A Royal Night Out at Gyeongbok

The National Palace Museum of Korea will also stay open until 10 p.m. featuring displays of artifacts.

Gyeongbok Palace is once again opening its doors at night so that Koreans and tourists can enjoy the Joseon Dynasty royal palace without suffering from the scorching sun.

It will be the first time this summer that the palace will be open to the public at night.

From July 30 to Aug. 11, the palace will admit up to 1,500 visitors per night between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. and will stay open until 10 p.m.

The limited number of tickets, which cost 3,000 won ($2.95), can be bought online starting July 23 at 2 p.m. or at the door. There is a limit of two tickets per purchase. Tickets for the palace can be purchased at ticket.auction.co.kr.

To encourage visitors to learn more about Korea’s royal culture, the National Palace Museum of Korea will also stay open until 10 p.m., featuring displays of artifacts from the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).

The Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea is also recruiting volunteers to work from July 1 to 20, patrolling the palace grounds during the night. To volunteer at the palace, interested parties can apply at www.royalpalace.co.kr.

W Korea Dergisi Kyuhyun Röportajı

Müzikal alanında hiç sunbae'n olmadığı için üzgün olduğunu söylemiştin. Ama bana göre bir grup tecrübesiz aktörün arasından parlama şansı da olabilir?

Kyuhyun: Baekhyun sahneye temmuzda çıkacak, yani onun performansını henüz görmedim. Jay hyung’un performansını izledim. Kyuhyun: Ay, ben sunbaelik yapamam. Hala üzgün olduğum kısım bu.

Kyuhyun: …Hiçbir zaman şirkete gidip de ne yapmak istediğimi söylemedim. Eğer şirket, “Şunu denemek istiyor musun?” diye sorarsa, elime geçen hiçbir şansı reddetmem ama sadece daha fazlasını yapmak istediğimi söylerim. Ve en çok yapmak istediğimse şarkı söylemek, özellikle ballad. Bu şirkete ilk geldiğimde, idol olabileceğimi bilmiyordum. O zamana kadar bizim konserlerimizin en eğlenceli konserler olduğunu düşünürdüm ama öyle değilmiş. (gülüyor) Bütün bir spor stadyumunu tek başına doldurabilen bir şarkıcı olmak istiyorum.

Müzikal oyuncusu olmak konusunda ne düşünüyorsun?

Kyuhyun: Sahnede olmaktan keyif alan bir oyuncu? Ama bu hala çok uzaklarda. Bunu elde edebilmek için Nam Gyung Joo öğretmenin seviyesine ulaşmam gerek bence.

Nefret dolu negatif yorumları arayıp okur musun?

Kyuhyun: Öyle sitelere girip lanetleri okuduğumda ve yaralandığımda iyileşmek için hayranlarımızın sitelerine gidiyorum. (gülüyor) Negatif yorumları başka bir ilgi türü olarak görüyorum. Elbette nereye giderseniz gidin olumsuz yorumlar almak zor olurdu. (gülüyor)

You say that you are sad that there aren’t any musical sunbaes. But I would think that it would also be a chance to shine from group of inexperienced actors?

Kyuhyun: Baekhyun will go on stage in July, so I haven’t seen his performance yet. I have watched Jay hyung’s performance. Jay hyung and I are, both bad at dancing so (we were) good models (for each other) during the practice. We watched each other, and thought ‘Ah, I at least should not do it that way~’ (laugh). Of course, we practiced for 3 months so it’s a lot better now. But because it’s a performance with rain falling the entire time, the floor is waterproofed, so it’s very slippery. I worry that audience would think that the dances are sloppy.

Do you have your own interpretation of Lockwood character, apart from how the other two of the triple casting interpret him?

Kyuhyun: Jay hyung is pursuing serious and cool character, so his path is very different from mine. I try to add comical factors to make it funny. I try to show the two sides of the character; a character that is a top star on the outside, but full of faults in the inside like a normal person.

Baekhyunnie must be very tense right now?

Kyuhyun: Baekhyunnie…. is in trouble (laugh). To be honest, there really wasn’t much time to practice, and he’s the first EXO member to do a musical, but he didn’t seem to feel any responsibility/pressure, so I gave him some. ‘You’re going to be in trouble if you continue that way’ (laugh). After that, Baekhyunnie practiced hard. He worried a lot at first, but he saw Jay hyung’s and my run, and said he’ll be able to do it.

You said you’re sad that there isn’t a sunbae at the location, but you seem to be the one doing the sunbae role?

Kyuhyun: Ai, I cannot do that. It’s still a part I’m sad about.

Kyuhyun: … I haven’t ever gone to the company first and tell them what I wanted to do. If the company asked “You want to try this?” I didn’t reject any chances I got, but just told them I wanted to do more. And what I want to do most is singing, especially ballad. When I first came in this company, I didn’t know I would become an idol. Lee Soo Man teacher said “Let’s do well” so I wondered ‘do what well?’ and I became Super Junior (laugh). At first, I was surprised; now I am thankful. While doing activities, I was able to experience things that I was never able to imagine. I was able to perform concerts overseas in large scale stages, experience passionate fandom, and was able to have many precious memories. My dream is to continue to be Super Junior, and also do music I want to do.

Do you also imagine how it will be in the future?

Kyuhyun: Since I like ballad, I listen to it a lot, and go to many concerts. Last year, I went to Sung SiKyung hyung’s concert with Eunhyuk-ee hyung and Siwon-ee hyung. Till then, I thought our concerts were the most fun, but it wasn’t. (Laugh). I want to become a singer that can fill the entire gymnastic stadium alone.

How about as a musical actor?

Kyuhyun: Actor that can enjoy the stage? But it’s still very far away. I think I’d have to be Nam GyungJoo teacher’s level to possibly achieve that.


You search and read hateful/negative comments?

Kyuhyun: When I go to sites like that and read curses and receive wounds, I can just go to our fansites to receive healing (laugh). I think of negative comments as another type of interest. They are saying something because they have some interest. Sometimes, there are people that are cynical about your existence itself, and curse at you but I don’t pay them any attention. It’s not that I have a steel mentality but that I look at the comments while I keep in mind that each individuals think and feel differently. I’m able to have this attitude because there are fans who love me regardless of what I do. Because there are people who love you, you can believe them and become strong. Of course, it would be hard if there are negative comments no matter where you go (laugh).

Summer Trend Forecast: Raincoats

Yağmur botları birkaç yıl önce piyasaya sürüldüğünde çoğu insan dikkate almadı. Ama ayakkabı piyasası, çocukluklarında çamurlara basarak gezen nostaljik resimleri yayarak kadınları anında fethetti. Lastik botlarla beraber, deri ayakkabıları mahvedeceğim diye endişelenmeye gerek kalmadı. Artı, ayakları kuru tutarak insanlara gidip bir çift almaları için bahane veriyor. Yağmur botları, yaz mevsimi ihtiyaçlarından biri haline geldiğinden yağmurluklar da yağmur sezonu için sıradaki büyük ihtiyaç haline gelecek gibi duruyor. Lastik botlarda olduğu gibi birkaç yıl önceye kadar yağmurluklar da çocuk ürünü olarak görülüyordu ama gün geçtikçe daha fazla moda markası hem kadınlar hem erkekler için su geçirmez ürünler piyasaya sürüyor son günlerde.

Şemsiye ve su geçirmez ceket üretip satan Has şirketi, pazarlama bölümü başkanı Bang Won Hyung: “Bu sene hem satışlardaki hem de üretimdeki artış, yağmurluk satmaya başladığımız seneye göre iki katından daha fazla oranda fırladı.” dedi. Şirket Ağustos 2007’den beri yağmurluk üretiyor. Bang: “İnsanlar yağmurluk alma fikrine daha açıklar, belki de mevsimler çok fazla değiştiği içindir ve önceye göre insanlar kamp yapmaktan öncekine göre daha fazla hoşlanıyorlar.” diye ekledi.

Yaz mevsimi eskiden olduğu gibi değil artık. Asıl yağmur sezonu Haziran’ın sonundan Temmuz’un ortalarına kadar sürerdi ama Kore Meteoroloji Bakanlığı bu tahminleri yapmayı beş yıl önce bıraktı. Kore Meteoroloji Bakanlığı tahminlerin durdurulmasını şöyle açıkladı: “Küresel ısınma muson(yağmur) sezonu için tahmin yapmayı imkansız hale getirdi.”

Bir çok giyim markası arasından, dış giyim markaları yağmurluk pazarlamasına daha çok eğilmiş durumda. Bu markaların çoğunun en az bir ya da iki yağmurluk çeşidi var.



İki çocuk annesi Kim, iş yerine giderken her sabah çocuklarını yol üstündeki kreşe bırakmak zorunda ama yağmurlu günler her zaman bu rutini karmaşık hale getiriyor.

When rain boots rolled out on to the market years ago, most people didn’t take them seriously. But the footwear instantly captivated women by conjuring up nostalgic images of stomping around in puddles during childhood. With rubber boots, there’s no need to worry about ruining leather shoes. Plus, they keep feet dry, giving people the perfect excuse to go out and grab a pair. Because rain boots are becoming a summer necessity, it seems that raincoats are now emerging as the next big thing for monsoon season. As is the case with rubber boots, raincoats were considered items for little kids until a few years ago, but more fashion brands are launching waterproof items for men and women these days.

“Both sales and production have jumped more than twofold this year compared to the first year we began to sell raincoats,” said Bang Won-hyung, the head of the marketing team at Has, a company that retails umbrellas and waterproof jackets. The company has been selling raincoats since August 2007. “I think people are more open to raincoats maybe because the weather has changed a lot, and they also enjoy camping more than ever before,” Bang added.

The summer weather is not what it used to be. The official monsoon season used to fall between late June and mid-July, but the Korea Meteorological Administration stopped forecasting it five years ago. The primary reason for the stoppage is because “global warming made it impossible to forecast the weather for the monsoon season,” according to the KMA.

Of the many clothing companies, outdoor brands are most keen on marketing raincoats. Almost all of these brands have at least one or two raincoats.

Kim, a mother of two boys, has to walk her children to a day-care center every morning on her way to the office, but wet days always make her routine chaotic.

“Holding an umbrella with one hand and holding the hands of the two boys with the other is a nearly impossible mission,” said 34-year-old Kim. “But I got to know that many raincoats come with cute and pretty patterns,” said Kim. “So I bought one that hits above my knee. It makes my rainy days a lot easier.”

She is asking her boyfriend why he has changed from the beginning of the relationship until now. The guy says ‘no, nothing has changed I still think about you.’ “시간을 거슬러 (time passes” is about a time when there was a lady in his life, and now he wonders how she’s doing.

A New Twist on the Sweet Tastes of Summer

Yazın Şekerli Tatlılarında Yeni Bir Dönüş

Kalori hesaplayanlar için Patbingsu (geleneksel bir Kore tatlısı) tam bir bombadır. Bu geleneksel yaz tehditi -iki ya da üç porsiyon rendelenmiş buz parçalarının üstünde haşlanmış adzuki bezelyeleri, meyve ve dondurma karıştırılmış halde- genelde 4000 kaloridir ve bu bir insanın günlük alması gereken 2500 kalorinin çok çok üstündedir.

Ama sağlık düşkünü Korelilerin çoğu bu mevsim tatlısı söz konusu olduğunda oldukça cömerttir ve patbingsu, diğer bir deyişle bingsu (rendelenmiş buz) her sene akla gelmeyecek süsleme ve malzemelerle güçlü bir şekilde geri dönüyor.

Ve bu yazın da bir farkı yok. Kafeler, restoranlar ve hatta beş yıldızlı oteller bile sürekli birbirleriyle yarışarak diğer orijinal karışımlar gibi en iyi bingsuyu ortaya çıkarmaya çalışıyor.

Beş Yıldızlı Otellerde Bingsu

Patbingsu zamanında ucuz ve değersiz bir yaz lezzeti olarak görülüyordu ama son zamanlardaki gelişmelerle birlikte yapışkan, plastik masalar ve kaygan kaşıklardan beş yıldızlı otel salonlarına taşındı.

Bir çok otel arasından Seoul’ün güneyinde Daechidong’da yer alan Park Hyatt Seoul, mönüsüne özel bingsu seçenekleri ekleyen ilk otel oldu. Bu sırada diğer oteller de değişik tarzlarda patbingsu yemek isteyenler için de cazip seçenekler sundu.

W Seoul Walkerhill bingsuyu klasik, tropikal ve hatta şarap tatları da içinde olmakla birlikte yedi değişik şekilde sunuyor. Hotel Shilla Seoul’un elma mangolu bingsusu da çok satanlar arasında. Jeju adasında yetişen elma mangolarıyla yapılan bingsunun değeri ise 41,999 won (yaklaşık 100 Türk Lirası).

Acai Kasesi

Patbingsu yerken suçlu hissediyorsanız, acai kasesi daha sağlıklı bir ürün olarak gösteriliyor. Acai böğürtleni püresi tatlının en altında yer alırken tatlının üst tarafı muz ve üzümlerden böğürtlen, çilek ve ejderha meyvesine kadar karışık meyvelerden oluşuyor.

Acai kasesi ilk olarak Hawai’de ilgi topladı ve şimdi Güney Seoul’de Nonhyeondong’da Boto Acai Cafe’de sunuluyor.

Küçük porsiyon 5,500 won (yaklaşık 11 Türk Lirası), orta boy porsiyon 7,500 won (yaklaşık 15 Türk Lirası) ve büyük porsiyon 12,500 won (yaklaşık 25 Türk Lirası).



Makaron Dondurma

Makaron dondurma bugünlerde Seoul’de büyük ihtimalle en popüler tatlılardan biri. İki ince makaronun arasında dondurma sandviçi şeklindeki tatlının tadı için müşteriler açılıştan saatler önce Penguin Macaron’un önünde sıra oluşturuyor.

Her bir makaron dondurma 2,900 won (yaklaşık 6 Türk Lirası) değerinde.



Ananaslı Bingsu

Klasik bingsu seçenekleri denizinde genellikle meyve ve haşlanmış adzuki bezelyeleriyle süslenmiş yeni kesilmiş meyve yığınıyla servis edilen kavunlu bingsu dik duruyor. Bu tatlının başarısı anlıktı ve yaklaşık 1-2 yıl önce yazın esaslarından biri haline geldi. Ama bu sezonda, kavunlu bingsu yerini daha yenilikçi; ananas parçacıklarının daha alt tarafında yoğunlaştırılmış süt ve rendelenmiş buzla birlikte lifli yarım deniz kabuğunda servis edildiği ananaslı bingsuya bırakıyor.

Ananaslı bingsu Güney Seoul’de, Yeoksamdong’da yer alan New Kopi Coffee’nin mönüsünde bulunuyor. Kafe sahibine göre her gün sadece 20 adet ananaslı bingsu çıkarılıyor, yani sabah erken saatlerde yetişip almak şart.

Bu popüler tatlı 17,000 won (yaklaşık 34 Türk Lirası) değerinde.



Tahıllı Dondurma

Bulgurun ana malzeme olduğu bu tatlıda Sobok dondurması süt yerine tahıllarla yapılıyor. Yapay tatlandırıcı ve katkı maddesinin kullanılmadığı tatlı; kuru karadeniz hurması (Türkiye’de, Karadeniz’de yetiştiği için böyle adlandırılan bir hurma çeşidi), tatlı kabak küpleri ve pirinç şurubu ile birlikte servis ediliyor.

Dondurma ortaklığı Seoul’ün merkezinde, Sangsudong’da yer alıyor. Tahıllı dondurmanın değeri 5,200 won (yaklaşık 10 Türk Lirası 50 Kuruş).

For those counting calories, patbingsu is a bomb. This traditional summer treat - two or three servings of shaved iced flakes topped with assorted garnishes like boiled adzuki beans, fruit and ice cream - often exceeds 4,000 calories, far higher than the recommended daily caloric intake for an average man at about 2,500.

But many health-conscious Koreans are generous when it comes to this seasonal dessert, and each year, patbingsu, also called bingsu (shaved ice), comes back strong with all imaginable toppings and ingredients.

And this summer is no exception. Cafes, restaurants and even five-star hotels appear to be competing with each other over the best bingsu as well as other original confections.

Bingsu at Five-Star Hotels

Patbingsu was once considered a cheap and junky summer treat, but the dessert has moved up in recent years from establishments with sticky, plastic tables and greasy spoons to five-star hotel lounges.

Of many hotels, Park Hyatt Seoul, located in Daechidong, southern Seoul, was the first hotel to launch premium bingsu selections. Meanwhile, other hotels also offer fancier options for those who want to eat patbingsu in style.

W Seoul Walkerhill Hotel’s bingsu is available in seven varieties, including classic, tropical and even wine flavored. Apple mango binsu from the Hotel Shilla Seoul is another steady-seller. The bingsu there is made with apple mangos, grown on Jeju Island, and goes for 41,999 won.

Acai Bowl

If you feel guilty about eating patbingsu, the Acai Bowl is highly recommended as a healthier substitute.

An Acai berry puree serves as the base of the dessert, which is topped with assorted fruit, from bananas and grapes to berries and dragon fruit.

The Acai Bowl first gained recognition in Hawaii and now it is available in Seoul at Boto Acai Cafe, located in Nonhyeon-dong, southern Seoul.

A small goes for 5,500 won, a medium for 7,500 won and a large is 12,500 won.



Macaron Ice Cream

Macaron ice cream is probably the hottest dessert available in Seoul these days. For a taste of this popular treat of ice cream sandwiched between two thin macarons, customers begin to line up even before the doors open at Penguin Macaron.

Each macaron ice cream costs 2,900 won.



Pineapple Bingsu

Among a sea of classic bingsu selections usually topped with fruit and boiled adzuki beans, melon bingsu stands tall, served with a stack of freshly cut fruits. Its success was instant, and over the past year or two it has become somewhat of a summer staple. But this season, melon bingsu is likely to give way to the more innovative pineapple bingsu, in which pieces of pineapple are piled up inside the half-cut fibrous shell, with shaved ice and condensed milk further down.

Pineapple bingsu is available at New Kopi Coffee, located in Yeoksam-dong, southern Seoul. According to the cafe, just 20 pineapple bingsu are available each day, so getting in early is a must.

This trendy dessert costs 17,000 won.



Grain Ice Cream

With brown rice as its main ingredient, ice cream from Sobok is made with grains instead of milk. Free of artificial flavors and additives, the treat is served with dried persimmon, sweet pumpkin cubes and rice syrup.

The ice cream joint is located in Sangsu-dong, central Seoul. Grain ice cream is 5,200 won.
