English

Dokkaebi is a common word for a type of spirit in Korean folklore or fairy tales.

The Dokkaebi is a mythical being that appears in many old Korean folktales. Although usually frightening, it could also represent a humorous, grotesque-looking sprite or goblin. These creatures loved mischief and playing mean tricks on bad people and they rewarded good people with wealth and blessings. Dokkaebi are described as the transformed spirits of inanimate objects. The most common objects said to become Dokkaebi are usually useful everyday implements that have been abandoned by their owners or left in perpetual disuse, and include such wide-ranging objects as brooms, fireplace pokers, pestles, flails, and sometimes even trees smeared with maiden's blood.

They are different from ghosts (귀신) in that they are not formed by the death of a human being, but rather by the transformation of an inanimate object.

Characteristics
Different versions of the Korean Dokkaebi mythology assign different attributes to them. In some cases they are considered harmless but nevertheless mischievous, usually playing pranks on people or challenging wayward travellers for a ssireum (Korean wrestling) match for the right to pass.

Most Dokkaebi to carry a kind of club or mallet called a dokkaebi bangmang'i (도깨비 방망이). They are like magic wands, from which it can summon anything it wants. Unfortunately, when it gets something by using it, it gets things by "stealing" from someone else, because this bangmang'i can only summon existing things, and it doesn't create objects out of thin air.

Dokkaebi love to play games, especially ssireum as mentioned above. They are extremely good at it and one will never be able to beat them by trying to push them from the left side. However, they are very weak on the right side. In other stories one should hook their leg and push them to win, as they have only one leg.

Dokkaebi can also have a cap which is called dokkaebi gamtu (도깨비 감투). Its most well-known ability is that it gives the wearer invisibility.

Legends
Most Korean legends have Dokkaebi in the stories. They are about Dokkaebi pranking on mortals or punishing them because of their evil deeds. One of them is about an old man who lived alone in a mountain when a Dokkaebi visited his house. With surprise, the kind old man gave the Dokkaebi an alcoholic beverage and they become friends. The Dokkaebi visited the old man often and they had long conversations together, but one day, the man took a walk by himself in the woods near the river and discovered that his reflection looked like the Dokkaebi. With fear, he realized that he was gradually becoming that creature. The man made a plan to prevent himself from becoming a Dokkaebi and invited the creature to his house. He asked, "What are you most afraid of?" and the Dokkaebi answered, "I'm afraid of blood. What are you afraid of?". The man pretended to be frightened and said, "I'm afraid of money. That's why I live in the mountains by myself." The next day, the old man killed a cow and poured its blood all over his house. The Dokkaebi, with shock and great anger, ran away and said, "I'll be back with your greatest fear!" The next day, the Dokkaebi brought bags of money and threw it to the old man. After that, Dokkaebi never came back and the old man became the richest person in the town.

GENERAL ONDAL

Emrine uymayacagim.”

Kral çok sinirlendi ve dedi ki,

“Sen beni dinlemedin. Benim bir kizim yok. Artik bir arada yasayamayiz. Ne istersen onu yap.”

Prenses, kolunda birkaç düzine altin bilezikle sarayi terk etti.

Prenses, Ondal’in evini buldu ve annesine Ondal ile tanismak istedigini söyledi. Ondal’in annesine selamlarini sundu. Ondal’in nerede oldugunu sordu.

Prenses, Ondal’i bulmaya ormana gitti. Ondal’i, agaç kabugu aradigi dagin eteginde buldu. O anda Prenses, kendisinden rahatsizlik duyan Ondal’a evlenme teklif etti. Ondal dedi ki,

“Benden uzak dur. Sakin yanima yaklasma. Sen prenses sekline girmis bir tilki ya da bir cadisin.”

Ondal hemen oradan uzaklasti. Cesareti kirilmamis prenses, onu takip etti. Onun evinin çitlerinin altinda yatti. Sabah olunca Ondal’in evine girdi. Ve fikrini açikladi. Ondal, annesi konusmaya basladiginda hâlâ Prenses’ten kusku duyuyordu.

“Siradan insanlar tarafindan yetistirilmis bir at alma.

Kral YANGKANG’in tahta geçmesinden sonra, Ondal, Kral’a dedi ki,

“SINRA, bizim topraklarimizi ele geçirdi. GUN ve HYEON’a böldü. Insanlarimiz hâlâ topraklarini geri almak istiyor. Orduyu bu konuda seferber etme sözünüzle birlikte topraklarimizi SINRA’dan geri almak istiyorum. “

Ondal The General

During King PYEONGGANG period in GOGURYEO, a funny looking but good hearted man named Ondal lived. He was as poor as poor can be, and begged food for his blind mother. He hung around the neighborhood in rags and worn shoes.Everyone on the street called him Ondal the fool.

Meanwhile, King PYEONGGANG had a daughter who cried a lot. To tease her, the King would say,"You are such a cry baby, and will never make a proper wife for a prince, so I will have to marry you off to Ondal." When Princess PYEONGGANG turned 16, the King arranged for her a marriage with a high official in the royal court, but the princess raised an objection.

"You always said that you would marry me off to Ondal, and now you are breaking your word. Even common people try to keep their words, and what you are trying to do now is beneath your dignity. I cannot obey your order."

The King got furious, and said,

"You don't listen to me, and I don't have a daughter. Now we cannot live together any more, and you might as well do what you please."

The Princess left the palace, with several dozens of gold bracelets on her elbow.

She found her way to Ondal's house, where his blind mother greeted her. She bowed to his mother, and asked Ondal's whereabout. The elderly mother said,

"You smell like a lady, and speak like one. You must be of a noble family, and my son doesn't deserve a lady like you. He was born of such a poor family, and has nothing to eat, so he went into the woods to look for some bark, and is not back home yet."

The princess went out to find Ondal, and ran into him at the base of the mountain where he was looking for bark, and on the spot, she proposed to him, who was offended by her marriage proposal, and said,

"Get away from me. Don't ever come near me. You must be a fox or a witch to act in this manner."

He turned and hurried away. Undiscouraged, the princess followed him, and slept the night under his fence, and the next morning entered his house and explained what's on her mind. Ondal was still suspicious of her and undecided when his mother piped up,

"My son is not so bright as to be the husband of a princess, and our house is so humble that we cannot invite you in.

Now , what shall we do?"

The Princess responded,

" It is not what one has, but what he has that matters.
Wealth and rank has no place in the matter of marriage."

Ondal and his mother could not refuse her any longer, and they decided to live together. The princess sold the gold bracelets she had, and bought a house, paddy fields, a cow and a horse, and housewares, and then asked Ondal to buy a horse, saying,

"Don't buy a horse grown by common people. Buy one from soldiers who try to get rid of weak and scrawny horses. If you can't find such one, buy a healthy looking horse, and exchange it later for a sick one."

Ondal did exactly as he was told, and the princess took good care of the horse, which grew healthier every day.

In GOGURYEO on March 3rd of every year, people gathered at Mt.NAKRANG to hunt boars and deer and offer them to the heaven and the gods of the mountain.

On that day, the King, with all his officials and soldiers, joined the people, On this occassion, Ondal distinguished himself above the crowd by capturing the most animals. The King noticed him and asked his name, and was impressed. Shortly after, Emperor MUJE from HUJU invaded YODONG, and the King fought him in the field of BAESAN. Ondal distinguished himself in the war, and killed dozens of enemies. Others followed him, and they won a victory. Returning in triumph, Ondal was considered the best soldier, and King PYEONGGANG finally recognized him as his legitimate son-in-law, and appointed him to office, and favored him so much that Ondal prospered day after day.

After King YANGKANG acceded to the throne, Ondal said to the King,

"SINRA conquered our territory and divided it into their GUN and HYEON. Our people still want their land back, so with your permission to mobilize the military, I'd like to get our land back from SINRA."

Granted the permission from the King, Ondal left for the battlefield with his soldiers, and swore, "I shall not return unless I get our land back."

Ondal got killed on the battleground, and when the soldiers tried to proceed the funeral, his casket didn't budge a bit until Princess PYEONGGANG came and touched the casket, saying,

"Life and death, it's already decided. So, may you rest peacefully now."

The King cried out loud over this sad story.

Prenses cevapladi,

“Ev birinin sahip olacagi bir sey degildir. Ama o sahip olmasi gerekenlere sahip.

Zenginlik ve mevkinin, evlilikle ilgili konularda yeri yoktur.”

Ondal ve annesi onu daha fazla reddedemediler. Birlikte yasamaya karar verdiler.

The Coming of Humankind
There were four Heavenly Men guarding each cardinal direction of the fortress, and they were Cheong-gung 청궁 (靑穹), Hwang-gung 황궁 (黃穹) who were children of Gunghwee, and Hukso 흑소(黑巢), Baekso 백소(白巢)who were children of Sohwee. They in turn married the four Heavenly Women, and gave birth to twelve children, who would become the ancestors of the humans.

These ancestors were pure and were have said to drink from Earth's Milk 지유 (地乳), which came from a spring inside the castle. They could speak without making sounds, and act without seeing and never died. Thus they lived for ten thousand years undisturbed.

Then there came a time when the number of people became too large. There was not enough of Earth's Milk (or "Jiyu") to go around for everyone. Because of this, a man from the line of Baekso 백소 (白巢) by the name of Jiso 지소 (支巢) decided to cede his meal of Earth's Milk five times to his neighbours (other versions say that he waited in line but the line was so long he never got his turn). Eventually his hunger grew intolerable, and deciding to kill himself he headed towards a cliff, where he saw a grape vine growing in the edges. Unable to suppress his hunger, he ate the grapes and immediately acquired the five tastes of sourness, bitterness, spiciness, sweetness, and saltiness. This is known as the Incident of the Five Tastes (오미의 변).

Jiso 지소 (支巢) returned to his people and told them of his discovery. Soon however, those who ate from these grapes began to grow teeth. From the teeth spewed a saliva that turned into venom. This was because they had eaten another living thing in order to stay alive.

Soon they were able to see, but were no longer able to hear the heavens. Their skin became coarse, their feet heavy, and they were no longer pure. They gave birth to many animal-resembling children and their lifespans began to shrink.

There eventually came a point when the people of Magosung 마고성 (麻姑城) began blaming Jiso (지소) for the transformation, and he along with his family and all those who had eaten the grapes were forced to leave Magosung 마고성 (麻姑城).

As the line of Jiso was leaving, however, Hwang-gung (황궁:黃穹, one of the four guardians and a direct ancestor of the Korean people) tried to encourage them by saying that if they could recover their pure nature, they would be free of their misery.

Upon hearing this, the people became convinced that the only way to become pure once more was to drink from Earth's Milk again. They then stormed the castle and overwhelmed it, razing the fortress to its foundations in order to reveal the source of the spring that had given them Earth's Milk. The spring, however, began to flow in all directions and thereafter the milk turned into inedible earth, leaving not only the original perpetrators but all the former inhabitants of the now destroyed castle to starve.

Soon thereafter there ensued a massive famine, and everyone was reduced to devouring not only grapes, but all sorts of plants and even animals in an attempt to satiate their hunger. Of them only Hwang-gung 황궁 (黃穹) came forth to Mago 마고 (麻姑) and begged her for forgiveness. He swore he would not rest until mankind could recover its pure nature. From her he obtained the Three Heavenly Heirlooms, and great knowledge. He then called together all the people of the earth, taught them agriculture, and gave each clan leader a Heavenly Heirloom and then sent them off in different directions to people the earth.

Korean Myth: Tangun

The history of Korea is 5000 years old.
The Korean people formed their own nation with a single race.
In B.C.2333, they created their own territory in a peninsula far east.
Um. . . how about us beginning the story now.

It happened a long long time ago. . .
The heavens were ruled by King Hwan-In.
He had a son named, Hwan-Woong.
Hwan-Woong often looked down below, to observe the people living on the land.
But the sight only made him sigh with worry.
One day the King asked his son,
"My son, why do you look so anxious, you are the prince of the heavens and soon you will inherit my kingdom. What is there to worry about?"

Hwan-Woong replied,
"Father, I have seen how the people live on the land and I see that they are becoming more and more deceiving. Such a sight upsets me. Permit to descend down, so that I can help these people, father."

And he pleaded sincerely.
On hearing his plea, the king was proud of his son. Yet at the same time he felt wistful and sad.
Nevertheless, Hwan-Woong was granted his wish from the heavens. And he landed on the most important spot of all, in the east - the land that is known as Korea today.
When he came down, he brought the wind, cloud and the rain gods with him. Along with 3000 subordinates.
The King Hwan-In gave his son the rights of heaven together with his blessing.
The rights of heaven is like a treasured world stamp given by the king.
Hwan-Woong formed the capital city near Shin-Dan-Su and named it Shin-Si.
His reign on the land, encouraged the disappearance of fights and all bad things that had existed before. The animals too became very docile.
One day, a tiger and a bear came to Hwan-Woong.

Why?

They wanted to become humans.
Hwan-Woong carefully explained to them that it would require immense patience and that the experience would be too harsh and draining.
Yet the tiger and the bear remained reluctant to submit. They told Hwan-Woong that they could sustain any kind of pain if only it meant that they could become human beings.
He thought for a while. Then he gave the tiger and the bear twenty garlic pieces and a bunch of crown daisies each.

"Eat these and pray to the gods for a hundred days. You must pray with all your heart. You are not allowed to see daylight for the hundred days. Do you understand?"

The tiger and the bear walked into a cave, contented, with the thought of becoming a human.
For a few days, they prayed to the gods, eating only garlic and the crown daisies. They prayed, "Gods above, please hear my prayer. Let be become a human being."

Few more days passed by.

Let us peep inside to see what the two of them are doing. . .

Tiger: I am so hungry that I think I am going crazy!
Bear: Gods above hear my plea, let me be a human being.
Tiger: How can you pray in these conditions! Do you have enough strength left to ask to be
granted with your wish? What's the point, we are going to die anyway!
Bear: Hear my prayer, let me become a human being.
Tiger: Dear bear! I cannot stand this any longer!
Are you going to continue praying like an idiot?!
Bear: I know that we will be granted with our wish. Please be patient, tiger.
You can become a human, it just takes some time. . .
Tiger: Dear bear, you do it. I cannot go on like this any longer.
I am leaving you. Goodbye!
Bear: Gods in heaven, let me bec. . ome. . .a . . .Tiger! Tiger! Come back!

The tiger left without being able to sustain the hardship of becoming a human being.

Now what about the bear, let us turn back, once again, to the scene.

Bear: (With tears rolling down its face) How can you leave like this, tiger. . .

The bear is feeling very sad. Oh no!
Minutes later,

Bear: Tiger could not do it, but I must go on till the end.

Twenty days passed.
All the hairs on the bear's body, began to fall off gradually.

At long last, one hundred days passed!
Something strange was beginning to happen inside the cave.
The bear was transformed into a woman. And a beautiful one too!
Hwan-Woong named this beautiful woman Woong-Nyo.
And he married her.
Do you think that this is a little strange?
Hwan-Woong must have respected Woong-Nyo's patience and became attracted to her her beauty and her kindness.
Anyway, they wed and they lived happily ever after.

Beni sirtinda derenin diger tarafina götür.'' dedi.

Yasli adam memnuniyetle kabul etti. Sirtina binmesine izin verdi ve dereyi geçmeye basladi. Genç alim yasli adama '' Do San Suwon a giden yolu biliyormusun? diye sordu. (Bu Lee Whang'in özel okulu) Yasli adam ''evet'' diye cevap verdi.

''Ozaman Lee Whang'i da biliyorsundur?''
''Elbette, çok iyi bilirim. ''
Genç alim ''nerden biliyorsun?" diye sormaya devam etti. Yasli adam kirisik yüzündeki sevinçle parlayan gülümsemeyle cevapladi. ''Ben Lee Whang'im.'' dedi.

Bu genç alimin ne hissettigini düsünebiliyor musun? Yildirim çarpmis gibi hissetti. O kadar utandi ki ne diyecegini bilemedi. Genç adam, sirtindan inmek için Lee Whang'a yalvardi. Ama Lee Whang ''dereyi geçene kadar sirtimda kalabilirsin'' diyerek sakince dereyi geçmeye devam etti. Onu derenin diger kiyisina tasidi.
