Introduction
The Gimhae Hanok Experience Hall was built by Gimhae City as part of a project to restore and preserve the structures and culture of Gaya, an ancient kingdom that flourished in the Gimhae area more than a thousand years ago. Operation of the Gimhae Hanok Experience Hall has been entrusted to the Gimhae Culture Foundation.

The original plan was to reproduce an enormous eight-building traditional house complete with 99 rooms, which was a symbol of wealth and authority for the nobility of the Joseon Dynasty. However, due to extenuating circumstances, one building could not be built. As a result, the facility is comprised of seven completed buildings housing 85 rooms, including the sarangchae (men’s quarters), anchae (women’s quarters), byeolchae (out-building), araechae (outer-wing building), bakkatchae (outbuilding), haengnangchae (servants’ quarters), and sadang (shrine).

The Gimhae Hanok Experience Hall is the pride of Gimhae. On the outside it is a historical recreation of Joseon noble’s house, but on the inside is equipped with modern convenience facilities. Packed with traditional Korean culture and hands-on activities, the hall provides visitors a true immersion into Korea’s proud past.

Surrounded by Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace and Jongmyo Shrine, Bukchon Hanok Village is home to hundreds of traditional houses, called hanok, that date back to the Joseon Dynasty. The name Bukchon, which literally translates to "northern village," came about as the neighborhood lies north of two significant Seoul landmarks, Cheonggyecheon Stream and Jongno. Today, many of these hanoks operate as cultural centers, guesthouses, restaurants and tea houses, providing visitors with an opportunity to experience, learn and immerse in Korean traditional culture.
Introduction:
Coming out of Exit 3 or 4 of Chungmuro Subway Station, you will see the normal city scenes of large buildings and bustling streets, but you are also right in front of Namsangol Hanok Village. You may find it interesting that this traditional Korean village is located between modern skyscrapers. This village has five restored traditional Korean houses, a pavilion, a pond and a time capsule as well, making it a perfect spot to take a leisure walk.

When you enter from the front gate, you will see the vast valley and Chunugak Pavilion to the left of a small pond. Beside the pond, there is a large open space where performances are usually held. On the other side, you will see five traditional houses. These houses were remodeled after the traditional houses of Joseon Dynasty and belong to those of various social classes, ranking from peasants to aristocrats. The furniture in the houses is situated to help guests understand the daily lives of the past, and the clean, traditional houses, as well as their antique items provide a great photo op.

If you would like to check out some souvenirs, stop by the traditional craftwork exhibit where you can buy small dishes and other items. You can also have some traditional tea and refreshments. On the grounds are traditional games that you may try such as neolttwigi (seesaw jumping), tuho (arrow throwing) and yutnori (traditional board game).

Don't forget to catch the traditional marriage ceremony that takes place during the weekends at Bak Yeong Hyo's Residence. The traditional marriage ceremony is an interesting event for both Koreans and foreigners and many gather to watch. During the winter season (November to February), there are not as many wedding ceremonies as compared to that during spring and fall. Weddings are typically held around 12:00 or 1:00 p.m. and visitors can take pictures with the husband and wife wearing traditional wedding costumes. There is also a time capsule commemorating Seoul’s 600 Year Anniversary that was buried in 1994 and is scheduled to be reopened four hundred years later in 2394.

To the southeast of the royal tomb, is a small monument that has been erected among the pine trees; next to the monument is a well called Najeong. According to Samguksagi (Historical records of the Three Kingdoms) and Samgungnyusa (Memorabilia from the Three Dynasties), Park Hyeokgeose, the founding monarch of Silla, was born by this well. In 69 BC, Sobeolgong, the head of Goheochon Village, saw a white horse on its knees by the well. When he approached the well he found that the horse had magically disappeared and that a large egg was left in its place, from which a boy was born. When the boy turned 13 years old (57 BC), he was appointed king by the village chiefs and began to rule the area then called ‘Seorabeol’. A memorial stone (2.25 meters high, 45 centimeters long, and 21 centimeters wide) was erected in 1803 in the third year of King Sunjo's rule (Joseon Dynasty) detailing the historical origins of the founding father of Silla.
Gwanbong Seated Stone Buddha was built using the rocks enclosing the rugged Palgonsan South Peak in Gyeonsan-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do as a background, like a folding screen. The peak is also called “Gatbawi” from the shape of the statue that looks like the Buddha wearing a gat, the traditional Korean hat.
Hair (cassia bark), which looks like a topknot, is clearly visible on his head. His face is round, corpulent, and elastic, but his eyes slant upwards, creating a solemn expression, without a benevolent smile. His ears are long enough to touch his shoulders, and his thick and short neck has three wrinkles, representing his Three Teachings. His slightly upward shoulders are wide, upright, and healthy, but his chest is plain and his body shape makes him look heavy and clumsy. His coarse but delicate hands, which are on his knees, look like Hangmachokjiin, with the end of his right hand pointing to the ground, making the statue look like an object of worship in Seokguram. The fact that in his left hand is a tiny medicine pot shows, however, that it represents a medicine Buddha.
The pedestal on which the statue sits is a quadrangle, and the clothes drape its front and back. The rocks enclosing the statue like a folding screen play the role of a halo, but the statue separately stands far away from the rocks. The Buddha’s corpulent but uncomfortable face, his formatted clothes’ lines, and his inelastic body show the characteristics of the 9th-century statue of the Buddha, which are different from those of the 8th-century Buddha.

Gatbawi Story
Legend has it that when Uihyun, a Buddhist monk, created the statue in the Silla Era to lead his dead mother to heaven, cranes flew at night to protect him from the cold, and provided him with three meals. According to another legend, when Wachon suffered from drought, the villagers set fire to the statue and caused it to become blackened. The dragon was so surprised upon seeing it that it brought down rains to wash the Buddha.
It is believed that if you pray to Gatbawi (yang) and Bulguksa (yin) at the same time, your prayer will be twice effective because while the Gatbawi Buddha in Palgongsan Mountain holds yang energy, the Bulguksa Buddha, also in Palgongsan Mountain, holds yin energy. As such, your sincere prayer to the two Buddhas on a single day will make your dream come true.

Traditional Korean rooms have multiple functions. Rooms are not labeled or reserved for a specific purpose; there is no definite bedroom or dining room for example. Rather, tables and mats are brought in as needed. Most people sit and sleep on the floor on thick mats.

Underneath the floors are stone or concrete ducts. Traditionally hot air was vented through these ducts to provide heat. This type of subfloor heating is called ondol. Nowadays, hot water is piped through cement floors covered with linoleum.

An ondol, also called gudeul, in Korean traditional architecture, is underfloor heating which uses direct heat transfer from wood smoke to the underside of a thick masonry floor. In modern usage it refers to any type of underfloor heating, or a hotel or sleeping room in Korean (as opposed to Western) style.

The main components of the traditional ondol are a firebox or stove (agungi; 아궁이) accessible from an adjoining (typically kitchen or master bedroom) room, a raised masonry floor underlain by horizontal smoke passages, and a vertical, freestanding chimney on the opposite exterior providing a draft. The heated floor is supported by stone piers or baffles to distribute the smoke, covered by stone slabs, clay and an impervious layer such as oiled paper.

History

Origin
The earliest use of ondol has been found at an archaeological site in present-day North Korea. A Bronze Age archaeological find, circa BCE 1000, discovered in Unggi, Hamgyeongbuk-do, in present-day North Korea, shows a clear vestige of Gudeul(Korean: 구들) in the Excavated Dwelling (Korean:움집 Chinese:竪穴住居) unearthed at the archaeological site.

Etymological Origin
The term Gudeul has been colloquially spoken for over two thousand years, while the term ondol has shown up in modern times, around the end of 19th century. According to a Korean folkloric historian Son Jintae(1900 - missing during the 1950-53 Korean War), Gudeul has been originated from guun-dol(Korean), which means heated stone, and its pronuciation has undergone some change from Gudol or Gudul to finally take the form of Gudeul. Ondol was first written in Chinese characters by modern-day writers.

Modern Development
Ondol had traditionally been used as an exclusive living space for sitting, eating, sleeping and pastimes, in most Korean homes, until housing styles were Westernized to enjoy modern comfort. The traditional type of ondol was heated by mainly rice paddy straws, agricultural crop waste, biomass or any kind of dried firewood. For short-term cooking, rice paddy straws or crop waste was preferred, while long hours of cooking and floor heating needed longer-burning firewood. Unlike modern-day water heaters, the fuel burning was either sporadically or regularly done (2 to 5 times a day), dependent on frequency of cooking and seasonal weather conditions.

With the traditional type of ondol, floor spots closer to the furnace were normally warm enough with warmer spots reserved for elders and honored guests. The conventional ondol had issues to be addressed, such as overheating of specific floor spots, carbon monoxide poisoning resulting from burning coal briquette, irregular distribution of heat on the floor, and environmental pollution. For these reasons most modern Korean homes started to have modern versions of ondol floors heated by circulated hot water from water heaters, or an electrical heating system of dielectric heating or induction heating since 1960s.

Currently, ondol are exclusively used for home heating, except for some remote areas tucked away from modern housing cultures.
