Kang Sok-kyong has written a variety of books on the theme of salvation. In this book she probes into the archeological remains of Kyongju, Shilla, one of the three ancient kingdoms of the Korean peninsula. She tells of the folklore and legends of the time. In addition to its matter-of-fact account of historical sites and monuments, the book offers a lyrical description of various aspects of the time, including the international relations and history of ancient Korea, along with its kings and queens. With themes of civilization, tenacity, sorrow, loneliness, comfort, dreams, and spirit, the book recounts the mysteries of Kyongju, which has long been cherished for its millennium-long culture. It also gives the writer’s frank impression of the old kingdom. The distinguished photographer, Kang Woon-gu, vividly revives the features of Kyongju with his beautiful photographs.
