Dae Jung-sang (625?-698?) was the contribute of Balhae, and the father of Dae Joyeong, who was the founder of Balhae. Though much of the credit for the founding of Balhae went to his son, many historians still give credit to Dae Jung-sang as the main supporter and leader in the founding of Balhae.

BACKGROUND
Dae Jung-sang was born in Goguryeo. Many ancient Korean sources and the (Old) Book of Tang state that he was of the ethnic Goguryeo race, and was from a noble family that existed from the founding of Goguryeo.

Dae Jung-sang's service to Goguryeo is thought to have started when the Tang invaded Goguryeo in the second war of 661. General Dae Jung-sang was an active participant in this war and also helped defeat the Tang armies. Following the death of Yeon Gaesomun, the Tang invaded Goguryeo for a third time, and successfully conquered Pyeongyang in 668. Despite the fall of Pyeongyang, most of the territory of Goguryeo was not completely pacified and under Tang influence. As a result, revival movements resisted viciously against the Tang.

GOGURYEO REVIVAL MOVEMENT
Most of the Goguryeo Aristocracy, including him, were taken to Yingzhou (Hanzi :營州), the homeland of the Khitan. Yingzhou became part of the Tang's General Protectorate to Pacify the East, and the Khitan were enraged.

In 696, the Khitan led a revolt that killed the cruel governor of the protectorate and gave Yingzhou back to the Khitan. Dae Jung-sang allied with the Baishan Mohe leader Geolsa Biu (Hangul: 걸사비우, Hanja: 乞四比羽 pinyin: Qǐsì bǐyǔ), and the two powers opposed the Tang in 698. The two leaders resisted the Tang's attack, but were forced to retreat. Both Geolsa Biu, and Dae Jung-sang died in battle, but Dae Jo-yeong led the remaining Goguryeo and Malgal soldiers and defeated the Tang army at the Battle of Cheonmun-ryeong and established the Balhae Empire.

FAMILY
The most notable and famous of his children was his eldest, Dae Jo-yeong. Dae Jung-sang had another son, Dae Ya-bal (대야발), and probably also had other children besides Dae Jo-yeong because the Balhae Royal line consisted of two lineages, one from Dae Jo-yeong and the other from Dae Ya-bal.

LEGACY
Dae Jung-sang's forgotten establishing of a Successor-state of Goguryeo laid the foundations for the founding of an even more powerful kingdom, which was Balhae. Despite all of his hard work, most people remember his son Dae Joyeong as the founder of Balhae. Nevertheless, his descendants continued on the Balhae Royal line to the fifteenth generation.

Though Balhae fell, it left a further legacy. The last princes of Balhae quickly gathered the Balhae Aristocracy and retreated to Goryeo for sanctuary. Taejo of Goryeo gladly took them in and the Dae family continued on and still survives to this day as the Hyeop-gye Tae clan (협계 태씨).

The future Queen Hyoui was born on the thirteenth day of the twelfth lunar month in the twenty-ninth year of King Yeongjo's reign. She was the daughter of Kim Si-muk (Hangul: 김시묵) and his wife Lady Hong of the Namyang Hong clan (Hangul: 남양 홍씨) She married Yi San, then known as the Royal Prince Successor Descendant, in 1762, on the tenth day of the second lunar month in the thirty-sixth year of King Yeongjo's reign. She became Queen Consort upon her husband's accession to the throne in 1776.

Queen Hyoui did not bear King Jeongjo any children, but she adopted the sons of two of her husband's concubines, Royal Noble Consort Ui and Royal Noble Consort Su, as her own. The son of Royal Noble Consort Ui died young, but the son of Royal Noble Consort Su would eventually succeed King Jeongjo on the throne as Sunjo .

Queen Hyoui outlived her husband, who died in 1800, by 21 years. She died at Jagyeong Hall, Changgyeong Palace, Hanseong, on the ninth day of the third month in the twenty-first year of King Sunjo's reign.

She served as regent of Goryeo from 997 to 1009 during the minority of her son, King Mokjong of Goryeo. Her life story was the basis for the drama Empress Cheonchu.

Biography

Queen Heonae was born into the Hwangju branch of the royal house of the Kingdom of Goryeo. Her father, Wang Uk (Hangul: 왕욱), was the seventh son of King Taejo of Goryeo by his fourth wife, Queen Sinjeong (Hangul: 신정왕후). She had one older brother, Wang Chi, the future King Seongjong of Goryeo, and one younger sister who eventually became the mother of King Hyeonjong of Goryeo.

Although a male-line descendant of King Taejo, Queen Heonae did not carry the surname of the Goryeo royal family, Wang (Hangul: 왕). Instead, she and her younger sister used the surname Hwangbo (Hangul: 황보), which was the surname of their paternal grandmother, Queen Sinjeong.

Queen Heonae married King Gyeongjong of Goryeo, her first cousin. She was the sister of King Seongjong of Goryeo, who succeeded her spouse as king. When her son, Mokjong of Goryeo became King in 997, she became Regent. However, she contract a marriage of consent with Kim Chi-yang, and gave birth to a Kim Chi-yang's son. Kim Chi-yang conspired to set his son on the throne.

When Kim Chi-yang burned the Manwoldae, royal palace, to the ground, threatening to kill the king and take over, King Mokjong called General Gang Jo to the capital city of Kaesong. General Gang Jo immediately executed Kim Chi-Yang and his supporters.

Then, the scholar officials, enemies of Gang Jo, spread rumors and lies that the general was planning to take over the government for himself. These rumors reached the Emperor, and he planned to kill Gang Jo. Gang Jo heard of the conspiracy and doubts of the Emperor, and ordered his army to attack and kill all of his enemies, including the emperor. After assassinating Emperor Mokjong, General Gang placed Emperor Hyeonjong of Goryeo on the throne. Empress Cheonchu was exiled to Hwangju. In 1029, she return to the royal court and died in her chamber at Sungdeok Palace.

Queen Cheolin (철인왕후 김씨, 23 March 1837 - 12 May 1878), was a Queen consort of Korea and the wife of King Cheoljong of Joseon.
She was the daughter of Kim Mun-geun (김문근) and Lady Min. As part of the Andong Kim clan's manipulation of King Cheoljong, she married Cheoljong in 1851.
In 1864, King Cheoljong was dying and there were no male heirs, the result of suspected foul play by a rival branch of the royal family, the Andong Kim clan. The Andong Kim clan had risen to power through intermarriage with the House of Yi. Queen Cheolin, the queen consort of Cheoljong and a member of the Andong Kim clan, claimed the right to choose the next king, although traditionally, the eldest queen dowager is the one with the authority to select the new king. Cheoljong’s cousin, Grand Royal Dowager Queen Sinjeong (the widow of King Heonjong's father [entitled Ikjong]) of the Pungyang Jo clan, who too had risen to prominence by intermarriage with the Yi family, currently held this title.
Queen Sinjeong saw an opportunity to advance the cause of the Pungyang Jo clan, the only true rival of the Andong Kim clan in Korean politics. As Cheoljong fell deeper under his illness, the Grand Royal Dowager Queen was approached by Yi Ha-eung, an obscure descendant of King Yeongjo, through his son Crown Prince Sado.
By the time Cheoljong's death had become a known fact, the Andong Kim clan was powerless according to law as the seal lay in the hands of the Grand Royal Dowager Queen Sinjeong.

Queen Jeonghui (1418–1483) was a Queen consort of Korea as the spouse of king Sejo of Joseon. She served as regent of Korea in 1468–1469 and in 1469–1477.

Daughter of a Prime minister, Jeonghui became regent when her son, Yejong of Joseon ascended to the throne in 1468, because he was physically ill. According to records of this era, political decisions were taken by the Queen and three subjects nominated by King Sejo.

In 1469, her son was succeeded by his nephew, her grandson Seongjong of Joseon, and she continued her regency because of Seongjong's young age (13). She ruled the nation in Seongjongs name along with her daughter-in-law, the king's mother, Queen Insu (whose husband had never actually been king). During her regency common farmers were granted the right to cultivate fields which originally belonged to the military. In 1474, the code of law, first ordered by King Sejo, was completed and put into effect.

Queen Sunwon (15 May 1789 - 4 August 1857) was a Queen consort of Korea as the spouse of Sunjo of Joseon. She served as regent of Korea from 1834–1841 and from 1849-1852.

She was a daughter of Kim Jo-sun (김조순, 1765–1832) of the powerful Andong Kim clan. Her mother was Lady Sim (심씨). In 1802, she married King Sunjo of Joseon as his first and only queen consort. Her husband died in 1834, and she became regent for her eight-year-old grandson, King Heonjong. Political power in the kingdom remained in the hands of her family, the Andong Kim clan. At the death of her grandson in 1849, she again became regent.

Queen Sunwon died at Changdeok Palace on 4 August 1857. She was posthumously honored as "Empress Sunwonsuk" (순원숙황후).

Her capping ceremony took place in 1743, the 19th year of King Yeongjo's reign, where she was officially conferred upon the title "Princess Hwahyeop." In the same year, she married the then right prime minister's son Yeongseongwi Sin Gwang-su.

She died of measles in 1752 at the age of 19.

Princess Hwahyop was exceptionally beautiful and devoted to her parents, but King Yeongjo was very cold towards her, probably because of his disappointment that the child was not a boy.Similarly disfavoured by their father, Prince Sado had this special affinity with her. He was always attentive to her and when she died, he mourned her with real sorrow.

Japonlarin, bir Japon asilinin kiziyla evlenmesi yönündeki baskilari atlatmis ve Kore prensesi Yeonghye'nin esi Marki Park Yeong-hyo'nun torunu hanimefendi Park Chan-ju ile evlenmistir.Bu evlilikten, 23 Nisan 1936 yilinda dogan Yi Chung (李淸 이청 i cheong) ve 9 Kasim 1940 yilinda dogan Yi Jeong (李淙 이종 i jong) isimlerinde iki çocuklari olmustur.

Prens Wu, Çin'de bulunan Japon ordusuna katilmasi için zorlanmistir. 1930'larda tegmen olarak görevlendirilmis, 1943 yilinda binbasiliga terfi ettirilmis ve 1944 yilinda ise yarbaylik mevkisine yükselmistir. Çin'deyken, sürgün edilmis Koreli ve Çinli insanlar tarafindan olusturulan savasçi direnis hareketini desteklemesi ile üne kavusmustur. Ayrica, sürgündeki Kosullu Kore Hükümeti baskanlarindan biri olan General Yu Dong-ryul'un kizi Yu jung-soon'u 1943 yilinda evlat edinmistir. Prenses Wu'nun tüm hayati boyunca varligini reddettmesine ragmen Yi Chonam ismindeki çocugun, Prens Wu'nun soyundan oldugu iddia edilmistir ve hala bu iddia sürmektedir.

Prens Wu, 1945 yilinda Hiroshima'ya tayin edilmis, 6 Agustos 1945 tarihinde çalisma binasina giderken yolda patlayan bombadan agir bir sekilde yaralanmis ve tibbi yardim merkezine götürüldükten bir gün sonra ölmüstür. Ölümünden sonra albaylik rütbesine yükseltilmistir. Cenaze töreninden sonra, Ikinci Tegmen Albayi Yoshinari Hiroshi (吉成 弘), Prens Wu'yu koruyamamasinin bedeli olarak seppuku (bir tür Japon intihar sekli) yöntemi ile kendini öldürmüstür. Prens Wu'nun cesedi daha sonra Kore'ye götürülmüs ve savasin son buldugu gün olan 15 Agustos tarihinde Hongneung Imparatorluk Mezarina gömülmüstür.

Prince Wu of Korea (1912-1945), was the 4th head of Unhyeon Palace and a member of the Imperial family of Korea. He was born the second son of Prince Gang, the fifth son of Emperor Gojong.

At the age of five, he was adopted to be the heir of deceased Prince Jun (or Prince Yeongseon, 永宣君李埈 yeong seon gun i jun), the 3rd head of Unhyeon Palace and the only son of the elder brother of Emperor Gojong, Prince Hui (or Prince Heung, 興親王李熹 heung chin wang i hui or Yi Jaemyeon, Prince Wanheung of Korea, 完興君李載冕 wan heung gun i jae myeon). He was taken to Japan shortly afterwards in pretence of educational purposes.

However, unlike his elder brother, Prince Geon (李鍵 이건 i geon), he maintained his integrity as a Korean, despite his Japanese education. This made him the favourite son of his father, Prince Gang, who himself attempted to escape from Korea to join the exiled Korean Government. He overcame all attempts by the Japanese to marry him off to a minor Japanese noble, and married Lady Park Chan-ju, a granddaughter of Marquis Park Yeong-hyo who was a husband of Princess Yeonghye of Korea. They had two children, Yi Chung (李淸 이청 i cheong) (born 23 April 1936) and Yi Jong (李淙 이종 i jong) (born 9 November 1940 - death).

Prince Wu was forced to serve in the Japanese Army stationed in China. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1930s, he was promoted to Major by 1943 and Lieutenant-Colonel in 1944. While in China, he is reputed to have supported the guerilla resistance movement by exiled Korean and Chinese people. He also supposedly fathered a child with Yu Jung-soon in 1943, the daughter of General Yu Dong-ryul, a minister in Korean Provisional Government in exile. The child, named Yi Chonam, asserted and still asserts the parentage of Prince Wu, though Princess Wu refused to recognise him during her lifetime.

Prince Wu was restationed to Hiroshima in 1945, and on 6 August 1945, he was severely injured by the atomic bomb blast on the way to his office, and died later that day at a medical aid station. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Colonel. After his funeral, Adjutant Lieutenant Colonel Yoshinari Hiroshi (吉成 弘) committed seppuku to account for not being able to save Prince Wu. Thereafter his body was moved to Korea and was buried in Hongneung Imperial tomb on 15 August, the day the war ended.

Prince Wu of Korea (1912-1945), was the 4th head of Unhyeon Palace and a member of the Imperial family of Korea. He was born the second son of Prince Gang, the fifth son of Emperor Gojong.

At the age of five, he was adopted to be the heir of deceased Prince Jun (or Prince Yeongseon, 永宣君李埈 yeong seon gun i jun), the 3rd head of Unhyeon Palace and the only son of the elder brother of Emperor Gojong, Prince Hui (or Prince Heung, 興親王李熹 heung chin wang i hui or Yi Jaemyeon, Prince Wanheung of Korea, 完興君李載冕 wan heung gun i jae myeon). He was taken to Japan shortly afterwards in pretence of educational purposes.

However, unlike his elder brother, Prince Geon (李鍵 이건 i geon), he maintained his integrity as a Korean, despite his Japanese education. This made him the favourite son of his father, Prince Gang, who himself attempted to escape from Korea to join the exiled Korean Government. He overcame all attempts by the Japanese to marry him off to a minor Japanese noble, and married Lady Park Chan-ju, a granddaughter of Marquis Park Yeong-hyo who was a husband of Princess Yeonghye of Korea. They had two children, Yi Chung (李淸 이청 i cheong) (born 23 April 1936) and Yi Jong (李淙 이종 i jong) (born 9 November 1940 - death).

Prince Wu was forced to serve in the Japanese Army stationed in China. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1930s, he was promoted to Major by 1943 and Lieutenant-Colonel in 1944. While in China, he is reputed to have supported the guerilla resistance movement by exiled Korean and Chinese people. He also supposedly fathered a child with Yu Jung-soon in 1943, the daughter of General Yu Dong-ryul, a minister in Korean Provisional Government in exile. The child, named Yi Chonam, asserted and still asserts the parentage of Prince Wu, though Princess Wu refused to recognise him during her lifetime.

Prince Wu was restationed to Hiroshima in 1945, and on 6 August 1945, he was severely injured by the atomic bomb blast on the way to his office, and died later that day at a medical aid station. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Colonel. After his funeral, Adjutant Lieutenant Colonel Yoshinari Hiroshi (吉成 弘) committed seppuku to account for not being able to save Prince Wu. Thereafter his body was moved to Korea and was buried in Hongneung Imperial tomb on 15 August, the day the war ended.

Princess Deokhye of Korea (25 May 1912 – 21 April 1989) was the last Princess of Korea.

She was born on 25 May 1912 at Changdeok Palace in Seoul. She was the youngest daughter of Emperor Gwangmu and his concubine, Lady Bongnyeong. In 1917, her name was formally entered into the Imperial Family's registry. Her father, Emperor Gwangmu, loved her greatly, and established the Deoksu Palace Kindergarten for her in Jeukjodang, Hamnyeong hall. Girls her age from noble families attended the kindergarten. In 1919, she was secretly engaged to Kim Jang-han, a nephew of Kim Hwangjin (a court chamberlain) and was taken to Japan under the pretense of continuing her studies. Like her brothers, she attended the Gakushuin. In the Spring of 1930, upon the onset of mental illness (manifested by sleepwalking), she moved to King Lee's Palace, her brother Crown Prince Eun's house in Tokyo. Her physician diagnosed her illness as precocious dementia, but by the following year, her condition seemed to have improved.

In May 1931, after "matchmaking" by Empress Teimei, the consort of Emperor Taishō of Japan, she married Count Sō Takeyuki (武志), a Japanese nobleman. She gave birth to a daughter, Masae (正惠) on 14 August 1932. Suffering an unhappy marriage, her grief was compounded by the loss of her only daughter who committed suicide by drowning. After this, her condition deteriorated, and she finally divorced her husband in 1953.

She returned to Korea at the invitation of the Korean government on 26 January 1962. She cried while approaching her motherland, and despite her mental state, accurately remembered the court manners. She lived in Nakseon Hall, Changdeok Palace, with Crown Prince and Princess Eun, their son Prince Gu, his wife Julia Mullock, and Mrs Byeon Bokdong, her lady-in-waiting. She died on 21 April 1989 at Sugang Hall, Changdeok Palace, and was buried at Hongryureung in Namyangju, near Seoul.

Lady Misil (미실, 美室, 540? ~ 600?) is a historical figure of Silla. But her existence is controversial because she is not mentioned in both Samguk Sagi and Samguk Yusa. However, she is a very important figure in the transcription of Hwarang Segi.

According to Hwarang Segi, she was a daughter of Mijinbu, 2nd Leader of Hwarang(Pungweolju). Also her father's mother was Princess Samyup, daughter of Beopheung of Silla. Her mother was Lady Myodo, sister of Sado, the queen consort of King Jinheung. With these relations, Mishil gained the qualification of a noble within the bone rank system.

She became powerful due to her relations with Kings and Poongweoljoos. She was the wife of Sejong, 6th Pungweolju, and was the major royal harem of 3 kings(Jinheung of Silla, Jinji of Silla, Jinpyeong of Silla). Also, she was in love with Prince Dongryun, eldest son of Jinheung, and Seolwon, 7th Pungweolju.

Her power was proved when she persuaded Jingol nobles to expel King Jinji from his throne. And her two sons (Hajong, Bojong) also became 11th, 16th Pungweolju respectively.

In TV drama Queen Seondeok, her role is major opponent of Princess Deokman.
