Steven Holl Architects, Spirit of Space ile birlikte Haziran ayında Güney Kore, Seoul’de Daeyang Galeri ve Evinde 2 kısa film çekti.

Projenin açılış kutlamasında çekilen ‘A Conversation with Steven Holl’ dizayn ilhamını açıklarken Steven Holl’u bahsedilen mekanda gösteriyor. 'Daeyang Gallery and House' adlı iki filmin ikincisi; ışık, materyal ve detay yoluyla projeyi inceliyor.

Steven Holl Architects in collaboration with Spirit of Space has created two short films on the Daeyang Gallery and House, completed in June in Seoul, South Korea.

Filmed during the project's opening celebration, 'A Conversation with Steven Holl' presents Steven Holl on site as he explains the design inspiration. The second of the two films, entitled 'Daeyang Gallery and House', explores the project through its use of light, material and detail.

Inspired by a 1967 sketch for a music score by composer Istvan Anhalt called 'Symphony of Modules', the gallery and house is a composition in sequential movement. Three pavilions - one for entry, one residence, and one event space - appear to push upward from a continuous gallery level below. A reflecting pool, which simultaneously separates and connects the pavilions, establishes the plane of reference from above and below.

The red and charcoal stained wood interiors of the pavilions are activated by skylight strips of clear glass that are cut into the roof. Sunlight turns and bends around the inner spaces, animating them with the changing light of each season and throughout the day. Like a cesura in music, strips of glass lenses in the base of the pool break through the surface, bringing dappled light to the white plaster walls and white granite floor of the gallery below.

Exteriors are a rain screen of custom patinated copper, which ages naturally within the landscape. The Daeyang Gallery and House is heated and cooled with geothermal wells.
Steven Holl Architects, Spirit of Space ile birlikte Haziran ayında Güney Kore, Seoul’de Daeyang Galeri ve Evinde 2 kısa film çekti.

Projenin açılış kutlamasında çekilen ‘A Conversation with Steven Holl’ dizayn ilhamını açıklarken Steven Holl’u bahsedilen mekanda gösteriyor. 'Daeyang Gallery and House' adlı iki filmin ikincisi; ışık, materyal ve detay yoluyla projeyi inceliyor.

The new Chungwoon University Library needed to incorporate multiple functions including a conventional library program along with an exhibition hall, lecture hall, president room, chairman of the board room, and typical office space. The architects therefore approached the library design with the outlook that this would be the heart of the university. With a south facing mountain view, various levels of natural light, fresh air, and landscape views help create an environment conducive to reading and researching. The large sloped sight was nicely integrated into the new built environment with multiple stepped terraces.
These days almost everyone lives in monotonous apartment blocks in Korea, and the lack of sequence and repose in space may cause people to lose their sense of time and imagination. The house offers multiple spatial layers of traditional space that create very interesting sequences, as a front door leads to a small public garden, another middle to a bigger private garden, and so on. Moreover, a shoulder-high stone wall creates another level of spatial relationship with visual connection but without physical separation.
Urban Proposal/Art Piece, 2008
'BIG INABA MAD MASS'
Modern Sanat Gyeonggi Müzesi, Ansan, Güney Kore
Fibreglass, Plastik, LED aydınlatma
278 (Y) x 247 (G) x 234 (D) (cm)

'BIG INABA MAD MASS'
Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Ansan, South Korea
Fibreglass, Plastic, LED Lighting
278 (H) x 247 (W) x 234 (D) (cm)

This project aims to promote urban intelligence. It exists at two different scales: urban scale and furniture scale, public and private, conceptual and real. Inspired by the beautiful natural landscape of Ansan, the project seeks to create something artificial and intelligent in response. At the urban scale, this project proposes a cultural centre for Ansan. This building will represent the brain and imagination of the city, a place to celebrate and develop ideas across every intellectual discipline, from religious to artistic and scientific thought.

The building is organized as a cultural pyramid in a natural shape. Larger facilities, such as lecture halls, cathedrals and galleries, occupy the base of the building, grouped in order to mirror the patterns of the human brain: rational, mathematical facilities are located in one section of the structure, whilst intuitive, imaginative disciplines occupy the other. Smaller, more intimate learning environments are scattered above and between them, creating many opportunities for unexpected encounters, and the synthesis of new ideas across intellectual boundaries. At the very top of the tentacles, Inspiration Pods can be found. Suspended high above the noise, pollution and commercialism of the city, these are the ‘minds’ of the building. Offering a clear, objective view of the city and culture below, the pods provide the perfect environment for students and visitors to think.
After Korea gained independence from Japan in 1945, the former president Lee Seungman and his wife lived in their house called Ihwajang. Even though he moved out of the house after he was elected the first president of Korea, he used to return and visit for walks in the garden. After he relinquished his appointment as president, he stayed here for a while before coming to America as an exile. Jogakdang, the president’s office area, is a small and narrow building but it is an important historical place where he had a conference to form the first Korean ministry. Ihwajang house shows the change of Korean traditional house under Japanese control.
