A Heron And A Serpent / Balıkçıl ve Yılan
Çiftçi tarlanın dışına çıktı. Balıkçılı yemeye çalışan bir yılan gördü ve onu kürekle öldürdü. Küreğin parçası yıldanda saplı kaldı. Birgün adam balık yedi. Aniden, bedeni şişti ve ölecek oldu. O anda balıkçıl sürüsü uçarak geldi ve adamın evinin etrafını sardı, oturdu. Adam ön bahçeye uzanınca balıkçıllar adamı gagalayarak iyileştirdi. Yediği balığın kalanına bakınca kürek parçası gördü. O zaman ne olduğunu anladı.
Çiftçi yolda giderken balıkçılın sebepsiz yere telaşlandığını görmüştü. Yılan balıkçılı yemek üzere ağaca tırmanıyordu. Elindeki kürekle yılanı öldürmüştü. Küreğin parçası yılanda saplı kalmıştı. Ancak adam bunu önemsemeyip uzaklaşmıştı.
Birgün, ucuza balık almış, gelininden balığı dilimleyip büyük bir tencerede kaynatmasını istemişti. Eskiden yemeğe yaşı en büyük olan kişi başlardı. Bu sebeple balığı yiyen ilk kişi çiftçi adam oldu.
Yedikten hemen sonra şişmeye başladı. Ayrıca aile bireyleri gümüş kaşık ve çucukların renk değiştirdiğini gördü. Çünkü gümüş zehri saptayabilir. Çiftçi ölmek üzereydi. O sırada balıkçıl sürüsü adamın evine uçtu ve orada bekledi. Adam kuşların davranışının bir sebebi olabileceğini anladı.
Ailesine: “Balıkçılların burada olmasının bir sebebi olmalı. Dışarı çıkmam yardımcı olun.” dedi.
Ailesi ona şilte serip uzanmasını sağladılar. O kadar şişmişti ki hiçbir şey giyemedi. Yere uzandığında, balıkçıllar yanına konup adamın bedenini gagaladılar. Adamın bedeninden su gibi ufak yılanlar fışkırdı. Adam iyileşince balığın geri kalanına baktı ve öldürdüğü yılana saplana kürek parçasını gördü. Anladı ki, yılan intikam almak için kendisni balık kılığına sokmuştu.

A farmer went out to a field. He saw a serpent which was trying to eat a heron and killed it with a shovel. A piece of the shovel was stuck in the heron. One day, he ate a fish. All of a sudden, he became swollen and was about to die. At that moment, a flock of herons flew and sat around his house. When he lied down in the front garden, they cured him by pecking him with their beaks. When he looked at the rest of the fish he had been eating, he found a piece of a shovel. He then realised what really happened.
A farmer who was on the way to a field saw a heron which was making a great fuss. A serpent was climbing up a tree to catch the heron. He hit and killed the serpent with a shovel he was carrying. A piece of the shovel was stuck in the serpent. But he didn't care about it and threw it away.
One day, he bought a, nice big fish for a cheap price. He asked his daughter-in-law to cut it into pieces and boil it in a big pot. In the past, it was customary that the eldest in the family ate first. So his daughter-in-law cooked it and took a bowl of it to her father-in-law, the farmer.
Just after he ate it, he began to become swollen. The families also saw that the silver spoons and chopsticks were becoming coloured (Silver products can detect poison!). The farmer appeared to be near death. Then, a flock of herons flew to the house and sat about it. The farmer felt that there was some reason for it. So he asked his families,
"There must be some reason for the herons to be here. Help me lie down outside."
So they prepared a mattress and let him lie down. He was so swollen that he couldn't wear anything. When he laid down, the herons flew to him and began to peck his body with their beaks. Then, a lot of small serpent pieces poured out of his body like water. When he recovered, he looked into the rest of the fish he had eaten and found the piece of shovel that was stuck in the serpent. He realised that the serpent hadtransformed itself into a fish in order to avenge his death.
