Jeongneung Royal Tomb is the tomb of Queen Consort Sindeok, the second wife of King Taejo (1392-1398), founder of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). However, this tomb was not maintained compared to other royal tombs because of a power struggle. The queen consort had many children which naturally induced a battle for the throne. Usually the son of the first wife is the successor of the throne, but she was determined to have one of her sons ascend the throne instead. However, the successor King Taejong killed all her sons and developed an extreme abhorrence towards the queen consort. When she died, King Taejong ordered not to maintain and preserve her tomb. Therefore, the tomb is rather unkempt and the layout and composition is different from other royal tombs.

Upon entering the red gate, the sacrificial building can be seen in front of the tomb along with a pavilion and tombstone. Stone sculptures of sheep and tigers watch over the tomb. A major difference between this tomb with other royal tombs is exhibited in the path from the red gate to the sacrificial building. Usually the path is a straight line, but at Jeongneung Royal Tomb, it is crooked and bent. Furthermore, the colour of the sacrificial building is dull and faded.
Even though the tomb symbolizes the turmoil and wrath of political struggles, many couples and families come to Jeongneung Royal Tomb for a stroll because of its peacefulness and natural surroundings.

This is the royal tomb where Queen Seondeok, the first queen and 27th monarch of the Silla is buried.

The Royal Tomb of Queen Seondeok (선덕여왕릉), located in Bomun-dong, is a round-shaped tomb with earthen layers, 73 meters in circumference. Aside from the fact that it was constructed using natural stones in double layers, the tomb has no other unique features.

As the oldest daughter of King Jinpyeong, Queen Seondeok became the first queen of the Silla Kingdom. As the daughter of King Jinpyeong(579- 632), she acceded to the throne. She contributed to the construction of famous building such as Cheomseongdae, one of world's earliest observatories existing, and Bunwhangsa Temple and unification of the three kingdoms with Kim Yusin and Kim Chunchu. This is the grave mound of the height of 6.8m and the width of 23.6m. There is stone circle of a few layers around the mound.

The history book named Samguksagi, or History of the Three Kingdoms, says that before she died, she asked the lieges to bury herself in the Buddhist country named 'Dorichoen.' However, they didn't know where it was until she told them it was the peak of Mt. Nangsan. Since King Munmu performed the rite for the Four Divas at the peak of Mt. Nangsan after he accomplished the unification of Three Kingdoms, people had known the intention why the queen named the place Buddhist country.

King Kim Suro founded Garakguk (A.D 42) as ruler of Gaya and helped to promote the magnificent Gaya culture. The Gaya period saw the cultivation of rice and production of iron, thereby playing a leading part in helping to form an ancient civilization in Korea. King Suro's tomb stands as a state symbol of the Gaya culture. King Suro was also the family founder of the Gimhae Kim and Heo families. According to legend, King Suro was the first person to hatch from eggs. Nearby Gujibong is where golden eggs supposedly came down from the sky, from which the King emerged. Thus his name was Suro.

Queen Inhuh was a princess of the Ayuta state in India. Right before her death, she ordered two of her nine sons to follow her family name of Hea, which formed the origin of the Gimhae Heo family. This is why men and women having Gimhae Kim or Heo as their family name cannot get married.

The tomb has been designated Historic Site #73. In 1580, the 13th year of the reign of King Seonjo (r.1567-1608) of the Joseon Kingdom (1392-1910), governor Ho Yop of the Yeongnam region (North and South Gyeongsang Provinces) had the tomb repaired. There are several stone monuments to the achievements of King Suro and buildings on the grounds, including Sungseon-jeon, which contains the ancestral tablets. King Gojong (r. 1863-1907) named the structure Sungseon-jeon in 1878. The gravestone in front of the tomb was erected in 1647, the 25th year of the reign of King Injo (r. 1623-1649).
The 10th ruler of the Joseon Dynasty, Prince Yeonsan (1476-1506), ascended the throne, following King Seongjong in 1494. During the first four years, Prince Yeonsan carried out relatively good civil administration with the political heritage from King Seongjong’s reign. Then, he provoked a lot of major massacres such as the Muosahwa and the Gapjasahwa, and executed many scholars. He squandered national finance with endless extravagance and dissipation. When he heard the circumstances of ousting his birth mother, the Lady Yun, he started to do immoral things. He killed two royal concubines of King Seongjong and their sons. He killed his grandmother, Queen Dowager Insu, by hitting his head against her. At that time, she was ill in bed and was scolding her grandson’s atrocious doings. He gave a posthumous title of the queen to his birth mother, the Lady Yun, and changed the title of her tomb from the Hoemyo to the Hoereung. And then he performed a sacrificial rite for her with King Seongjong. He committed countless acts of maladministration: he changed the Seonggyungwan (the top educational institution of the Joseon Dynasty) to the place for sensual pleasures, the Wongaksa Temple to the gathering place for the Gisaeng (singing and dancing girls) and the Hongcheonsa Temple to a house barn. In 1506, he was dethroned with the Jungjongbanjeong (a revolt to enthrone King Jungjong) and was exiled to a house surrounded by a splinter wall at Gyodongdo Island, located in the northwest of the Ganghwado Island, and died there of a disease. He had five sons and one daughter with the Lady Sin (the Lady of Prince Geochang), and two sons and one daughter with a concubine, but all of his sons died right after birth or in the place of exile. Prince Yeonsan was first buried in the Gyodongdo Island, the place of his exile. Later, his wife, the Lady Sin, wrote a letter to King Jungjong, asking to change his burial site, and his tomb was moved to the current place in 1513. When King Jungjong granted royal permission of changing the burial site, he ordered to rebury the tomb with courtesy suitable for the title of the Wangjagun (a title given to a son born of a concubine). Therefore, the tomb of Prince Yeonsan has a low wall with three sides, two stone tables, two stone lamps, a pair of stone posts, two pairs of the stone images in the form of a civil official and a table to put an incense burner.
Yeonsan, annesi Lady Yun’a ünvanını verdi ve annesinin mezarını Hoemyeo’dan Hoereung’a taşıdı. Yeonsan'a Wangjagun ünvani verildi. (Wangjagun, cariyeden doğmuş prens demektir.)

Prens Yeonsan'ın mezarında üç alçak duvar, iki taş masa ve iki taş fener bulunmaktadır.
Böylece Danjong on iki yaşındayken tahta geçti.

(Yani Kraliçe Jeongsun) Danjong, tacını amcası Prens Suyang’a bıraktı böylece kral olma hakkından vazgeçmiş oldu. Kral Sejo'nun hükümetine karşı gelen ve isyan eden Kral Danjong’un ünvanı Prens Nosan’a düşürüldü ve Yeongwol, Cheongnyeongpo'ya sürgüne gönderildi. Asil olmayan kimse olarak ünvanı alındı.

1457 yılında on yedi yaşındayken öldürüldü. Eom Hongdo, Danjong’un cesedini Donggang Nehri’ne attı ve gizlice Dongeuljisan Dağı'na gömdü. 1698 yılında Kral Danjong hükümdarlığı döneminde Prens Nosan, Kral Danjong ünvanını aldı. Atalara ilişkin belgesi Kraliyet ailesinin korumasına alındı. Kral Sukjong, Danjong’un gizlice gömüldüğü yeri buldu ve buraya Jangneung (Yeongwol) kraliyet mezarını yaptırdı.
This is the royal tomb of the 6th King Danjong (1441-1457) of the Joseon Dynasty. Being a son of King Munjong and Queen Hyeondeok from the Gwon family, King Danjong lost his mother just one day after his birth. He was installed as Wangseson (the Eldest Grandson of the King) at the age of eight, and became the Crown Prince when King Munjong ascended the throne in 1450. Following the death of King Munjong after two years and four months of his reign, he ascended the throne at the tender age of 12.

Among 18 princes of King Sejong, Prince Suyang had a high ambition and great talent. He eliminated his political opponents with the sword and seized the power. This is the Gyeyujeongnan. King Danjong received a daughter of Song Hyeonsu as a queen (Queen Jeongsun) in 1454. And he gave up his crown to his uncle, Prince Suyang and lost his power to be the abdicated king. When the opposition against the ruling of King Sejo grew and a rebellion broke out at last to restore the abdicated king, King Danjong was degraded to Prince Nosan and exiled to Yeongwol. Banished in Cheongnyeongpo of Yeongwol, King Danjong was degraded again to the level of a commoner from Prince Nosan. He was killed in 1457 when he was 17 years old. Eom Hongdo took care of Danjong’s corpse dumped in the Donggang River and secretly buried it on the edge of Mt. Dongeuljisan. Later, in 1698, when King Sukjong reigned, Prince Nosan was posthumously reinstalled and received the title of King Danjong. His ancestral tablet was placed in the ancestral shrine of the royal family and the title Jangneung was granted as the name of the tomb. King Sukjong found the place where the secret burial was made and created the Jangneung in that area.
Yeongneung was constructed after the death of the queen during the King Sejong, in 1446. The east part of Yeongneung was assigned for the queen and the west part for the King Sejong before his death. The royal couple was buried together as the king passed away. This tomb is the first one to have separated rooms for each coffin inside. The tomb was arranged after the rules stipulated in "Gukjooryeui" and became the sample for other royal tombs at the early time of Joseon. There were some claims that the location of this tomb was inauspicious during the reign of King Sejo. The twelve-sided-balustrade is placed surrounding the tomb. The stone figure that had been installed before the move was buried at the same spot but in 1974 they were discovered and moved to the monument center of the Great King Sejong. Other statues such as the monument of Hunmin, and the Great King Sejong were built in 1977 under the project of improving Yeongneung.

Bu mezar, Song ailesinden Kraliçe Jeongsun (1440-1521)'un kraliyet mezarıdır. Kraliçe, 6. Kral Danjong'un yasal eşidir. Kraliçe Jeongsun, 1454 yılında kraliçe olmuştur (Kral Danjong'un 2. yılında). Birbirini izleyen yılda, Kral Danjong Prens Suyang için tahttan çekildi ve eski kral olunca Kraliçe Dowager Uideok unvanını elde etti. Prens Nosan, Gangwon-do eyaletinde bulunan Yeongwol'a sürüldüğünde, onun hayatından bir parça olmak zorunda kaldı.

When Prince Nosan was exiled to Yeongwol in Gangwon-do province, she was forced to part from him for life. She built a thatch-roofed house in Yeonmijeongdong outside of the Dongdaemun (the East Gate) in Seoul and named it the Jeongeobwon (the current Cheongnyongsa Temple), and stayed there, longing to be reunited with King Danjong. Given the news of the death of King Danjong at the age of 17, Queen Jeongsun went up to the top of the mountain (the Dongbangbong Peak) behind the temple every day and fell into a deep sadness while looking in the direction of Yeongwol.
