The Rock in the Shape of a Girl / Kız Şeklindeki Kaya
Birkaç yy. önce Daegul-san eteklerinde yaşayan bir çift varmış. Bir gün, adam ağaç kesmeye dağa gitmiş. Baltasıyla ağaçları keserken ak saçlı bir ihtiyar görünmüş ve demiş:
“Sen çok çalışıyorsun. Yarın sabah buraya tekrar gel.” Ve gözden kaybolmuş.
Ertesi sabah adam, ihtiyarın dediği yere geldiğinde o gün kestiği ağacın altında oturan küçük bir kız bulmuş. Kıza yaklaştığında,
“Merhaba, babacığım.” demiş kız.
Adam, bu kızı gelip alması için ihtiyarın onu buraya çağırdığını düşünmüş ve kızla birlikte eve dönmüş. Ta ki bir keşiş çıkıp “Bu kız uzun süre yaşamayacak” diyene dek kıza bakmış.
“Neden kızımın uzun yaşamayacağını söylüyorsun?” diye sormuş keşişe.
Keşiş demiş:
“Eğer onun hayatını kurtaracaksan, kameri ayın 15’inde kızı elinde bir sepet pirinç kekiyle evinin ardındaki dağa gönder. Kız dağa tırmanırken ardına bakmadığından emin ol.”
Kızın hayatından endişe ederek, ona bir sepet pirinç keki hazırlamış ve onu ne olursa olsun ardına bakmaması konusunda tembihlemeyi de unutmadan dağa göndermiş. Kız tırmanırken, kızın arkasında aniden gök gürültülü şimşekli yağmur bastırmış. Gürültüye dönen kız, babasının kendisine dediklerini tamamen unutmuş. Ardına baktığı anda da insanların Chenibau dedikleri kayaya dönüşmüş. Cheni genç kız, Bau ise İngilizce’de kaya demektir. Kameri ayın 15’inde beyaz elbiseli bir kızın dağdan inip dağa çıktığı söylenir; ama onu görmüş sadece birkaç kişi vardır.

The Rock in the Shape of a Girl
Several hundred years ago, a couple lived under DAEGULSAN in our neighborhood. One day, the husband went wood cutting in the mountain. He was cutting down trees with his ax when a gray-haired man appeared and said,
"You are working so hard. Come here again tomorrow morning," and disappeared.
The next morning when he got to where the old man said, he found a young girl sitting under the tree he cut the other day. When he approached her, she said,
"Hello, daddy."
He thought that the old man must have asked him to come there for this girl, and took her with him to his house. He looked after the girl until one day a monk came by and said,
"This girl will not last very long."
"Why are you saying that my girl will not last very long?" he said.
The monk said,
"If you are to save her life, send her to the mountain behind your house with a basket of rice cake on the 15th of the first lunar month. See to it that she doesn't look back while climbing."
Afraid of her life, he prepared a basket of rice cake, gave it to her, and sent her to the mountain without forgetting to remind her that she should not look back no matter what. While she was going up, it started to rain accompanied by thunder and lightening, behind her back. The girl looked back at the loud sound, completely forgetting what her father said. The moment she looked back, she turned into a rock, which people call CHENIBAU. CHENI is a young girl and BAU is a rock in English. A girl in a white dress is said to go up and down the mountain on the 15th of the first lunar month, but few people have actually seen her.
