Tongunjeong
Samgaksan’da Aprokgang’ın yanı sıra kuzeybatıda Sekiz Muhteşem Manzara’sı olan Uiju büyük bir köşktür. Birkaç açıya hâkimdir. Köşkte Aprokgang’ı gören tarafa bakarsak, Mançurya bölgesindeki Guunseong’u ve Oryeongsan’ı görebiliriz. 1592 Japon işgali sırasında, Kral Seonjo buraya sığındı ve Ming Hanedanlığı takviyelerini bekledi.
Kore ordusuna yardıma gelen General, Kral’ı gördü ve ufak tefek bu Kral’ın kendi hizmetine layık olmadığı kanaatine vardı. Ordusunu toplayıp geri döneceği sırada Kral’ın haykırdığını duydu. Öyle gür haykırıyordu ki Komutan etkilendi. Kral’ın ufak tefek görünüşünün altında soğukkanlı asalete sahip biri olduğunu düşündü. Ülkesine dönmekten vaz geçip Kore ordusuna yardım etti.
O kadar ufak bir Kral nasıl bu kadar gür haykırabildi? Tebaadan biri Kral’ın niyetini anladı, onu köşke çıkmaya ve sesin tonajını artıracak bir fıçıya bağırmaya ikna etti. Sonradan kralın bağırdığı bu köşke TongGeokJeong dendi. Tonggok bağırmak, çığlık atmak anlamına gelir. TongGokJeong ise yüksek sesle bağırdığı köşktür.
Sino-Japon Savaşı ve Rus-Japon Savaşı sırasında, Mançurya’ya saldırmakta olan Japon Ordusu karargâhını daima bu merkeze kurdu. Çing’den ve Rus ordusundan ateşlenen kurşunlar köşkün sütunlarına isabet etti, izler hâlâ görülebilmektedir.
Tonggokjeong köşke verilen isimdi çünkü hem Kore ordusu hem de Japon ordusu şavaş zamanlarında karargahlarını oraya kurarlardı.
Tongguk, orduyu komuta etmek demektir.

Tongunjeong
On SAMGAKSAN beside APROKGANG near UIJU is a large pavilion, which belongs to the Eight Great Sceneries in the Northwest. It commands a fine view. Looking across APROKGANG on the pavilion, we can see GUUNSEONG and ORYEONGSAN in Manchuria. During the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, King SEONJO took refuge here and waited for the reinforcements from the Ming Dynasty.
The general, who came to aid Korean army, saw the King and judged that he was such a small figure with unseemly appearance that he did not deserve his service. He was about to turn his army and return to his country when he heard the King crying. It was so loud that he was impressed and decided that despite his small, unseemly figure the King possessed dignity required of a King. He stopped his army from returning to his country and helped the Korean army.
How did the King with such a small figure cry so loudly? One of his vassals noticed the general's intention, and urged the King to step on the pavilion and cry into a large vat, which amplified the sound. Later the pavilion was named TONGGOKJEONG, as the King cried there. TONGGOK is cry or wail in English. TONGGOKJEONG is the pavilion on which the King cried loudly.
During the Sino-Japanese war and Russia-Japanese war, the Japanese Army, which was attacking Manchuria, set up its headquarter on this pavilion each time. The bullets fired from the Ching and Russian army hit the pillars of the pavilion, which still carry the bullet marks.
TONGGOKJEONG was a name given to the pavilion, because it was where the Korean army and the Japanese army established their war-headquarters in time of war.
TONGGUK means 'command the army' in English.
