Röportajın İngilizcesi:

Interview PROPER
During the interview, Song Il Gook appeared in the studio, carrying himself well. With a sporty fashion sense, bearing a large paper package in both hands, he arrived. He started with the greeting "I am not completely late"
Then he gave me the paper bag. Inside, you might think it was just items from an ordinary store, but I was told by his stylist that the gifts inside were personally chosen by him. We were very impressed. He called it "personalized JuMong stuff" and we felt the warmth of his personality. Seriously, even before the interview started, we already sensed that this would be an interesting conversation. We could even smell his fragrance from afar. The unexpected gift and his presence made it all the more interesting. We felt very pleased and honored.
Legend:
Q = Question
A = Answer (SIG)
Q : After playing the popular historical drama, JuMong, what's next?
A : Presently, we are in the middle of shooting “Lobbyist”. Some days ago, we finished shooting in America, and in Korea where we had some shots taken.
Q : In The Lobbyist, who do you play?
A : I play the role of Halley; no it is a more understandable name, it's Harry
(reporter laughed). Harry had an unhappy boyhood and eventually as he grew, became a weapons broker.
Q : You had a global fan meeting right? How was it?
A : Although they were not the usual Korean fans, I felt shy. It was a foreign place and it was a bit hard and strange.
Q : HaeSin and JuMong are both historical action dramas. Your roles in both were strong and quite similar, do you agree?
A : Both series were extreme. The difference? In HaeSin, I was bad all throughout the drama and it has a connection with my real life. Oh, that was a clear joke (he laughed). But today, comparing that with JuMong, seriously, there was a big difference. I am bad in HaeSin and I am good in JuMong.
Q : How about the appearance?
A: It depends on the acting, and the make up (laughs). In JuMong, the dialogue was more serious and had a great deal of depth. But there was more pressure with HaeSin, because of the words; the enunciation was different. I had a hard time wearing the armor in midsummer, but I got used to it, after all, JuMong was a work destined for me.

Q : Destiny for you? After deciding that you were getting the role of JuMong, were you aware that the name itself means "expertise with bow and arrow"?
A : Yes. The role was not something I could ignore, nor could I say no to it. The fact that one portrays the role of a hero; it something you cannot dare forget. No matter what I do, the role will always be connected to me and shall always remain inside of me. I bought my own bow and I even used it during the shooting. It wasn’t difficult. Additionally, my name means “One Country” and my birthday falls on October 1st, Korea’s National Military Day. My mom and maternal grandfather have contributed to the country. JuMong somehow, has something in relation to my ancestors...that is perhaps more than just a destiny.
Q : How does your mother react now that you are at a much higher level as an actor?
A : My mother always praises me in my great achievements, she gives me presents. When I got the role in HaeSin, I thought it would be difficult to handle JuMong, but that turned out not to be the case. There were many instances where I had to ride horse-back just like in HaeSin. With regards to the handling of bow and arrow, for the sake of the role of JuMong, I had to prepare for that.

Q : Was there any difficulty in playing the role of JuMong?
A : While riding the horse downhill, I had to pull the bow. There were many dangerous stunts, and action scenes that needed right timing but fortunately, we were able to finish those scenes safely. During the bow and arrow competition scene where I was blindfolded, I hit a bullseye.
Q : When you say JuMong, the meaning is clearly “archery expert”, but....
A : Actually, it hits to that mark. It was not easy, but because I learned some archery and had some experience with it in the past, it came off as very effective. We actually had two kinds of bows. One was 45 lbs for distant attacks and the other one was 25 lbs in order to be able to pause. While aiming for the mark, you need to pause for a moment, and are the heavy ones necessary? (smiles). During the shoots, when I was required to carry the heavy bow, my arms would tremble, which was not good because it was not JuMong. We had to re-shoot and I eventually got used to its weight.

Q : Blindfolded; you really hit a bulls eye?
A : (looks shy) That was a simple accident.
Q : You were injured in some of your action scenes. Can you elaborate?
A : I had a small wound; I was happy because it was not big and dangerous. There were several instances where I had varied degrees of injury. Once while riding the horse, running the downhill, the horse slid, and I tumbled. My foot was behind the horse. In JuMong, running and horseback riding was a necessity. There was also an occasion where I was stepped on by the horse. It was like dropping your own life. It happened again and good thing, the horse that came after avoided me, so I was safe.
Q : Was there a hardship in the process of making such series like HaeSin and JuMong?
A : Playing the part in HaeSin was easier than the more intense JuMong, especially if you are going to play a part that you are not accustomed to doing. It was difficult.
Q : In order to play the young JuMong, you had to have some hair removal and healing of the moustache?
A : It was also strange because the actress that played my mother should have been older than me, but to tell the truth, she is my age (laughs). I did have to go to a dermatologist for the hair removal and the healing process. We decided to do this to ensure realism in the series. Since the shooting was long, I had to endure the hair removal and healing 3 or 4 times which changed the way my hair grows.

Q : What were the most difficult scenes during shooting?
A : My specialty is to immediately forget that, I have a very optimistic character. The death scene was a bit harsh. We were shooting on location at night in the middle of winter, which was really like hell. And we finished up shooting at approximately 4 in the morning. I felt drowsy, was freezing cold, shivering. I had to wear a lot of clothes. I couldn’t appear as though I was cold, otherwise the shooting wouldn’t be effective. My stylist called it suicide. During summer shooting, I would have to wear three or four kimonos. It was hot; seriously, very hot. But honestly, the scene went well. After finishing a difficult scene, you feel something on your body, you feel exhausted but it really doesn't matter, because what's important is that you have achieved something out of it, you accomplished something with that which you hope will leave a great impression.
Q : What about the actor who played your father?
A : The two actors who played father to me are senior actors who I aspire to emulate.
Q : Did you get a bonus from the management because of JuMong success?
A : (turns red) The staff received the bonus (smiles).
Q : The strong woman who appeared in JuMong as So Seo-No, were you attracted to her?
A : (thinks) The man that you think you are can be attracted to a tough woman.
Q : As for your ideal?
A : Ideal of what? (turns red again)
Q : In the past interview, you said that you were attracted to a woman who treats and respects your mother well?
A : It’s safe answer (laughs). No, I am attracted to kind and lovely women. I also consider intelligent women just like a broadcast writer. Culture is not enough for me, it does not matter to me, but it probably will be (laughs).
Q : You have performed in two period historical dramas, wearing certain types of costumes, how was it?
A : The armor was seriously heavy. We photographed for eight hours, but had to wait our turn to shoot for two hours. Putting on the armor and taking it off took some time, so we were required to wear it longer. The armor weighed about 10kg. We also had to wear a protective neck piece that was very uncomfortable. It was midsummer and you can imagine wearing heavy clothes under the sun. There were times during and after eating, that I wanted to break it (laughs). I hard time wearing it; I had to have assistance and I stayed in the rest room for two hours. The staff had to wait for me, but the two hours that they had to wait for me is not an excuse for everyone. I don’t want people waiting for me.

Q : I hear that you have an interest in photography and videography?
A : Yes. I always purchase the latest technology on the gadgets. I call my personal computer a super computer. I assemble my own pc and I browse the internet for interesting pictures. That was where I began to have an interest in photography. I study pictures by myself. I search for the type of motif for my pictures. My interest grows has grown a small camera to the most upgraded high tech cameras. Presently I use a DSLR, (digital single lens reflex camera).
Q : Are you aware that people say you are mischievous?
A : Do you think so? There are times when I go too far. I like teasing. I am by nature a jolly person. I also cry. My body is big; I’m tall and when I say nothing at all, you have to get ready and be scared (laughs). During shooting, I am chummy; everyone is and it becomes a habit to play.
Q : Did your life change after you finished filming JuMong? Either as an actor or as an ordinary person?
A : (Became shy) My life changed for a while. As a person, your name is known in the world. It is not such a simple thing playing the major part of a well -known hero.
Q : Did you lose your privacy after that?
A : Yes. It’s difficult because I am a curious person. If I like something, I want to shop for awhile, but since I’m recognizable. You cannot hide and people come to you and that's how you lose your privacy. You are responsible for all your actions, you cannot do something people; everyone will find out. It's like their eyes are glued on you all the time. It's quite difficult, though I don't regret anything.
Q : When you finished JuMong, you were considered a national actor. Did this add pressure?
A : Me, a national actor? How? (He turned red up to the ear lobe).
Q : With how you talk, your behavior, attention is being poured all over you?
A : Entering into a new work "Lobbyist” where people will know more of me, it adds pressure. I hope I will be able to meet up to the expectations of me. I can’t always understand what is being said. Even during shooting, many people talk to me, they were shouting and saying a word and my assistant would even tell me I was foolish because I could not understand.
Q : Actual character of Song Il Gook?
A : Speaking for myself, it is not difficult to become the real me. There are times you think you are a different person based on the characters you play...but no, it is not hard to be me.
Q : Do you get special attention from people, for example when you go shopping?
A : There are times when I order a meal, the extent of the meal becomes like a large quantity as if I am greedy (laughs) so that big quantity of food, you think, “How do you eat that?” and people nearby will look at you and you cannot just eat.
Q : Do you drink liquor?
A : I am not a big drinker. There are times that I am invited out for a drink, at least around once or twice a year. With my manager, it’s about two times in a month, but that sometimes we have to cancel due to busy schedules. It’s an excuse. Even now, he has that kind of lame excuse (the manager burst into laughter). If you become careless, you view yourself in the mirror, and you will get fat.
Q : You are prone to getting fat easily, but haven’t you have done soma type maintenance?
A : I love meat...but in order to have a good build, you have to eliminate that.
Q : You are a sports buff and proud to be, but...
A : Honestly I am not particularly proud of it...other than skiing. I grow tired. I like inline skating and mountain biking, motorcycling and more. I have tried various types of sports. I run, though a full course is unusual; I appeared in the marathon conference, and I can say that I am not the best one.
Q : In Korea, you are always being watched, your actions are being well taken care of?
A : When I was small, playing with whatever and whoever did not matter. My mother always told me that when I am outside the house, I have to pay attention to my behavior, and to always be humble. That is how we were brought up.
Q : Was it possible for you to be bad during childhood?
A : I am placid...I did not study well..(laughs).
Q : In the future, how would you like to be remembered as a performer?
A : (Thinks for a while) I would like to be remembered as a respectable performer.
