Contemporary Artists Show Pop Sensibilities

Modern Sanatçılar Pop Anlayışı Gösteriyorlar

K Modern Sanat Müzesi; Aralık ayında, Seoul’ün güneyinde Gangnam semtindeki işlek merkezi sokaklardan birinde açılan büyük bir müze. Yakın zamanda iki tanınmış Koreli sanatçının -Dongi Lee ve Osang Gwon- solo sergisini açtı.

İki sanatçının “Bu Modern Sanat Müzesi Kısım 2” başlıklı yarı-retrospektif gösterileri, ziyaretçilerin bu yeni müzenin karakterini anlamasına yardımcı olacak. Lee bir ressam ve Gwon fotoğraf heykelciliği ile çalışıyor ve ikisinin de kendi özgün tarzları var. Ama bazı ortak yönler mevcut – modern pop kültürü ile yakın ilişkiler ve mizahi etkilerle güçlü görsel mesajlar.

Bu sergi için; Lee, Koreli pop sanatçısı temsilcisi olarak adlandırılır, onu kısa zamanda üne kavuşturan erken eserleri “Atomaus” serisinden yakın zamandaki “Soap Opera” ve “Eclecticism” serilerinden çizimlere kadar geniş bir yelpazede resimler sergiliyor.

“Atomaus” serisi; sanatçının Japonya ve ABD’den ağır biçimde etkilendiğini satirik biçimde diler getirmek için Atom (Astro Boy) -Japon animesinin kahraman robot çocuğu- ve Disney’in Mickey Mouse’unu birleştirerek yarattığı bir karakteri içeriyor. “Soap Opera” serisi, hallyu sebebiyle artık uluslararası arenada bilinen Kore televizyon dizilerinden klişe sahneleri yeniden canlandırıyor. “Eclecticism” serisi çeşitli reklam kampanyalarının görselleri ve görsel propagandalarını soyut ekspresyonist bir tarzda bir araya getiriyor.

Gwon, 43, fotoğraf heykelciliğinin öncüsü olarak adlandırılır, “Deodorant Type” diye adlandırdığı serisinden heykelleri ile birlikte en son “New Structure” serisini ve daha fazlasını sergiliyor.

“Deodorant Type” serisi; strafor gibi hafif materyallerin, değişik açılardan ve çeşitli ışıklar altında çekilmiş modellerin birçok fotoğrafıyla kaplanarak yapılan model heykellerinden oluşuyor. Kübik resimlerin üç boyutlu halleri gibiler. Bu seride klasik heykellerin ikonografileri modern elementlerle yeniden yapılmıştır.

“New Structure” serisi heykeller, sanatçının perspektifle oyunları. Üç boyutlu günlük nesnelerin iki boyutlu fotoğraflarını çekti ve Amerikan sanatçı Alexander Calder’in “Stabile” serisi tarzında büyütülmüş iki boyutlu fotoğraflarla üç boyutlu heykeller yaptı.

Contemporary Artists Show Pop Sensibilities

The K Museum of Contemporary Art is a large museum that opened in December on a busy downtown street of Gangnam district, southern Seoul. It recently opened solo exhibitions of two well-known Korean artists - Dongi Lee and Osang Gwon.

The semi-retrospective shows of the two artists under the title “This is Contemporary Art Museum Part 2” will help visitors to this new museum understand its character. Lee is a painter and Gwon works with photography sculpture, and each has their own unique style. But they share some commonalities - close relations with contemporary pop culture and strong visual messages with a tinge of humor.

For this exhibition, Lee, dubbed a representative Korean pop artist, presents paintings that range from his early “Atomaus” series, which brought him early fame, to his recent paintings from the “Soap Opera” and “Eclecticism” series.

The “Atomaus” series features a character the artist created by combining Atom (Astro Boy), the boy robot hero of Japanese anime, and Disney’s Mickey Mouse, to satirize Korean pop culture heavily influenced by Japan and the United States. The “Soap Opera” series reproduces cliche scenes from Korean TV dramas now internationally known due to hallyu. The “Eclecticism” series combines the diverse images of ad campaigns and propaganda with images in abstract expressionist style.

Gwon, 43, dubbed the pioneer of photography sculpture, presents sculptures from what he calls the “Deodorant Type” series, along with his latest “New Structure” series and more.

The “Deodorant Type” series are sculptures of models made with light materials such as Styrofoam covered with numerous photographs of models, taken at different angles under various kinds of light. They are like three-dimensional versions of Cubist paintings. The iconographies of classic sculptures were reproduced with contemporary elements in this series.

The “New Structure” series of sculptures are the artist’s play with perspectives. He took the 2-D photos of 3-D daily objects and made 3-D sculptures with the enlarged 2-D photos in the style of American artist Alexander Calder’s “Stabile” series.
