On Saturday night after watching Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (weee!), we hot-footed it to Tottenham Court Road for a much anticipated Korean dinner.
I have to admit that I’m not at all an expert on Korean food (I tend to stick to Chinese and Japanese food if I had the choice in the holy trinity of eastern Asian cuisine!) – so I let Yuki do the choosing. He recommended the kimchi hotpot, so I chose the one with marinated beef. For £8.50, I’d say it’s pretty good value – the hotpot is massive (though it looks shallow here) and comes chock full of an array of ingredients, including: tofu, mushrooms, radishes, courgette, cabbage, vermicelli noodles and of course, the beef. The kimchi broth is warming and hearty, with a kick of spiciness. The flavour isn’t as harsh or acidic as kimchi in its original form, with rich meaty undertones. It was perfectly balanced – spicy, sweet, sour, salty. And while this isn’t Japanese cusine, there’s definitely an element of umami in there too! Here’s a better picture of the hotpot – for this post I wanted to show the atmosphere of the restaurant. As its name suggests (café), the place is homey and casual, unlike its counterpart Woo Jung two doors down.
