Hongneung Arboretum, located in Cheongnyangni-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, is the first of its kind in Korea, formed when the Forestry Experiment Station was opened on the site in 1922. It has been named "Hongreung Arboretum" because "Hongreung," the tomb of Empress Myeongseong (the wife of king Gojong), was placed there in 1897. However, the tomb has since been relocated and now the area it houses only a marker stone that indicates that there was once a royal grave on the site.
The arboretum covers and area of 440,000 sq. meters. It was originally divided into various gardens including willows garden, alder trees garden, alpine plants garden, shrubbery garden, and medicinal plants garden. The botanical specimens collected throughout Korea through 1948 reached about 300,000 samples of about 4,000 species. However most of them were destroyed during the Korean War. At present, it has about 20,000 specimens of 157 families and 2,035 species (except for native plants of North Korea) and also has a specimen collection of 4,245 species including pressed leaves.
