Her arpa sapında 500-600 tane bulunurdu, bugünün hesabıyla 1/10. Nasıl olduğuysa ilginç bir hikayedir. Bir kadın küçük kız çocuğuyla tarla yolundayken, arpa saplarını kopardı ve çamurlu suya düşüp ıslanan kızını kuruttu. Etrafa bakmak için yeryüzüne gelmiş olan Tanrı, arpa saplarıyla kızını kuruturken gördü. Tanrı gördüklerinde dolayı öfkelendi. İnsanların yiyecek olarak başakları hak etmediğine karar verdi ve bu nedenle arpa saplarında tanelerin büyümesine izin vermeyecekti. Bu durumda insanlar endişelendi ve sordu;
İnsanlar yiyecek olarak başağı hak etmiyorsa, zavallı tavuklara ne olacak? Onlar yanlış hiçbir şey yapmadı ve yapmadıkları bir şey için onları cezalandırmak korkunç değil mi? Tavukların açlıktan ölmesine izin mi vereceksiniz?

There used to be 500 or 600 grains in an ear of barley, which has only 1/10 of that number today. How it happened is an interesting story. A woman, who was on her way to the field with her baby daughter, plucked ears of barley and dried her daughter, who fell in a puddle and got wet, with them. God, who came down to the earth to look around, saw her drying her daughter with the ears of barley. He got furious at that sight. He decided that humans didn't deserve to have barley as food and so he would not let grains grow on the ears of barley. At this, humans were worried and said to Him,
"Even if we humans don't deserve barley as our food, what about the poor chickens?They didn't do anything wrong, and it's not fair to punish them for what they didn't do. Are you going to let the chickens starve to death?"
God, reasonable as he was, said that he would leave enough grains for the chickens. That's why barley today has only 50 or 60 grains on its ear.
