Typhoon Damrey to Affect Jeju, Southern Regions Thursday

Typhoon Damrey is approaching the nation from waters south of Japan.

The Korea Meteorological Administration said Wednesday that the typhoon will approach the southern coasts of Jeju Island early Thursday.

The storm is expected to soak Jeju with between 50 and 150 millimeters of heavy rainfall on Thursday, while the southern coasts of South Jeolla Province are likely to see precipitation of between five and 40 millimeters.

The typhoon is projected to bring hot air as it moves northward, further raising the nation’s already sweltering temperatures and high humidity.

With inland areas continuously seeing tropical nights on Tuesday, a heat wave warning was issued for inland areas in southern regions and the Chungcheong provinces as well as the northern parts of Gyeonggi Province and the city of Wonju in Gangwon Province.

Nights are defined as tropical when the lowest temperature observed overnight is over 25 degrees Celsius.

First Heat Warning Issued in Seoul

A heat wave warning was issued in Seoul Wednesday morning after the nation's weather agency forecast highs of more than 35 degrees Celsius for the second day in a row.

The Korea Meteorological Administration raised the capital's heat advisory that had been in effect for a week to a warning at 11 a.m. based on forecast stifling afternoon temperatures.

This is the first heat wave warning to be issued in Seoul since the heat wave alert system was introduced in 2008. A warning is issued when afternoon highs of above 35 degrees Celsius are forecast for more than two consecutive days.

The weather agency says the sudden rise of temperatures in the western part of the nation is because easterly winds blowing in from the edges of a high pressure front heat up as they cross over Taebaek Mountain. The weather agency predicts the heat wave to continue for a while.
