Jo Gwangjo (Hangul: 조광조; hanja: 趙光祖, 23 August 1482 – 10 January 1520), also often called by his pen name Jeong-am (Hangul: 정암; hanja: 靜庵), was Korean Neo-Confucian scholar who pursued radical reforms during the reign of Jungjong of Joseon in the early 16th century.

He was framed with charges of factionalism by the power elite that opposed his reform measures and was sentenced to drink poison in the Third Literati Purge of 1519. He has been widely venerated as a Confucian martyr and an embodiment of "seonbi spirit" by later generations in Korea. Some historians consider him one of the most influential figures in 16th century Korea. He's one of the 18 Sages of Korea and honored as Munmyo Baehyang.
Jo Gwang-jo was the son of Jo Wongang and was from the Hanyang Jo clan. Jo studied under neo-Confucian scholar Kim Gwoeng-pil, Kim Jong-jik's disciple who was in exile at the time following the First Literati Purge of 1498. When Kim Gwoeng-pil was later executed (by poison) following the Second Literati Purge of 1504, Jo was exiled for being Kim's disciple.

At this time, Joseon Dynasty politics was primarily marked by power struggle between two aristocratic yangban factions - the established "Hungu" power elites who were generally conservative and the upstart Sarim scholars called seonbis, who belonged to neo-Confucian school of Kim Jong-jik and other thinkers. Sarim faction had entered the court politics during the reign of King Seongjong but suffered two bloody purges under his successor Yeonsangun. When Yeonsangun was eventually deposed in 1506, Jungjong was placed on the throne as the eleventh king of Joseon by the Hungu leaders who led the coup. For first ten years of his reign, Jungjong could not truly rule the country with regal authority (he was forced to depose his faithful queen because her father was killed by the coup leaders, and they feared that the queen might take revenge.) However, three main coup leaders died of natural causes by then, and Jungjong began to welcome Sarim scholars to his court to check Hungu faction's power.

Master Jinul (1158-1210) of the Goryeo Kingdom - together with Master Wonhyo of the Silla Kingdom - is one of the two most important figures in the history of Korean Buddhism.

Master Jinul is seen as the founder of the Korean "Seon" (in Japanese, Zen) School and there is ample evidence for the significant influence that he had on important aspects of Korean Buddhist doctrine and practice.

Jinul passed the royal examination for monks at age 24. At that time, the exam was held on a national level as a system for qualifying monks to take up official positions or become abbots of monasteries and temples.
So passing this exam was a gateway to a successful career in the community of Buddhist monks.

Yet, Jinul gave up the career offered to him and joined a Seon community in Boje Temple.
He had entered the Buddhist order at a time of crisis in Korean Buddhism, in terms of doctrinal and philosophical disputes as well as political corruption that had crept into the monastic system.
Thus Jinul established, at Boje Temple, a new movement which he called the "Concentration and Wisdom Community," wherein he encouraged the participants to form "a retreat community dedicated to the development of ’Samadhi’ (concentration) and ’prajna’ (wisdom)."

Herein specific meditation techniques were used to gain concentration, while other specific techniques were applied to gain wisdom.
This is a standard formula in Indian Buddhism and Jinul insisted that both wisdom and concentration must be practiced simultaneously to achieve an awakening.

But Jinul also encouraged the study of Buddhist principles as found in the Buddhist texts (sutras) and sutra commentaries. He insisted that such study was a necessary component of Buddhist cultivation.
He took this stance amidst arguments on the nature of meditation in the community of monks, who were divided between a Seon meditation view and doctrinal and scholastic views.

Thus we see that at this critical juncture Jinul took a middle path and this laid the foundation for the teaching and practice of Korean Seon, which exists to the present day.
Korean Seon is a tradition that integrates the study of sutras and commentaries with strong meditation practice.

One metaphor that he used to express his idea was that of the morning dew and the sunshine. Before the sun rises, the cool morning grass is wet with dew.
One can try but it’s hard to wipe away the dew as it continues to reappear; it seems to be permanent.
However, once the sun rises and one wipes the dew away, it will cease returning; in effect, it is not permanent. In the same way, once one has had an awakening experience, efforts to more fully eradicate negative habits, which is the basis of Buddhist meditation, will be more fruitful.

In 1210, Master Jinul passed away during one of his Dharma talks while holding his staff of office. Afterwards, a pagoda named "Sweet Dew" was constructed to commemorate him and he was posthumously given the title of National Teacher.
Hunnyeon Dogam'in kurulmasını önerdi.
Hunnyeon Dogam'in kurulmasını önerdi.

Yi Su-gwang (1563–1628), also known as Lee Sugwang, was a Korean scholar-bureaucrat, a military official, and a diplomat of the Joseon Dynasty. He was also an academic and an encyclopedist who created Jibong yuseol, the earliest Korean encyclopedia.

Early life: He was born to a wealthy, aristocratic family in 1563, and was offered the finest education his parents could afford. In 1585, he passed the civil service exam and became a military officer.

Military career: In the wake of Seven-Year War, he was stationed in Jogyeong, Gyeongsang province, where he was given command of a small army contingent. He encountered a Japanese expeditionary contingent in Yongin, Gyeonggi province and lost. His superiors restationed him in Eiju, Hamgyong province, where he encountered more Japanese forces. His actions during this period were sufficiently successful for him to be promoted.
In 1614, he would write about his military experience, noting that the Joseon forces had "too many sajok (families of yangban or scholar officials), idlers, vagrants and too few people liable for service." The book is considered to be the foundation of the Silhak school.

Career as an emissary: After the war, he was dispatched as an emissary to the Ming Dynasty. In Ming China, he acquired several books written on Catholicism by an Italian priest, Matteo Ricci, who was living in China at this time. He brought them back to Korea, which was the first time Western literature had been brought into Korea. He took great interest in the Western world. From the research he developed during his three missions to China, he was able to create a 20-volume encyclopedia, with the title Jibong yuseol.
Jibong yuseol contained not only information on Catholicism and China, but also on Japan, Vietnam, and Thailand. It also contained basic information on the Western world, including the geography and weather of England, western food, and western weapons. He also wrote about the knowledge of astronomy that he had acquired from an Italian priest staying in China at the time. He visited China several times, and even met Thai (known then to Koreans as Seomra people) emissaries in China. Taking a great interest in the Thais, he closely recorded the customs of the Thai people. He also had contact with emissaries from Vietnam and the Okinawan Islands.

Government official: When he came back to Korea, he became the high-ranking government official of Ijo (吏曹, Ministry of Personnel), the Ijo Panseo (Hangul: 이조판서). In his later works -Jibong jib (Hangul: 지봉집) and Chaesin Jablock (Hangul: 채신잡록)- he placed less emphasis on Confucianism and emphasized adopting western knowledge to strengthen the nation. His work also dealt with the subject of moderate political and economic reforms to improve the living standards of the peasants, which had deteriorated following the Seven-Year War, and the bureaucracy. He also implemented welfare policies, believing that the Way of Heaven was found among the people and the most noble endeavour was to feed and clothe the poor.

His idea of a welfare state was inspired by both Confucianism and Catholicism. These books were stored in Changsu Seowon (Changsu Confucian Academy) in Suwon, Gyeonggi province.
Those whom he is said to have influenced include the early 17th century thinkers, Yu Hyeong-won (1622-1673) and Yun Jeung (尹拯, 1629-1714).

Life:

Uisang ( 625–702 ) was one of the most eminent early Silla Korean scholar-monks, a close friend of Wonhyo ( 元曉 ).
He traveled to China, studying at Mount Zhongnan as a student of the influential Huayan master Zhiyan ( 智儼 ) and as a senior colleague of Fazang ( 法藏 ), with whom he established a life-long correspondence. He became an expert in Huayan ( 華嚴 ) doctrine and was the founder of the Korean Hwaeom school. Most well-known among his writings is the Hwaeom ilseung peopkye to ( Diagram of the Avataṃsaka Single Vehicle Dharmadhātu ) This is a commentary on his mandala-like diagram haein do ('Ocean Seal'), which consists of 210 Chinese characters that express the essence of the Huayan doctrine. A full translation can be found in the appendix to Odin, 1982.
Little is known of his early life other than his father was named Hin-sin and his family name was Kim.
He is famous for his travel to Táng China with his friend, Wonhyo. At one point they were captured by border guards and held for ten days as suspected spies but were subsequently released and expelled. Late, Wonhyo left Uisang, after unknowingly drinking water from a skull in the dark. The shock of this brought about an enlightenment experience such that he felt it was unnecessary to continue to China in search of wisdom. Dismayed, but nonetheless determined, Uisang continued on his journey eventually reaching China by sea.
A Korean folk story relates how, when he was young, Uisang fell in love with a beautiful girl, Myo Hwa ( "Delicate Flower" ) but she was chosen by the king of Silla to be sent as a gift to the Chinese Emperor thus thwarting their relationship. This turned Uisang to the religious life and he became a monk. Myo Hwa in desperation tried to commit suicide on the journey in China by throwing herself in the river. However, she was rescued and nursed back to health by a family who subsequently adopted her. Many years later she met Uisang on his travels to China but he explained that he was now a monk and could not go back with her to Silla as she wished. However, he said he would visit her when his studies in China were complete. This he did ten years later. Unfortunately, Myo Hwa was not at home so Uisang left her a note and hurried to get his ship back to Silla. Myo Hwa returned and realised she had just missed him and ran down to the sea to try and catch him before he left. The ship however had already left the shore and in desperation she leapt in the water. As she hit the water she was magically transformed into a dragon by the strength of her love and she was able to follow the ship back to Silla.

Safely arrived in Silla, Uisang went on to found Buseoksa, a temple in the Gyeongsangbuk-do ( North Gyeongsang ) mountains. The temple name means "Floating Rock" and is derived from an incident in which Myo Hwa, as a dragon, scares away some bandits by magically raising a bolder into the air. She is said to have transformed herself into a rock to continue protecting the site and her lover, Uisang. ( Story related by Sunin, 1987 )
Uisang is often referred to as the "Temple Builder" because of the number of temples he established or extended during his lifetime.
