As Chuseok is a celebration of harvest and abundance, Koreans have spent the holiday period with various entertainment and folk games such as samulnori (traditional percussion quartette), talchum (mask dance), ganggangsullae (Korean circle dance), and ssireum (traditional Korean wrestling). Ganggangsullae is performed during Chusoek or Jeongwol Daeboreum (celebration of 15th day of the first lunar calendar). In this dance, women dressed in hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) join hands in a circle and sing together on the night of the first full moon and on Chuseok. There are several stories about its origin. One of the most well-known story says that the dance dates back to the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) when the Korean army used to dress the young women of the village in military uniforms and had them circle the mountains to give off the appearance that the Korean military was greater in number than it actually was from the enemy side. The Korean army enjoyed many victories thanks to this scare tactic. Ssireum, another significant traditional entertainment, is a one-on-one wrestling match held on a circular sand pit that requires strength and skills.
The word literally means ‘Chicken fight’ so you might think it refers to cockfighting, but in this case it is a form of play done by holding one leg up with an arm while hopping around on the other leg trying to knock one’s opponent down, and it makes you look like a chicken. Some say it originated in ssireum (씨름).
Dakssaum, then involves two or more people holding their legs up either by holding one foot or pant leg in close to their body, then trying to knock down the opponents with the leg in the air with the whole body. You’re not allowed to grab an opponent, push an opponent, or let go of your leg, and you can’t switch legs either, no matter how tired the one doing the jumping may become.
While maintaining your balance you might try to maneuver under an opponents’ leg and make a lifting motion with yours so as to knock him over, or you might do the opposite and push down hard on the leg he is holding on to make him lose balance.
You lose if you all or release you arms to catch your fall, whether you fall completely or not. Sometimes people draw circles on the ground and place one foot in the circle while raising one in the air, try to push over an opponent using both hands. You lose if you fall over or allow the foot that was in the air to touch the ground.
It’s all a fun game you can do without any props while you build physical strength and your balancing skills, and practice your responsiveness and resourcefulness. It isn’t as easy as it looks to stand this way, and it’s even harder to try to knock someone down without falling over yourself.
These days it is mostly enjoyed by elementary school students. For them it is both fun and a way to cultivate a sense of balance.
During the holiday a variety of traditional foods are eaten and an equally large number of games are played as well. Among these one of the most prominent is jegichagi. Jegichagi is a game similar to hacky sack in which a shuttlecock, made of coins wrapped in paper with feathers attached, must be kept in the air using nothing but one’s feet. Legend states that the game developed from young martial artists’ training that involved kicking small leather pouches. The game is generally played with four people. They pass the shuttlecock from each other in order of the cardinal directions from north to east to west to south. If a person allows the shuttlecock to hit the ground that person is eliminated. And then the game proceeds until there is only one person remaining. Creating shuttlecocks can also be a fun activity, but for the less adventurous they are available at most school supply stores.
