Artist Lee Bul returns to Venice with monument symbolizing DMZ

Sanatçı Lee Bul, DMZ'yi Simgeleyen Anıtla Venedik'e Geri Döndü

Güney Koreli sanatçı Lee Bul, bu yıl Kore Yarımadası'nın trajik durumunu simgeleyen yeni bir eserle Venedik Bienali'ne geri döndü.

"Aubade V", Arsenal'in ana sergi mekanında perşembe günü  "İlginç Zamanlarda Yaşayabilir" başlıklı 2019 Venedik Bienali'nde gösterildi. Sanat bienali  Cumartesi günü başladı ve Kasım ayına kadar sürecek.

Eser dört metre yüksekliğinde ve Kuzey ve Güney Kore arasında yer alan askerden arındırılmış bölgeden (DMZ) eski bir koruma direğinden tel çit içeriyor. DMZ güvenlik görevlileri, geçtiğimiz yıl Koreliler arasındaki askeri bir anlaşmanın ardından alındı.

Şafakta birbirinden ayrılan aşıkların bir şarkısı olan "Aubade" dizisinin beşincisi ve bölünmüş yarımadaya veda ediyor gibi görünüyor.

Ancak 55 yaşındaki sanatçı, siyasi ideolojilerin çatışmasının egemen olduğu geçmişi aşmak istediğini söyledi. Kore Yarımadası'nın bölünmesi trajik geçmişinin bir sonucudur.

Toplumun sözleşmelerine ve klişelerine uzun süredir meydan okuyan Lee, "Çalışma bölünmeye elveda demiyor, ancak ideolojilerin ötesine geçme hareketini sembolize ediyor" dedi.

Ayrıca Venedik'te "Dil Ölçeği" başlıklı bir heykel de dahil olmak üzere iki eser daha sergiliyor.

Lee, Bienal'deki ana sergiye ikinci kez katıldı. 1999'da hem Kore Köşkün'de hem de uluslararası sergiye yaptığı katkılardan dolayı onurlu bir ödül aldı.

South Korean artist Lee Bul has returned to the Venice Biennale this year with a new artwork that symbolizes the tragic situation of the Korean Peninsula.

"Aubade V" was unveiled at the main exhibition venue of the Arsenale at the 2019 Venice Biennale titled "May You Live in Interesting Times" on Thursday (local time). The art biennial officially kicks off on Saturday and runs through November.

The installation is four meters high and includes wire fencing from an old guard post from the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that lies between North and South Korea. The DMZ guard posts were taken down following a military agreement between the two Koreas last year.

It is the fifth of her "Aubade" series, a song of lovers separating at dawn, and seems to bid farewell to the divided peninsula.

But the 55-year-old artist said she wants to surpass the past, which was dominated by clashes of political ideologies. The division of the Korean Peninsula is a consequence of its tragic past.

"The work doesn't say goodbye to the division, but symbolizes the movement of going beyond the ideologies," said Lee, who has long challenged society's conventions and stereotypes.

She is also displaying two other works, including a sculpture titled "Scale of Tongue," in Venice.

It is the second time that Lee has participated in the main exhibition at the Biennale. In 1999, she was awarded an honorable mention for her contribution to both the Korean Pavilion and the international exhibition.

20th Jeonju Int'l Film Festival closes with record numbers

Güney Kore'nin en büyük bağımsız ve sanat filmleri festivali, kapalı gişe gösterimlerinin sayısı ve katılım kaydedilerek cumartesi günü sona ermiştir.

Jeonju Uluslararası Film Festivali'nin (JIFF) 20.si, Seoul'un 240 kilometre güneyinde, Kuzey Jeolla Eyaleti, Jeonju'da 10 günlük çalışmasını tamamladı. Bu yılki festivalde "Sinema, Özgürlüğüne Kavuşan ve İfade Edilen" sloganı altında, 53 ülkeden 275 film yer aldı.

Etkinlik organizatörleri, 697 gösterimin 390'unun satıldığını ve 2000'de başlayan festival için en yüksek kişi sayısı olan tahmini 85.900 seyirci üyesi olduğunu söyledi.

JIFF organizatörleri büyük ekranların yanı sıra, bu yıl gösterime giren 100 filmden ilham alan posterleri içeren "100 Film, 100 Posterler" başlıklı bir sergi düzenlediler. Ayrıca film yapımcılarının vizyonlarını paylaştıkları ve festivalin 20. yılını anmak için JIFF ile ilişkilerinden bahsettikleri "Newtro Jeonju" adlı bir program yürüttüler.

JEONJU, South Korea, May 11 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's largest festival of independent and art films came to a close on Saturday, having set records for attendance and the number of sold-out screenings.

The 20th edition of the Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) wrapped up its 10-day run in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, 240 kilometers south of Seoul. Under the slogan "Cinema, Liberated and Expressed," this year's festival featured 275 films from 53 countries.

The event organizers said 390 of 697 screenings were sold out and there were an estimated 85,900 audience members -- both highest-ever figures for the festival, which started in 2000.

Away from the big screens, the JIFF organizers held an exhibition titled "100 Films, 100 Posters," featuring posters inspired by 100 movies that were screened this year. They also ran a program called "Newtro Jeonju," in which filmmakers shared their visions and talked about their relationship with JIFF to commemorate the festival's 20th anniversary.

Temples Nationwide Celebrate Buddha's Birthday

Ülke çapındaki Tapınaklar Buda'nın Doğum Gününü Kutluyor

Ülkedeki Budist tapınakları Pazar günü Buda'nın 2563. doğum gününü kutlayan etkinliklere ev sahipliği yaptı.

Seoul şehir merkezinde Jogye Tapınağı'nda düzenlenen bir etkilikte, Kore Budizmi Jogye Düzeni'nin baş patriği Saygın Wonhaeng de dahil olmak üzere yaklaşık 10 bin Budist keşiş bir araya geldi.

Jogye Tapınağı'ndaki grup, temizlik töreni ve meyve, pirinç ve çay gibi altı teklifin Buda'ya sunulmasıyla başladı.
Bir kutlama konuşmasında, saygıdeğer Wonhaeng uyumun ve birliğin önemini vurgulayarak, uyumun insanları gereksiz acı çekmekten kurtarmaya ve rahatlığa götüreceğini söyledi.

Etkinliğe Kültür, Spor ve Turizm Bakanı Park Yang-woo katıldı ve Başkan Moon Jae-in'in tebrik mesajını okudu.

Budist grubunda sanayi kazalarının mağduru aileleri de yer aldı.

Buddhist temples across the nation hosted events marking the two-thousand-563rd birthday of the Buddha on Sunday.

A service held at Jogye Temple in downtown Seoul brought together around ten-thousand Buddhist monks and lay members, including the Venerable Wonhaeng, who is the supreme patriarch of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism.

The mass at Jogye Temple began with a cleansing ceremony and the dedication of six offerings such as fruit, rice and tea to Buddha.

In a celebratory speech, the Venerable Wonhaeng stressed the importance of harmony and unity, saying that harmony will free people from unnecessary suffering and lead to comfort.

Culture, Sports and Tourism Minister Park Yang-woo attended the event and read a congratulatory message by President Moon Jae-in.

Families of victims of industrial accidents also took part in the Buddhist mass.

Bong Joon-ho's 'Parasite' among films in the running for Cannes' top prize

Bu yılki Cannes Film Festivali'nin açılışından bir gün önce, Güney Koreli yönetmen Bong Joon-ho'nun son filminin en iyi ödülü eve götürüp götüremeyeceği halkın dikkatini çekiyor.

"Parazit", Bong’ın yedinci uzun metrajlı ve konulu filmi, festivalin 72. senesinde, Cannes’ın en büyük ödülü olan Palme d'Or (Altın Palmiye) için yarışmaya seçilen 21 filmden biri.

Diğer güçlü adaylar arasında İspanyol yönetmen Pedro Almodovar'ın "Pain and Glory" ve Belçikalı film yapımcıları Jean-Pierre Dardenne ve Luc Dardenne kardeşler tarafından "Ahmed" de bulunuyor.

2017 yılında, “Okja” adlı macera filminin ardından, Cannes'daki en büyük ödül için Bong ikinci kez yarışıyor. “Parazit”,“Anne” ve “Ev Sahibi”ni de içeren diğerleri arasında Bong'un film festivalinde gösterilecek beşinci filmi.

Geçen ay Seul basın toplantısında, 49 yaşındaki yönetmen, "Onur duyuyorum ve gerginim ... (Cannes Film Festivali) gittiğimde ne olursa olsun heyecan verici, yeni ve gergin bir yer" dedi.

Ancak, filmi uluslararası festival için çok incelikli ve nükteli olabileceğinden Cannes'da ödül kazanmak için yanıp tutuşmuyor.

"Yabancıların, filmin (önemini) yüzde 100 kavrayamayacağını düşünüyorum. Bu, Kore izleyicileri gördüğü zaman ancak yüzde 100 anlaşılabilecek ayrıntılarla ve nüanslarla dolu bir Kore filmi.” dedi.

Yarış sıralamasında beşi daha önce Cannes'da en yüksek onuru kazanan büyük isimli yönetmenlere karşı galip gelmek zorundadır. Mesela, "Özür dileriz seni özledik" Ken Loach, Palme d'Or'un 2017 şampiyonu oldu ve "Gizli Bir Yaşam"ın yönetmeni Terrence Malick 2011 yılında nişan ile ödüllendirildi.

Film eleştirmenleri aynı zamanda Bong'un bu yıl en prestijli ödülü kazanmasının zor olacağını söyledi çünkü Japon yönetmen Hirokazu Kore-eda geçen yıl "Mağaza Hırsızları" ile kazandı.

Seul'un güneyinde bulunan Yongin'deki Kangnam Üniversitesi'nden bir film eleştirmeni ve profesörü olan Kang Yoo-jung, "Cannes, bütün bu ağır topları yenerek iki yıl üst üste başka bir Asya yönetmenine büyük ödülü vermekte tereddüt edecek. Ama en iyi erkek oyuncu ödülü gibi başka ödüller de bekleyebiliriz.” dedi.

"Parazit", bu yıl Cannes’a davet edilen tek Güney Koreli isim değil.

Lee Won-tae'nin yönettiği aksiyon-macera filmi “Gangaster, Polis, Şeytan”, Cannes'ın rekabete aykırı sıralamasında yer aldı. Festivalin Yönetmenlerin 2 haftası kategorisinde, Jeong Da-hee'nin animasyon filmi "Hareketler" kısa ve orta uzunlukta filmler bölümünde gösterilecek.

Kang, “Cannes artık Kore film endüstrisine daha derin bir şekilde bakıyor. Sadece ustalara değil, aynı zamanda Kore'deki gelecek vaadeden yönetmenlere de dikkat ediyor” dedi.

Cannes Film Festivali'nin 72.sinin, Jim Jarmusch’un açılış etkinliği “Ölü Ölmez” ile 14-25 Mayıs tarihlerinde gerçekleştirilmesi kararlaştırıldı.

With one day to go before the opening of this year's Cannes Film Festival, whether South Korean director Bong Joon-ho's latest will be able to take home the top prize is drawing public attention here.

"Parasite," the seventh feature flick from Bong, is one of the 21 films chosen to compete for the Palme d'Or, Cannes' highest prize, at the 72nd edition of the festival.

Among other strong nominees are "Pain and Glory" by Spanish director Pedro Almodovar and "Ahmed" by the Belgian filmmaking brothers Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne.

It is the second time Bong has been in contention for the top prize in Cannes, following his adventure film "Okja" in 2017. "Parasite" is Bong's fifth film to be screened at the film festival -- others include "Host" and "Mother."

The new film, scheduled to premiere on May 21 in Cannes, is a tragicomedy about a poor family becoming obsessed with a rich one after their son gets a job as a tutor for the wealthy family.

"I am honored and nervous. ... (The Cannes Film Festival) is a place that is exciting, new and tense no matter when I go," said the 49-year old director in a Seoul press conference last month.

But he is not hung up on winning a prize in Cannes as his film may be too nuanced and subtle for the international festival.

"Foreigners, I think, would not be able to grasp (the significance of) the film 100 percent," he said. "It's such a Korean film, filled with details and nuances that could only be understood 100 percent when Korean audiences see it."

He has to carry the day against big-name directors in the competition lineup, five of whom have previously won the highest honor at Cannes. For instance, Ken Loach of "Sorry We Missed You" is the 2017 winner of the Palme d'Or, and Terrence Malick of "A Hidden Life" was awarded the gong in 2011.

Film critics also say that it will be hard for Bong to clinch the most prestigious award this year because Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda won it last year for "Shoplifters".

"Cannes will hesitate to grant the grand prize to another Asian director two years in a row, beating out all these heavyweights," said Kang Yoo-jung, a film critic and professor at Kangnam University in Yongin, just south of Seoul. "But we can expect other awards like best actor prize."

"Parasite" is not the only South Korean title invited to this year's Cannes.

The action-adventure film "The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil," directed by Lee Won-tae, has been included in Cannes' non-competition lineup. In the Directors' Fortnight category of the festival, Jeong Da-hee's animated film "Movements" will screen in the short and medium-length films section.

"Cannes now looks into the Korean movie industry in a deeper way. It pays attention not only to masters, but also to up-and-coming directors in Korea," said Kang.

The 72nd edition of the Cannes Film Festival is slated for May 14-25, with "The Dead Don't Die" by Jim Jarmusch opening the event.

Survey: Hallyu Taking Vietnam by Storm

Anket: Vietnam’ı Etkisi Altına Alan Hallyu Fırtınası 

Yeni bir araştırma Hallyu'nun veya Kore Dalgası fenomeninin Vietnam'ı etkisi altına aldığını gösteriyor.

Vietnamlı pazar araştırmacısı Q & Me pazar günü yaptığı açıklamada, 917 Vietnamlı yetişkine Güney Kore hakkındaki düşüncelerini sorduğunu söyledi. Ankete katılanların yüzde 76'sı ülke hakkında olumlu görüşlere sahip olduğunu, yüzde 37'si ise Güney Kore'yi çok sevdiklerini söyledi.

Güney Kore'yi düşündüklerinde ilk akla gelenler sorulduğunda, yüzde 42'si kimchiyi takiben Kore yemeği, K-pop ve Kore filmlerini söyledi.

Yüzde 25'i Güney Kore filmlerini ve TV dizilerini çok sevdiğini belirtirken Kore yemekleri ile ilgili olarak, yüzde 68’i beğendiklerini, yüzde 32’si sevdiklerini söyledi.

Ankette ayrıca katılımcıların yüzde 51'inin  K-pop'u hoş olduğu ve yüzde %20’sinin K-pop’u sevdiği, en sevdikleri grupların BTS, Big Bang ve Blackpink olduğu ortaya çıktı.

A new survey shows that Hallyu, or the Korean Wave phenomenon, has taken Vietnam by storm.

Vietnamese market researcher Q&Me said on Sunday that it asked 917 Vietnamese adults about their thoughts on South Korea. Among the respondents, 76 percent said they have a positive view regarding the nation while 37 percent said they are deeply fond of South Korea.

When asked what first comes to mind when they think about South Korea, 42 percent said Korean food, followed by kimchi, K-pop and Korean movies.  

In regards to Korean food,  68 percent said they like it and 32 percent said they love it, while 25 percent were very fond of South Korean movies and TV dramas.  

The survey also found that 51 percent of respondents like and 20 percent love K-pop, with their most favorite groups being BTS, Big Bang and Blackpink.

Korean Neo-Confucian Academies Poised to Make UNESCO World Heritage List

Kore Yeni-Konfüçyüs Akademileri UNESCO Dünya Mirası Listesi’nde Yer Almak İçin Hazır

Kore'nin tarihi Yeni-Konfüçyüs akademileri veya diğer adıyla Seowon, UNESCO’nun Dünya Mirası Listesi’ndeki yerini korumak için poz veriyor.

Kültürel Miras İdaresi salı günü, Dünya Miras Komitesi'ne (WHC) bir danışma grubu olan Uluslararası Anıtlar ve Siteler Konseyi'nin (ICOMOS) dokuz akademiden oluşan bir grubun miras listesine eklenmesini önerdiğini söyledi.

ICOMOS her yıl ülkelerin aday gösterdiği tüm kültürel ve karma mülkleri değerlendirir. Özellikleri değerlendirdikten sonra ICOMOS, WHC'nin yıllık oturumuna tavsiyelerini sunar ve daha sonra listelenen mülklerle ilgili nihai karardan sorumludur. ICOMOS’un listeleme önerisini güvence altına alan özellikler, çok önemli bir değişken olmadıkça, genellikle listeye eklenir.

Seowon hakkındaki nihai karar, 30 Haziran'da Azerbaycan'da açılacak ve temmuz ayının sonuna kadar sürecek olan WHC'nin 43. oturumunda verilecek.

Eğer Seowon bu listede yer alırsa, Güney Kore Dünya Miras Listesi'nde yazılı toplam 14 mülke sahip olacak.

Seowon, Joseon Hanedanlığı döneminde kurulan Yeni-Konfüçyüs akademileridir. Ünlü Konfüçyüs bilgelerinin anma törenlerine hizmet etmek ve ayrıca Yeni-Konfüçyanizm eğitimi alan gençleri eğitmek için kullanılıyorlardı.

Korea's historical Neo-Confucian academies, or Seowon, are posed to secure a spot on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

The Cultural Heritage Administration said Tuesday that the International Council on Monuments and Sites(ICOMOS), an advisory group to the World Heritage Committee(WHC), recommended that a group of nine academies be added to the heritage list.  

ICOMOS evaluates all cultural and mixed properties nominated by countries each year. After evaluating the properties, ICOMOS presents its recommendations to the annual session of the WHC which is then responsible for the final decision regarding the listed properties. Properties that secure the ICOMOS’ recommendation for listing are usually added to the list, unless there is a crucial variable.  

The final decision on Seowon will come during the 43rd session of the WHC which will open in Azerbaijan on June 30th and run through July tenth.  

If Seowon makes the list, South Korea will have a total of 14 properties inscribed on the World Heritage List.  

Seowon are Neo-Confucian academies set up during the Joseon Dynasty. They were used to serve memorial rites for renowned Confucian sages and also to educate young people studying Neo-Confucianism.
