Wonju Şehri, Kore yarımadasının merkezinde ve Gangwon Eyaleti’nin güneybatısında yer alır. Gangwon’un en kalabalık şehridir. Seoul’un yaklaşık 90 mil (40 kilometre) doğusunda yer alır ve başkente otobüs veya trenle 1.30 saat içerisinde ulaşılır. Yarımadanın kuzeyi ve güneyi boyunca uzanan, Baekdudaegan’ın önemli bir parçası olan Taebaek Dağları’nın batısında bulunur.

Wonju’nun doğusunda Yeongwol ve Pyeongchang ilçeleri bulunur. Batısında ise Gyeonggi Eyaleti’nin Yeoju ve Yangpyeong ilçeleri bulunur. Sınırları kuzeyde Hoengseong ilçesi ve Güneyde Chungju ve Jecheon şehirleridir.

Wonju, 2 eyalet ile komşudur; Namhan ve Seom nehirleri Wonju ile Gyeonggi’nin Yeoju ilçesi arasında sınır olarak belirlenmiştir. Namhan Nehri ve Ungyecheon, Chungcheongbuk’un Chungju şehri ile bölüştürülmüştür.

Wonju’da Seoul ve pek çok yerden öğrenci çeken 3 büyük üniversite vardır. Bunlar, yıl boyunca müzik ve spor etkinliğine ev sahipliği yapmaya olanak sağlar. Ayrıca Wonju Kore’nin en büyük basketbol takımlarına da ev sahipliği yapar ve oyunlara çok uygun fiyatlarla katılmak mümkün. Kore Savaşı sırasında 3 önemli muharebelerden biri buradaydı.

Şehirde E-Mart’ın yanı sıra 3 tane sinema (Cinus, Lotte, and Primus) ve çoğu dükkan ve mağazalara –hepsi olmasa bile moda– ev sahipliği yapar.
Wonju’da birçok turistik yer vardır: Chiaksan National Park, Chiaksan Natural Forest Resort, Korea International Walking Festival, Hanji Festival, New Full Moon Festival vb.

Wonju’da şehre su sağlayan 2 nehir vardır; Taegi Dağı’ndan başlayan Seom Nehri ve Odae Dağı’ndan kaynak alan Nahmhan Nehri.

Wonju-si is located in the center of the Korean peninsula and southwest of Gangwon-do province. It is on the western side of the Taebaek Mountains, which are a major part of Baekdudaegan, stretching along the peninsula north and south.

East of Wonju-si is Yeongwol-gun and Pyeongchang-gun and west of the city is Yeoju-gun and Yangpyeong-gun of Gyeonggi-do province. It borders Hoengseong-gun to North and Chungju-si and Jecheon-si to South.

Wonju-si neighbors two other provinces: Namhan and Seom River define the border between Wonju-si and Yeoju-gun of Gyeonggi-do province. Namhan-gang River and Ungyecheon partitioned the city from Chungju-si of Chungcheongbuk-do.

Wonju is a city approximately 90 miles (140 km) east of Seoul and the capital can be reached within 1hr 30minutes by bus or train. Wonju is home to three major universities which attract many students from Seoul and elsewhere. They provide facilities to host sporting and musical events throughout the year. Wonju is also home to one of Korea's top basketball teams and games can be attended at very reasonable prices. It was the site of three crucial battles during the Korean War.
The city has an E-mart, as well as three movie theaters (Cinus, Lotte, and Primus) and a host of shops and outlets for most, if not all, fashions.

Geography & culture:
Wonju-si has two rivers supplying water to the city: the Seom River starts from Taegisan Mountain, and the Namhan River stems from Odaesan. Wonju is in a generally flat area, but with numerous low hills. The city is blessed with great cultural heritage and many tourist attractions including Chiaksan National Park and Gangwongamyeong.
