The station opened in 1962 and KTX trains on the Gyeongbu Line began services on April 1, 2004, shortly after the completion of the new building earlier that year.

Services
Daejeon Station serves all KTX trains on the Gyeongbu Line. It also has express services and local services on the normal speed Gyeongbu Line. The station is served by the Daegu Line, a short line which connects to the Jungang Line, and also by the Daegu Subway. (The overground railway and subway stations are not connected directly: the Subway Line 1 station entrance lies in a park close by the railway station.) Dongdaegu has thus become the chief station for Daegu, surpassing Daegu Station.

Orijinal adı 1900 yılında Namdaemun ("Güney Kapısı ") İstasyonu idi., 1910 yılında adı Gyeongseong (Japonca’da “Keijo”) İstasyonu olarak değistirildi. Günümüzdeki istasyon binasının tasarımı Japon tasarımcı Tsukamoto Yasushi (Tokyo Kraliyet Fakültesi’nin profesörü)’ye aittir. İnşaat 1922 yılında başladı ve 1952’te bitti. Yer altında inşaa edilen zeminle bitti.

İstasyon binasının birinci katında bir bekleme odası, bir VIP (önemli kişi) odası vardır. İkinci katında bir restoran ve yer altı katında da bürolar vardır. Ana bekleme salonu üzerinde “Byzantinesque “ adı verilne bir kubbe vardır. bir bekleme odasından dayanır (1inci fl.) Bir VIP odası, bir lokanta (2inci fl.) Ve ofisler (Yeraltinda olan fl.). Ana bekleme odasının üzerinde bir Byzantinesque kubbesi vardır.

Originally called by Namdaemun ("South Gate") Station in 1900, this railroad station changed the name into Gyeongseong (or "Keijo" in Japanese) Station in 1910. The current station building was designed by a Japanese designer, Tsukamoto Yasushi, professor of Tokyo Imperial College, and constructed under the supervision of the Board of Rail Transportation, Governor-General of Joseon. The construction, started in 1922 and completed in 1925, resulted in a two-story building with an underground floor (6,631㎡).

The building consists of a waiting room (1st fl.), a VIP room, a restaurant (2nd fl.) and offices (underground fl.). There is a Byzantinesque dome over the main waiting room. Basically a steel-concrete structure, its characteristic features includes the use of bricks and rusticated stone blocks for the walls and corners as well as steel truss and natural slates with copper plates for the roof.

This is one of the two grandest buildings built in the Western style, the other being the building of Governor-General of Joseon, with which Japanese colonialists wanted to display their power and ability to secure an effective colonial rule. The name of the building was changed to Seoul Railroad Station in 1946, but much of the building was badly damaged during the Korean War including the large ceiling window. In 1958, a new waiting room was attached to the building for Saemaeul-ho passengers, and in 1988 the "Overpass Waiting Terminal" was completed.
