1994 yilinda yapilmaya baslayan Seongsan Gündogumu Festivali, Jeju Adasi’nin en yüksek yeri olan ve diger adi “Sunrise Peak” olan Seongsan Ilchulong’da düzenlenir. Burasi, Jeju Adasi’nda günesin dogusunu izlendigi en meshur yerdir ve yil boyunca kalabalik turist guruplarinin ilgisini çekmektedir. Bununla beraber burasi, 31 Aralik, 1 ve 2 Ocakta düzenlenen Yeni Yil Arifesi’nde özellikle yogun ilgi görür. Geçen yilin üzerinde düsünerek ve gelecek yil için dilekte bulunarak yeni yilin ilk gündogumunu görmeye gelen turistleri çesitli festival programlari beklemektedir.
Festival Hakkinda Genel Bilgi
31 Aralikta saat gece yarisina dogru ilerlerken insanlar, Seongsan Sunrise Peak (Gündogumu Tepesi)’da kurulan sahnenin etrafinda geri sayima baslar. Yeni Yil kutlamalarinda mesale gösterisi yapilir, kamp atesi yakilir ve havai fisekler atilir. Gut denilen geleneksel samanik bir ritüel, diger muhtesem performanslar ile birlikte sahnelenir. Ayrica ünlü vokalistler ve göstericiler bir açik hava konseri yaparlar. Ana etkinlik 1 Ocakta baslar. Yeni Yili kutlamak için her limanda balikçilar, teknelerinin isiklarini açar ve hep birlikte uyum içinde gemilerin düdüklerini çalarlar. Ayrica ziyaretçiler bir tiyatro oyunu, orkestra ve caz gösterisi ile eglenirken, günesin dogusula birlikte altin bir kurdele kesilir. Gündogumuna karsi, ziyaretçilerin eglenmesi için bir Yeni Yil konseri düzenlenir. Diger etkinlikler ise atli polislerin geçis töreni, bir pungmul (Kore gelenksel müzigi esliginde dans) gösterisi, mandalina ve portakal yeme yarismasi,, sicak ve lezzetli yemeklerin sunuldugu yemek pazaridir.
Festivalde Yapilmasi Gerekenler
Seongsan Sunrise Peak’in çok rüzgarli olmasi nedeniyle ziyaretçilere sicak tutan giysiler giymesi tavsiye edilir. Yaniniza bir termos sicak çay ve kahve alirsaniz festival daha eglenceli olacaktir. Festivalde eglenmenin en iyi yolu, yakinlardaki bir otelde kalmak, Yeni Yil Gecesi aksam seremonisine katilmak ve 1 Ocakta günesin dogusunu izlemeden önce otelde biraz dinlenmektir. Yeni Yil Gecesi’nde, katilimcilarin el ele tutusup bir dilek dileyerek büyük bir halka içinde oynadigi, Kore geleneksel oyunu olan Ganggangsullae (halka dansi) yapilacaktir. Bir pungmul gurubunun gösterisi, sicak bir ortam saglayacaktir.

Introduction
Launched in 1994, the Seongsan Sunrise Festival is held on top of Jeju Island’s Seongsan Ilchulbong or “Sunrise Peak.” The site is the most famous place for seeing the sunrise on Jeju Island and attracts a large crowd of tourists throughout the year. However, the place is especially busy on New Year’s Eve when the festival (on December 31, January 1, and 2) is held. A variety of festival programs awaits them for tourists who come to see the first sunrise to reflect on the past year and make wishes for the coming year.
Festival Overview
As the clock ticks its way towards midnight on December 31, people start the countdown around the performance stage, which is set up at Seongsan Sunrise Peak. In celebration of the New Year, there is a torchlight show, a campfire and fireworks. A traditional shamanic ritual called gut is performed along with other fascinating performances. Also, famous vocalists and entertainers perform during an outdoor concert.
The main event starts on January 1. In every port, fishermen turn on their boat lights and sound their whistles in unison to celebrate the New Year. Also, as the sun rises, a golden tape is cut, while visitors are entertained with a theatrical play, band and jazz performances. Against the backdrop of the sunrise, a New Year’s concert is held for the pleasure of the visitors. Other events include a mounted police parade, a pungmul performance, a mandarin orange eating contest, and a food market serving hot and tasty foods.
Festival Highlight
The site of Seongsan Sunrise Peak is particularly windy, so visitors are advised to wear warm clothes. The festival experience will be more enjoyable if you take a hot thermos of coffee or warm tea. The best way to enjoy the festival is to stay in a nearby hotel, visit the evening ceremony on New Year’s Eve, and take a short rest at the hotel before seeing the sunrise on January 1.
On New Year’s Eve, there will be a Korean traditional game of Ganggangsullae, in which participants hold hands and move in a large circle as they make a wish. A performance by a pungmul band will add to the friendly ambience.

From Jeju International Airport, take bus 100 to Jeju Intercity Bus Terminal.
From Jeju Intercity Bus Terminal, take an intercity bus bound for Ilju Road (East).
Get off at the entrance of Seongsan Ilchulbong.
