Chuseok, Korean Thanksgiving Day, is one of the biggest and most important holidays in Korea. Family members from near and far come together to share food and stories and to give thanks to their ancestors. In 2017, Chuseok Day falls on October 4. As the day before and the day after are also part of the holiday, this year’s full holiday period will take place for ten days at the longest, from September 30 to October 9, including the weekends, National Foundation Day on October 3, and Hangeul Day on October 9.

Many Koreans visit their hometowns to spend quality time with their family, as well as spend time with friends. The holidays also provide a good opportunity to enjoy traditional cultural experiences throughout Korea.
Black Day (Korean: 블랙데이) is an unofficial holiday observed on April 14 each year. It is mostly observed in South Korea by singles.
The day is associated with Valentine's Day and White Day as a holiday on the 14th day of the month. On this day, people who did not receive gifts on the previous two days gather and eat jajangmyeon. This day is specifically for single people.

Black Day builds on the romantic aspect of Valentine's Day and White Day. As the chocolates received on Valentine's Day are interpreted to symbolize a man's popularity and the chocolates given on White Day are used solely for romantic purposes, Black Day focuses on the people, especially singles, who did not receive any gifts on either of the holidays.
On the day, singles who have not received presents on both days gather wearing black to 'commiserate' over black-colored food, especially jajangmyeon. During the meal, they complain about their lack of intimate relationships and chocolate gifts.

Valentine's Day in Korea is a bit different from Valentine's Day elsewhere in world. In fact, Valentine’s Day is one of 12 "love days" celebrated on the 14th of every month in Korea. These days range from the popular (White Day) or depressing (Black Day), to the bizarre (Hug Day) and everything in between. Big money is both spent and made on Valentine’s and White Day, while the other love days receive little to no commercial attention.

Rather than the catch-all holiday it is in the rest of the world, on Valentine's Day in Korea women give chocolate to men as a sign of affection. Traditionally, men that receive these gifts will give a gift in return the following month on White Day. This has been changing in recent years, as retailers have begun targeting Men and Women on both days. As such, the day is a couples day, rather than a generally observed holiday as it is in countries like the United States.

Korea was exclusively an agricultural country not so long ago, and the main crop was rice. Rice farming starts from spring when the grains are planted under cover and continues through the hot, wet summer, until the heavy heads of rice are harvested in the autumn. So, in order to take care of this vital crop throughout the year, our ancestors had to understand the weather from spring through autumn. They divided a year into spring, summer, autumn, and winter and each season into a further 6 divisions. This gave Korea 24 seasons (Jeol-gi) altogether.
Each of these had its own significance in terms of predicting changes in the weather, and gave rise to various idioms associated with seasonal activities.

Gwangju Demokratik Ayaklanmasında doğru bir tarihsel olay kurmak ve değerlendirmek gerekmektedir. Görüşler aşağıdaki gibi kabaca özetlenebilir;
Sonunda ayaklanmalarla Park Chung-Hee'nin Yushin (Yenileme) baskıcı sisteminin devrilmesinde belirleyici rol oynanmış oldu. Chung rejimin ayakta kalması için uğraştı fakat sonucunda her yıl Mayıs ayında Gwangju'nun anılmasından ötürü başarısız oldu. Ulusal Demokratik sürecinin başlangıcı olmuştur. Chung'un 5. Cumhuriyetinin devrilmesine sebep olmuştur.

Gwangju Demokratik Ayaklanması, Milli Demokratikleşmeye gitmek adına insanların özgürlüğünü, haklarını, onurunu korumuş oldu ve tüm bu olaylar her yaştan insanın demokratikleşme adına bilince ulaşmasını sağlamıştır.
The most tragic and disgraceful incident in modern Korean history took place in Gwangju in May 1980. During The Uprising many citizens of Gwangju were killed by soldiers. It started whit the December 12, 1979 coup by Chun Doo-Hwan's military junta who occupied the Chonnam Provincial Hall whit armed forces sent to Gwangju by the Martial Law Enforcement Headquarters. After the assassination of President Park Chung-hee, a group of politically minded soldiers undertook Operation Chungjung (Operation True Heart) to quell The Uprising in Gwangju. In this way, the Fifth Republic came into existence. The victims of the martial law force's brutality numbered 4,369 all told: 154 killed, 74 missing, 4,141 wounded (including those who died from their wounds) and placed under arrest. This data is based on the present condition of compensation related to the May 18 Uprising, as of November 31, 2006. Among the 7,173 requested cases, 5,060 were admitted. The number of people illegally taken into custody during the period of Martial law was more than 3,000, and nobody knows how many people were unjustly arrested while they were demonstrating against Martial Law. Recent history has proven that The Gwangju Democratic Uprising was a victory, not a defeat, and that the people who lost their lives in Gwangju did not give their lives in vain. Now they are our heroes. Although the Gwangju Democratic Uprising seemed to end in faliure, that faliure became an inspiration for The Democratic Consciousness that fueled opposition to the dictatorship of the 1980s. However, it was only after many twists and turns that the Gwangju Democratic Uprising was properly defined as a people's resistance, and not a riot. At the time, Government authorities referred to the uprising as the "Gwangju Affair", a riot or rebellion backed by some seditious powerscheming to overthrow the government. In June 1987, howaver, people throughout the contry slowly started to recognize the true nature of The Gwangju Uprising of May, 1980. In June 1988, whit the advent of the Sixth Republic, The Uprising was renamed the Gwangju Democratization Movement in order to restore national harmony.

Additionally, in the 13th National Assembly, the change in the balance of political power made it possible to hold a hearing concerning The Gwangju Uprising. This hearing was televised all over the country, and it played an important role in spreading the truth of what had happened in Gwangju. It brought to light how brutally martial law forces had treated the citizens for those ten days in May. In 1993 on May 13th, whit the start of a civilian government, Presitend Kim Young-Sam made clear his position on The Gwangju Democratic Uprising in a speech: The bloodshed of Gwangju in May, 1980 is the cornerstone of this Country's Democracy. Its victims dedicated their lives to democracy. He continued by indicating the shift in perception that had taken place: this government today stands in line whit the Gwangju Democratization Movement. In this announcement, he redeemed The Gwangju Democratic Uprising. Again, thanks to a drive to set history to rights, after that speech on May 13, the 5.18 Special Law was enacted. It is rated as a great contribution in bringing the military junta, who had cruelly trampled upon Gwangju, to trial, upholding law, justice, and history and in healing the wounds that the nation had suffered in the past.

Contrary to this new perspective, however, the Supreme Court then ruled that The Gwangju Uprising was a peoples' rebellion and declared the people who took part in The Uprising to be a mob. So The Gwangju Democratic Uprising will remain a rebellion and the participants a mob, until there is a reversal of the ruling through retrial. The full truth of The Gwangju Democratic Uprising has yet to be disclosed. After the extension of martial law on May 17, 1980, several questions remain: (1) why were The Martial Law forces sent to Gwangju reinforced; (2) who acted as the leader of the army; and (3) who gave orders for the army to fire? We still do not know. Equally, we are still unsure about what role the United States military and government played in the decision process, and how many innocent citizens were killed. Even though most military officers have been strictly judged by law and history, the truth is, that even now we are as much in the dark as ever. It is therefore our duty to set the matter straight.

In order to correctly establish the historical meaning of The Gwangju Democratic Uprising, we should evaluate its character.
Opinions can be roughly summed up as follows:
1.The Gwangju Democratic Uprising offered important inspiration to the traditional spirit of Democratic Uprisings in Korea. The Gwangju people, in the last analysis, rose against a military government which had originally appeared on the scene through a military coup defeat on May 16, 1961. That coup denied the spirit of the April 19th Democratic Revolution of 1960 and established an oppressive system of government.
2.The Gwangju Democratic Uprising shows that people are able to be a dynamic power in national histories. During the 1980s, thanks to The Gwangju Democratic Uprising, people from all quarters of life, laborers, farmers, students, the poor, the religious, artists, intellectuals and dissidents, came to be profoundly conscious of their power in The Democratic Movement. The Spirit of Uprising gave rise to the development of a national Democratic Movement.
3.The Gwangju Democratic Uprising demonstrated that armed resistance against an unjust government is a human right, and that the justice of such resistance could be officially sanctioned. The Gwangju Democratic Uprising which had been denounced by the authorities as a rebellion of armed rioters has been renamed by the Government, 'The Gwangju Democratic Movement'. The people's rights, which not even The Peasant Uprising in 1894, The Donghak Revolution, nor the conflict of arms with Japan had not yet officially established, was properly recognized through The Gwangju Democratic Uprising.
4.The Gwangju Democratic Uprising led to a rejection of the Chun Doo-hwan regime's claims of legitimacy and morality. In the end, The Uprising played a decisive part in overthrowing the regime which had continued the oppressive policies of President Park Chung-Hee's Yushin (Renovation) System. Chun's regime tried to make use of every loophole possible, and it grossly abused its authority, but finally, it collapsed under the waves of resistance which broke out a new every May in Gwangju in the years following The Uprising. From this point of view, The Gwangju Democratic Uprising played a decisive role in motivating the national democratic movement. Furthermore, it established a new political precedent for the people by overthrowing Chun's Fifth Republic through the people's general agreement.

The Gwangju Democratic Uprising should not be considered a painful, frustrated chapter of an age, but should be placed in the modern history of this country as the starting point of Democratization. It should go down in Korea's national history and national consciousness as an inspiring stand for human freedom and dignity.

Gwangju Demokratik Ayaklanmasında doğru bir tarihsel olay kurmak ve değerlendirmek gerekmektedir. Görüşler aşağıdaki gibi kabaca özetlenebilir;

Pepero Day is an observance in South Korea similar to Valentine's Day but held on November 11. The original purpose of the Pepero Day was to exchange peperos with each other in hopes of becoming taller and thinner. The current purpose is to exchange peperos to show affection for friends and loved-ones.

The exact origins of this day are unknown. The origins are usually traced to a news story set in 1983. In the story, two female middle school students in the Yeongnam region exchanged peperos wishing that they would both become tall and thin. There is some doubt about this story. Some argue that the origin was due to the shape of 1’s in the date (November 11 – 11/11) resembling peperos. While some attribute the similarity of shapes as factors that attributed to the popularity but not its origin.

The fad spread with the idea that, for maximum effectiveness for height and thinness, one must eat 11 packets of Pepero on November 11, 11:11 am and 11:11 pm at 11 seconds exactly. From 1997, Lotte started to use the aforementioned school story to successfully promote Pepero Day. The trend led to other companies creating similar-shaped snacks to participate on Pepero Day. As of 2012, Lotte was making 50% of its annual sales on Pepero Day. As of 2013, several department stores including Hyundai Department Store, Shinsegae, and Lotte Department Store were benefiting for people celebrating the day while stores such as E-mart and Homeplus were specially displaying and selling peperos on the day.

Pepero Day has been criticized for being a business tool of certain companies and for having high calories which is contradictory to its original meaning. Alternatives include "Garaetteok Day", which promotes Farmer’s Day through exchanges of garaetteok (sticks of white tteok).
Pepero Day has been criticized for being a business tool of certain companies and for having high calories which is contradictory to its original meaning. Alternatives include "Garaetteok Day", which promotes Farmer’s Day through exchanges of garaetteok (sticks of white tteok).

138 students and workers were killed and from 1,000 to 2,000 injured when the police fired on a demonstration, on April 19th, against the rigged elections of last month which maintained the Syngman Rhee clique in power. Demonstrations had broken out against the corrupt dictatorship in all the main towns of South Korea, including Seoul, Inchon and Taegu. Troops fired on demonstrators in these and other towns. As always with reactionary governments in a panic, the Rhee dictatorship tried to stem the tide of revolt by using force. Just as the Verwoerd government did in South Africa. And of course in the charged and bitter atmosphere due to 10 years of repression, graft, and corruption, with the mounting tide of revolt it had the opposite effect.

Each day the opposition mounted. Despite martial law the workers, students, and even high schoolboys, redoubled their demonstrations, and with revolutionary instinct marched right up to the soldiers with fixed bayonets, appealing to them to come over to the people. Each day the demonstrations mounted in fury culminating on April 26th with practically the bulk of the workers and students in the capital Seoul demonstrating for the overthrow of the corrupt regime. 500,000 marched in the streets of Seoul dragging a statue of Syngman Rhee with a rope round its neck, demanding his resignation. 30 were killed in clashes with troops. But these martyrs did not die in vain, Syngman Rhee had to announce his resignation, as the victorious masses roamed through the streets of Seoul. His helicopter is at the ready “in case the masses get out of hand.”

Revolution begins

This marks the beginning of revolution in South Korea. The hand-picked National Assembly, puppets and tools of the Syngman Rhee clique has hurriedly passed a resolution declaring the rigged elections of last month, which saw the re-election of Syngman Rhee and his tools, null and void. In an endeavour to maintain his rule Syngman Rhee had secured the resignation of the vice-President and the Cabinet, but tried to maintain his own position. The masses recognised that this would mean no real change. Hence they had redoubled their efforts. Syngman Rhee, despite his bloodstained crimes, has always had the backing of the American government. They were quite prepared to overlook the dictatorial police-state, corrupt and rotten, like that of Chiang Kai-Shek so long as he remained an ally of the “free world”, i.e. American capitalism.

US tries to save Rhee

Right to the last minute the American ambassador has tried to save the personal rule of Syngman Rhee as an element of stability in the situation. His shameful record has made not the slightest difference to these self-styled defenders of the democratic way of life. The Times of April 27th admits this. Reporting the American ambassador's statement on the previous day, “I am convinced the authorities are earnestly working towards redress of the people's justifiable grievances. I therefore trust the people will show respect for law and authority.”, it comments: “In this remark, some observers thought they detected the United States authorities' desire to preserve President Rhee at least in the role of a useful figurehead and a guarantee of internal stability.”
