-and-a-half billion dollars.

Investment from Hong Kong amounted to four billion dollars, from the U.S. three-point-seven billion and from European Union countries two-point-seven billion dollars.

The ministry said the increase is attributable to the nation’s free trade accords with the U.S. and the EU, as well as due to a rise in South Korea’s credit rating and enhanced investment environment.
