"Kore", Kore tarihinin Goryeo döneminde türetilmiştir. Goguryeo antik krallık dönemine başvurulmuştur. Orta Dogu'nun Cauli diye adlandırılan tüccarlarının (Çince telaffuzdan gelir), daha sonra Corea ve Kore hecelemesinden gelir. Ama "Kore" artık yaygın olarak kullanılan İngilizce'de Kuzey Kore ve Güney Kore olarak kullanılıyor. K, Cermen dillerinde sık sık kullanılır. Roman dillerinde ise C tercih edilmektedir. Kore Dilinde, Güney Korede Han-Guk olararak bir bütün halinde kullanılırken, Kuzey kore de ise Chosŏn'dur. Ikinci isim, aynı zamanda Romanised Joseon, önceki Gojoseon ve Joseon Hanedanlığındandır. İngilizce de, "Sabah Dinginliğinin Ülkesi" olarak lakaplandırılmıştır.
