1971 -- A fire at Seoul's Daeyeongak Hotel kills 166 people and injures 88 others.


1978 -- Football player Cha Bum-kun becomes the first South Korean to join the Bundesliga in Germany.


1997 -- President-elect Kim Dae-jung names Lee Jong-chan, vice chairman of the National Congress for New Politics, as the head of a committee to take over power from the Kim Young-sam government.


2002 -- South and North Korea hold working-level talks to discuss cooperation on maritime affairs.


2006 -- South Korea selects two finalists to become the country's first astronaut. Ko san, a researcher at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, was selected over Yi So-yeon in September 2007. Ko was later replaced by Yi due to violations of training protocol.

1948 -- USSR forces complete withdrawal from North Korea.


1962 -- South Korea makes public a fifth amendment to its Constitution, which stipulates rules governing the presidency and creates a unicameral legislature.


1974 -- The Dong-A Ilbo, a daily newspaper, begins to suffer from a lack of advertising money as it comes under pressure from Seoul's authoritative regime. The pressure continues for seven months.


1980 -- South Korea's national security legislation council, which was formed by a military regime founded after a coup, passes a media control law.


1996 -- The ruling New Korea Party passes 11 revision bills, including several addressing the controversial National Security and Labor laws, in seven minutes without the presence of opposition parties.

1908 -- After colonizing the Korean Peninsula in 1905, the Japanese colonial government establishes the Oriental Development Company in Seoul as an economic base to control Korea's land and business. Japan forced Korea to transfer the ownership of some state land to the company on the pretext of modernizing agriculture, and the Japanese company lent money to Korean farmers at high interest rates, controlling nearly a third of the cultivated land on the peninsula within 20 years.


1926 -- Independence fighter Na Seok-ju shoots himself to death after throwing bombs into a Japanese-owned bank and the Oriental Development Company in Seoul. Born in Jaeryong, Hwanghae Province, now in North Korea, in 1892, Na left for northeast China at age 23 for military training and joined the Korean exile government in Shanghai as a fund collector and security guard.


1989 -- South Korea establishes diplomatic relations with Yugoslavia.


1991 -- North Korea declares its northeastern maritime cities of Rajin and Sonbong as "free economic zones" ready to provide benefits to foreign investors in an effort to enliven the country's faltering economy.


2000 -- South Korea and the United States complete a revised Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), which expanded South Korean jurisdiction over U.S. military suspects and set legal grounds for environmental protection on U.S. military bases.

The agreement, made after five years of negotiations, came amid growing public antagonism toward the U.S. after a bombing incident in Maehyang-ri, the pollution of the Han River by a U.S. base and the revelation that U.S. soldiers had killed hundreds of Korean civilians during the Korean War.

The revision called for the handover of U.S. soldiers accused of murder, rape or 10 other serious crimes to South Korean authorities at the time of their indictment.

1970 -- Korea Telecom launches direct distance dialing nationwide, enabling customers to make long-distance calls without the assistance of an operator.


1990 -- Former President Chun Doo-hwan returns to his home in Seoul from Baekdam Temple in Gangwon Province, where he and his wife Lee Soon-ja confined themselves from November 1988 through December 1990 to escape public criticism of his involvement in the 1980 Gwangju massacre and irregularities during his term. Chun served as president until February 1988 after rising to power in 1980 through a 1979 coup.


1994 -- Bobby Hall, a South Korea-based U.S. Air Force pilot, returns to Seoul via the truce village of Panmunjom after making a forced landing in North Korea and being detained for 13 days.


1998 -- The National Assembly passes a bill calling for the lowering of the retirement age for teachers to 62 from 65.


2002 -- The government designates the inner port of Incheon as a duty-free area.


2005 -- The National Assembly approves the government's plan to reduce the number of South Korea's 3,200 troops in Iraq by one-third but extend their deployment until the end of the following year.

2007 -- President Roh Moo-hyun pardons Daewoo Group founder Kim Woo-choong and 74 convicted businesspeople, politicians, government officials and others in a year-end amnesty. Six death row inmates whose sentences were commuted to life imprisonment were also included in the special pardon.
