An Invaluable Wooden Stamp / Paha Biçilmez Tahta Mühür

1000 yıl kadar önce köy okulu müdürü ihtiyar bir adam, Geumgang’ta Hwaeomsa yakınlarında yaşardı.

Her sabah dağa tırmanıp gün doğumunu izler, nehir Güneş’e doğru aksa, dağ da biraz bu tarafa gelse ne güzel görünürdü diye düşünürdü.

Birgün kapısında nereden gelmiş diye sorulsa cevap vermeyecek bir çocuk göründü. Çocuğun evinde kalmasına müsaade etti. Ona ders verdi. Çocuk o kadar zekiydi ki, kısa zamanda yaşıtlarının önüne geçti. Çocuk eve yerleşeli üç sene geçti.

Gün geldi kendisinin Deniz Kralı’nın oğlu olduğunu, işlediği günah yüzünden saraydan atıldığını söyledi. Çocuk için sarayına dönme vakti geldi çattı, ihtiyara veda etti. Evden ayrılmadan öğretmenine içteki ve dıştaki düşmanlardan korunma yollarını gösteren Jeonggaprok adında bir kitap verdi. Aradan üç gün geçti. Çocuk geri geldi:

“Babam Deniz Kralı sizi getirmemi istedi. Lütfen benimle birlikte Deniz Sarayı’na gelin.”

İhtiyar adam çocuğu gölete kadar izledi, ardından gölete daldılar.

Saraya vardıklarında Deniz Kralı, oğluyla ilgilenen ihtiyar adama teşekkür etti, ona ihsanda bulundu. Günler sonra ihtiyar adam eve dönmeden, Kral, hazinelerden bir hazine seçmesini istedi. Prens yemek masasının köşesinde duran tahta mührü almasını istedi. O mühür çok büyük öneme sahip bir hazineydi. Kişiye dünyada istediği her şeye dilediği gibi hükmetme gücü veriyordu.

İhtiyar adam mührü istediğinde, Kral şaşırdı ancak isteği geri çeviremezdi. İhtiyar adam yeryüzüne o mühürle çıktı. Dağa tırmandığı gün nehir ve dağın yeniden şekillenmesini istedi, dileği yerine geldi.

Ancak o zaman mührün önemini anlayabildi. Mühre kendisinden daha layık birilerini bulmaya karar verdi. Mühürle uyumlu birini bulabilmek için ülkenin her yerini dolaştı.

Yolculuğu sırasında, keşişinin ders çalışmakta olduğu ufak bir tapınağa geldi. O noktada büyük bir tapınak olmasını diledi, 300 keşişin barınabileceği büyük bir tapınak belirdi. Tapınağın kirişine delik açıp mührü içine koydu. Tapınağa Haeinsa dedi ve gitti. Jeongmansu, hükümetin üst düzey yetkililerinden biri, güneydoğudan gelen üç kutlu ışık ışınını gördü.

Kralı ışıktan haberdar etti, ışığın peşine düştü daha evvel adını hiç duymadığı bir tapınakla karşılaştı. Işık, tapınak kirişinden geliyordu. Mührü kirişteki yerinden aldı. Üstünde mühürle ülkeyi dolaşmaya başladı. Pyeongyang’a geldiğinde okyanus manzaralı bir handa konakladı. Kendisi uyurken odasına bir kadın sızdı, geceyi onunla geçirdi. Kadın, şafak sökmeden odadan ayrılırken adama seneye aynı gün aynı saatte buluşmayı önerdi.

Geceleyin, kadın gelip adamı kendi evine davet etti. Adam, kadını okyanus kıyısına kadar takip etti. Kadın, sihirli sözlerle okyanusu ikiye yardı, beraberce okyanustan geçtiler. Eve vardıklarında adam henüz 2 aylık bir bebekle karşılaştı. Kadın, bebeğin babasının o olduğunu iddia etti. Mührü bebeğe vermesini istedi; adam bunu reddedemezdi. Halbuki bu tamamen mührü geri almayı planlamış Deniz Kralı’nın işiydi. Kadın ise Deniz Kralı’nın kılık değiştirmiş kızından başkası değildi. Tahta mührün Deniz Sarayı’na dönüş hikayesi böyledir. Kral Jeongmanin hâlâ kızı ve oğluyla birlikte sarayında yaşar. Dünyadaki tüm kötülük ve zorlukların ancak bu kızın tahta mühürle birlikte yeryüzüne çıktığı vakit önlenebileceği söylenir.

An Invaluable Wooden Stamp

About 1000 years ago an old man, a village schoolmaster, lived near HWAEOMSA in GEUMGANG.

He used to climb the mountain and watch the sun rise in the morning, thinking to himself that the scenery might be better if the stream goes that way, and the mountain moves a little bit this way.

One day he found a child at his door, who would not answer when asked where he came from. He let the child stay at his house, and taught him. He was such a smart child that he could soon exceed other children under this old man. Three years had passed since the child came to his house.

One day he said he was the son of the Sea King, expelled from the palace because of a sin. Now it's time to go back and he said good bye. Before leaving, he gave his master a book titled JEONGGAPROK, which contained methods of avoiding troubles rising from the inside and outside of the country. Three days later, he came back and said,

"My father, the Sea King, asked me to bring you. Please come with me to the Sea Palace."

The old man followed him to a pond, into which the child jumped with him on his back.

When they got to the palace, the Sea King thanked him for taking care of his son, and lavished hospitality on him. Several days later when he was to go home, the King asked him to choose a prize among the treasures in the palace. The son advised the old man to ask for a wooden stamp sitting on the corner of the dinner table. The stamp was a treasure with much importance. It enables one to command everything in the world at his will, and to solve every difficulties in the world.

When he asked for the stamp, the King, though surprised, could not refuse as he promised him anything he wanted. The old man came out to the land with the wooden stamp. One day he went to the mountain and wished the stream and the mountain rearranged, as he usually did, and it came true.

Only then did he realize the value of the stamp. He decided that the stamp deserved a better owner than he and wandered around the country to find a man to entrust the stamp with.

During his journey, he came to a small temple where an old monk was studying. He wished a big temple on the spot, and there came into existence a big temple which could accommodate 300 monks. He bored a drill into the girder of the temple, put the stamp in it. named the temple HAEINSA, and left. JEONGMANSU, a high official in the government, saw three rays of auspicious light coming from the Southeast.

He informed the King of the light and went after the light to where he found a big temple which he had never heard of. The light was coming out of the girder of the temple. He had the girder replaced and retrieved the wooden stamp. He left on a journey around the country with the stamp on him. When he came to PYEONGYANG, he lodged at an inn with the ocean in front. While he was sleeping, a woman sneaked into his room and spent the night with him. Before leaving at dawn, she suggested meeting again at the same time next year. He kept on his journey until he lodged at the same inn one year later.

At night, she came and invited him to her house. He followed her to the ocean, where she said the magic words and the ocean parted. When he followed her to the house, there was a two-month-old baby, whom she claimed to be his son. She told him to give the wooden stamp to the baby, which he could not refuse. It was all the Sea King's plan to retrieve the wooden stamp. She was no other than the King's daughter in disguise. That's how the wooden stamp returned to the Sea Palace, and JEONGMANIN is still living in the palace with the King's daughter and his son. All the trouble and difficulties happening in this world can be eliminated only when she comes up with the wooden stamp, people say.
