In the very heart of downtown Seoul, there is a temple where one can have a warm cup of tea, experience an easy-going silence, and take a quiet walk. Gilsangsa is located in Seongbuk-dong, along the quiet residential streets lined with mansions. Gilsangsa is known as a temple that is situated in the middle of secular society but not tainted by it. The temple may look somewhat incongruous surrounded by the upscale mansions in the neighborhood. As soon as you enter the One Pillar Gate (Iljumun), however, the tranquility of a deep mountain temple welcomes you. Founded in 1997, Gilsangsa is located in Seongbuk-gu District of northern Seoul. In the center of the temple lies the Hall of Ultimate Bliss (Geukrakjeon), and a thickly forested valley is next to it. There are benches along the valley where you can take a short rest and enjoy a cup of tea. The temple used to be one of the three most fancy restaurants in Korea called Daewongak. The owner of the restaurant, Gilsanghwa Bosal (female lay devotee) donated the huge property to the Venerable Beopjeong Sunim. This area totals about 7,000 pyeong (about 5.7 acres) and includes more than 40 buildings, whose estimated value is over 100 billion Won (over one hundred million USD). Thanks to her generosity, Gilsangsa was founded.
One of the temple’s special features is the Gilsang Seonwon (Zen Center) dedicated to meditation practice. There is another hall called the House of Silence, which is a meditation room for those who wish to experience Seon practice. It is open daily to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you wish to encounter your inner self even for a few minutes a week, or for a few hours a month, the House of Silence at Gilsangsa is just the right place. The temple has a teahouse called the Joy of Sharing, which has its own charm as well. You can indulge in traditional tea while sitting here and soaking up the sunlight. It is also fascinating to see the bamboo leaves blowing gently in the wind, making shadows on the wall of the teahouse.
Due to these unique features, Gilsangsa attracts many people and makes them visit again. Just like the pure and fragrant image of the Venerable Beopjeong Sunim, the temple is well known for its open and transparent management run by the monks and laypeople together. Moreover, it established a branch temple in France, which provides a practicing ground for Korean students abroad to cultivate their faith mind. The branch is also becoming a center for spreading Korean Buddhism to Europeans.
