Ganghwa’daki Bomunsa Taş Heykeli
Bir zamanlar Ganghwa’da çalışkan bir balıkçı yaşardı. Bir gün, her zamanki gibi balık tutarken garip şekilli 21 kaya yakaladı. Balıkçı kendi kendine “Bugün kötü şans var. Hiç balık yok. Sadece işe yaramaz kayalar.” deyip kayaları suya attı. Aynı şeyler ertesi gün, sonraki gün yine oldu. Üçüncü günün gecesinde Buddha rüyasına girdi ve dedi:
“Attıkların sıradan kayalar değil. Onlara iyi bakarsan sana iyi şans getirecekler.”
Balıkçı rüyadan uyandı ve attığı kayaları sudan geri aldı. Onları şimdiki Bomunsa’ya yerleştirdi. Bunun ardından balıkçıya çok büyük bir talih kondu. Bomunsa’da balıkçının deniz tabanından geri aldığı kayaların bulunduğu bir kaya rafı vardır. Kayalar, Buddha’nın öğrencilerinin şeklindedir.
Tapınağın inşasından sonra 30 kadar kişi tapınakta yaşadı. Yıllardan birinde dışarıyla temas kurulamayacak kadar çok kar vardı. En yakın köy 1,6 mil uzaktaydı. Ağır kar altında oraya varmak imkansızdı. Tapınakta pek fazla yiyecek kalmamıştı. Daha da kötüsü, ateşleri söndü. Şimdi yiyeceklerini pişirecekleri ateşleri de yoktu. Ne yapacaklarını, ateşi tekrar nasıl yakacaklarını tartışmaya başladılar.
Sonra birdenbire ateş kendiliğinden yanmaya başladı. Kış boyu o ateşle ısındılar. Karlar eridikten sonra, baş keşiş kasabaya indi. Keşiş orada onu çok katı kalpli gören bir tanıdığıyla karşılaştı. Tanıdığı dedi:
“Nasıl olur da, küçücük bir çocuğu kış ortasında kasabaya gönderip ateş getirmesini isteyebildin? Ona acıdım, onu besledim ve ona ateş verdim.”
Keşiş utandı. Ancak eline bir but alıp çabucak tapınağa döndü. Kayalarla dolu taş odadan içeri baktığında, dudağında yemek kırıntıları olan Buddha’nın öğrencilerinden birinin heykelini gördü. Keşiş o günden sonra oradaki kayalara değer verdi ve bu mucizevî haber insanlar arasında hızla yayıldığından tapınak büyüdü.

The Stone Statue in Bomunsa in Ganghwa
There once lived an industrious fisherman in Ganghwa. One day, he was fishing on the sea as usual, and got 21 rocks in strange shapes. The fisherman said to himself, 'Bad luck for today. Not one fish, only useless rocks,' and threw them back into the water. However, things were the same the next day and the day after next. On the night of the third day, Buddha appeared in his dream and said,
"What you threw away are not ordinary rocks. They will bring you good luck when you take good care of them."
The fisherman awoke from his dream, retrieved the rocks from the water, and placed them where Bomunsa is now. The fisherman came into a big forfune after that. There in Bomunsa is a stone room with stone roof, where the rocks the fisherman retrieved from the sea sit. The rocks were in the shape of Buddha's disciples.
After the temple was built, about 30 people lived in the temple. One year, there was much snow and contact with the outside became impossible. The nearest village was over 1.6miles away, and there was no way to get through the heavy snow. There was not much food left in the temple. To make matters worse, the pyrolight went out. Now they were in trouble with no pyrolight. There was no way to cook what little food they got, and they were all concerned, and deliberated how to start the fire.
Then suddenly, the fire started of itself, and they managed to live through the winter. After the snow thawed, the head monk of the temple went down to the village. He met an old acquaintance, who blamed him for his cold-heartedness.
He said,
"How could you send down a barefoot kid for pyrolight in the middle of the snow? I felt so sorry for the kid that I fed him some red-bean porridge and gave him the pyrolight."
The head monk was embarrassed but had a haunch, and hurried back to the temple. When he looked into the stone room where the rocks were, there on the lips of one of the Buddha's disciples was the bits of red-bean porridge. The monk treasured the rocks, and since then the temple prospered because the news of the miracle rapidly spread among people.
