Korean New Year, commonly known as Seollal (Hangul: 설날; RR: Seollal; MR: Sǒllal), is the first day of the lunar Korean calendar. It is the most important of the traditional Korean holidays. It consists of a period of celebrations, starting on New Year's Day. The Korean also celebrate solar New Year's Day on January 1 each year, following the Gregorian Calendar. The Korean New Year holidays last three days, and is considered a more important holiday than the solar New Year's Day. [1]

The term "Seollal" generally refers to Eum-nyeok Seollal (음력설날, lunar new year), also known as Gujeong (Hangul: 구정; Hanja: 舊正). Less commonly, "Seollal" also refers to Yang-nyeok Seollal (양력설날, solar new year), also known as Sinjeong (Hangul: 신정).

Korean New Year generally falls on the day of the second new moon after winter solstice, unless there is a very rare intercalary eleventh or twelfth month in the lead-up to the New Year. In such a case, the New Year falls on the day of the third new moon after the solstice (next occurrence will be 2033). Korean New Year is generally the same day as Mongolian New Year, Tibetan New Year, Chinese New Year and Vietnamese New Year.

Seollal (Lunar New Year; January 1 in lunar calendar) is one of the most celebrated national holidays in Korea. While many observe Sinjeong (Solar New Year; January 1 in solar/regular calendar), most celebrate Seollal, which usually lasts for three days: the day of, the day before, and the day after. This year, Seollal falls on January 23 in regular calendar.

More than just a holiday to mark the beginning of a new year, Seollal is truly a special occasion for the Korean people. Not only is it a time for paying respect to ancestors, but it is also an opportunity to catch up with other family members. Then, it is not unusual to see people in beautiful hanbok (traditional clothes) performing ancestral rites or playing folk games, to eat delicious traditional foods, and to hear stories and chatters well into the night.

Seollal demands a lot of preparation, especially in terms of gifts, traveling, and food. As there are many things to purchase for the ancestral rites and gifts, it is usually very crowded in department stores and markets during the days leading up to Seollal. The main dish for Seollal is tteokguk (rice cake soup), with other representative dishes being galbijjim (braised short ribs), japchae (glass noodles with sautéed vegetables), pancakes, hangwa (traditional sweets and cookies), as well as a dozen other side dishes made with various kinds of fresh vegetables, meat and fish.

Another crucial part of preparing for Seollal, especially for those far from home, is travel arrangements. Many choose to travel by train, and reserve tickets well in advance in order to avoid heavy traffic on the roads that can often double standard travel time. Since many people who are away from their homes want to visit their families at the same time, reserving tickets during Seollal is not easy, resulting in many people traveling by car or bus. As most people are trying to leave big cities to visit their family, a recent trend has developed where more parents are visiting their children living in the larger cities as it is more convenient and less crowded. Either way, the journey home during Seollal can be just as exciting as it is stressful.

What are some popular Seollal gifts?

The most popular Seollal gifts are department store gift cards and cash. Popular gifts for parents are ginseng, honey, health products, and massage chairs. Other common gifts include toiletries such as shampoo, soap, toothpaste, etc. and gift baskets/sets composed of Spam, tuna, hangwa, dried fish or fruits.

How do people prepare food for the ancestral rites?

Food during Seollal is taken very seriously. Families spend the entire day before Seollal preparing food to be used as offerings to ancestors as well as to be served to the family. Many Koreans believe that the taste and appearance of ritual foods determines their ancestors' level of satisfaction, and thus prepare them with great care. While food preparation has traditionally been the job of the women in the family, more families today divide up the responsibilities among their members equally or simply hire holiday catering services.

The morning of Seollal begins with an ancestral rite. Family members, each dressed in a brand new hanbok (traditional clothes), gather in front of the ritual table, and set it with an ancestral tablet and dishes of ritual foods according to the laws of ancestral rites.

Güney Kore'nin resmi Bagimsizlik Günü, Agustos'un 15'inde kutlanir, buna ragmen bagimsizligin asil günü 13 Agustos 1948'dir. Güney Koreli'ler Japonya'dan bagimsizliklarini elde edemediklerinde resmi tarih 15 Agustos 1945 idi. 13 Agustos 1948 tarihinde Güney Kore tamamen bagimsiz oldu. Ülkenin ilk baskani Seung-man siyasal nedenlerden dolayi Güney Kore'nin Bagimsizlik Günü'nü 13'ün yerine 15 Agustos'u seçti.

The official Independence Day of South Korea is celebrated on 15th August, though the actual day of independence was on August 13th 1948. The official date which is 15th August, 1945 was not the day the South Koreans attained final autonomy from Japan. It was only on 13th August, 1948, that South Korea was fully liberated from any sort of outside administration. For political reasons, first President of the country I Seung-man, chose 15th August, instead of 13th as the official Independence Day of South Korea.

The Independence Day of South Korea commemorates the freedom from decades of Japanese occupation and the formation of the South Korean republic. Subsequent to the 1905 Taft-Katsura agreement, the Japanese took control of Korea in the year 1910. They restricted the political freedom of the Koreans and also took control over the Korean economic and communications systems. The Japanese further attempted to assimilate the people of Korea into their culture.
In Korea the birthday of Buddha is celebrated according to the Lunisolar calendar. This day is called 석가탄신일 (Seokga tansinil), meaning "the day of Buddha's birthday" or 부처님 오신 날 (Bucheonim osin nal) meaning "the day when Buddha arrived". Lotus lanterns cover the entire temple throughout the month which are often flooded down the street. On the day of Buddha's birth, many temples provide free meals and tea to all visitors. The breakfast and lunch provided are often sanchae bibimbap.
Constitution Day (제헌절) in South Korea is held on July 17, the day that the Korean Constitution was proclaimed in 1948. July 17 was decided on as the Korean constitution day on October 1, 1948 when the law on public holidays of the country (국경일에 관한 법률) was put into force. This was three years after the defeat of Japan in World War II and after the first democratic elections and selection of members for the National Assembly. Soon after, the First Republic of South Korea was formally established on August 18.

Beginning in 2008, Constitution Day in South Korea will no longer be a day off for workers though still a day of commemoration; Arbor Day (식목일) in South Korea has also been removed as a day off along with the restructuring of the public sector with a 40-hour work week.
There are no special activities that citizens are required to attend on Constitution Day, but activities such as marathons are often held.

Korean Lunar New Year / Seollal / 설날 - Kore Ay Takvimine Göre Yeni Yıl

Kameri yılın ilk ayının ilk günü kutlanır. Ulusal kutlama günü değildir. Bayraklar kaldırılmaz. Üç gün tatil olur. "Seol(설)" , Shinjeong (신정), veya "Gujeong(구정)" olarak da bilinir. Kameri Kore takviminin ilk günüdür. En önemli geleneksel tatil günlerinden biridir. Güneş takvimi yeni yılından çok daha önemlidir.

2008 yılında 7 Şubat'’a
2009 yılında 26 Ocak'’a
2010 yılında 14 Şubat'a
2011 yılında 3 Şubat'’a
2012 yılında 23 Ocak'a

Read on to discover some of the highlights of Seollal.
Çin’in kullandigi Hanja karakterleri ögrenmek bir hayli zordu...

Hangul Day — also called Hangul Proclamation Day or Korean Alphabet Day — is a Korean national commemorative day marking the invention and the proclamation of hangul (한글), the native alphabet of the Korean language, by King Sejong the Great. It is observed on October 9 in South Korea and on January 15 in North Korea. In North Korea, the day is called Chosun-gul Day.

According to the Sejong Sillok (세종실록;世宗實綠), King Sejong proclaimed publication of Hunmin Jeongeum (훈민정음;訓民正音), the document introducing the newly created alphabet which was also originally called by the same name, in the ninth month of the lunar calendar in 1446. In 1926, the Hangul Society celebrated the octo-sexagesimal (480th) anniversary of the declaration of hangul on the last day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar, which is on November 4 of the Gregorian calendar. Members of the Society declared it the first observance of "Gagyanal (가갸날)". The name came from "Gagyageul (가갸글)", an early colloquial name for hangul, based on a mnemonic recitation beginning "gagya geogyeo (가갸거겨)". The name of the commemorative day was changed to "Hangullal" in 1928, soon after the term "hangul," coined originally in 1913 by Ju Si-gyeong, became widely accepted as the new name for the alphabet. The day was then celebrated according to the lunar calendar.

In 1931, the celebration of the day was switched to October 29 of the Gregorian calendar. In 1934, arose the claim that they must assume that the Julian calendar was used in 1446, so the date was again changed to October 28.

The discovery in 1940 of an original copy of the Hunmin Jeongeum Haerye, a volume of commentary to the Hunmin Jeongeum that appeared not long after the document it commented upon, revealed that the Hunmin Jeongeum was announced during the first ten days (sangsun; 상순; 上旬) of the ninth month. The tenth day of the ninth month of 1446 of the lunar calendar in 1446 was equivalent to October 9 of the Julian calendar. After the South Korean government was established in 1945, Hangul Day was declared as a legal holiday to be marked on October 9, on which governmental workers are excused from work.

Its legal status as a holiday was removed in 1991 because of pressure from major employers to increase the number of working days, along with the introduction of the Korean United Nations Day. However, Hangul Day still retains a legal status as a national commemoration day. The Hangul Society has campaigned to restore the holiday's former status, but with little impact.

North Korea celebrates the equivalent Chosŏn'gŭl Day on January 15 to mark the day in 1444 (1443 in lunar calendar), which is believed to be that of the actual creation of Hunmin Jeongeum.
