The Widow's Castle / Dulun Kalesi
Sunchang’dan Damyang’a giderken yol kenarında bir kale vardır. Bu kalenin inşasının ardında hüzünlü bir hikaye vardır. Sunchang’ta soyadı Shin olan bir kadın, evleneli çok olmadan kocasını yitirmiş. İnsanlar ona dul Shin dermiş. Shin, iyi bir aileden gelen hoşça biriymiş. Diğer gençlerin aksine tekrar evlenmemeye, kocasına sadık kalmaya karar vermiş. O civarlarda, karısını kaybetmiş yalnız yaşayan Park adında değerli bir bilge varmış.
Park, bir çöpçatan aracılığıyla Shin’e evlenme teklif etmiş ancak Shin bu teklifi şiddetle reddetmiş. Park, çevresi tarafından saygı gören nüfuzlu bir adammış. Ancak onun otoritesi bu genç dula tesir etmemiş. Fikrini değiştirip başka bir dulu eşi yapmak istemiş; ancak faydası olmamış. Shin’den başka hiçbir kadını gözü görmeyecek bir aşka tutulmuş bile. Onu tehdit etmiş, cezp etmeye çalışmış ama yararı olmamış. En sonunda kadından bir iyilik istemiş. Kendisi ve kadın arasında bir yarışma. Demiş ki:
“3 ayak yüksekliğindeki takunyalarla Seoul’e gidiyorum. Ben dönmeden evvel dağın yakınına bir kale dikmek zorundasın. Eğer beni bu yarışta yenebilirsen, evlenme teklifimle seni bir daha rahatsız etmeyeceğim. Eğer ben kazanırsam benimle evlenmek zorundasın.”
Dul Shin, adamın teklifini ciddiyetle düşünüp kabul etmeye karar vermiş çünkü kazanacağından eminmiş ve adamı reddetmekten yorulmuş.
Ertesi sabah yarışma, ya da savaş demeli, başlamış. Dul Shin tüm gücüyle kalesini bitirdiğinde saat öğleyi geçiyormuş. Rahat bir nefes almış.
Park döndüğünde, Shin ona gülümsemiş çünkü yarışı kazandığını düşünmüş. Bununla birlikte, Park, büyük bir zevkle kazandığını haykırmaya başlamış. Ancak o zaman Shin anlamış ki eteğindeki kiri temizlemeyi unutmuş. Ama iş işten geçmiş. Namusunu korumak için dağdan atlayıp, derin suda boğulmuş.

The Widow's Castle
There is a castle on the road side on the way from SUNCHANG to DAMYANG.. Behind the construction of this castle is a sad story. A woman in SUNCHANG, whose last name was Shin, had her husband die not long after her marriage, and people called her widow Shin. She was from a good family, and was also pretty. Unlike other young widow, she decided not to get remarried and to remain faithful to her late husband. In her neighborhood was a classic scholor named Park, who lost his wife and lived alone.
He asked a matchmaker to arrange his marriage with her, but she declined his proposal firmly. Park was a man of power who was respected by his neighbors, but even his authority did not work before the determination of this young widow. He changed his mind and tried to consider other women as his spouse, but it was no use. He was already a captive of love who could not have any interest in other women but her.
He tried threatening her, cajoling her, but to no avail. At last, he asked her one last favor. He suggested a contest between himself and her. He said,
"Now I'm going to Seoul in 3-foot-tall wooden shoes. You have to build a castle on a nearby mountain before I come back. If you can beat me in this race, I will not bother you again with my marriage proposal. However, in case I should win, you have to marry me."
Widow Shin considered his suggestion seriousely and decided to accept it, because she thought it was a sure bet and she was tired of refusing him.
Early next morning, the contest, or rather the fight, started. It was about past Noon when Widow Shin finished her castle with all her might and gave a sigh of relief.
Then Park came back, and she smiled at him because she thought she won the race. Park, however, started to shout that he won, with such a great joy. Only then did Widow shin realize that she forgot to shake the dirt on her skirt, but it was too late. She jumped off the mountain, fell into the deep water and drowned, only to keep her chastity.
The castle she built was later named the Widower's Castle.
