The Requital Of A Toad / Kara Kurbağanın Öcü

Bir zamanlar, bir kız vardı. Bu kız pirinç pişirebilecek yaşa gelince mutfağa kara kurbağa girdi. Kız, kara kurbağaya acıdı ve ona bir çorba kaşığı kadar pirinç verdi. Kara kurbağa pirinci yedikten sonra oradan ayrıldı. Kız ne zaman yemek pişirse kara kurbağa meydana çıkıp biraz yemek yiyip kayboluyordu. Bu birkaç yıl sürdü.

Kız, ailesine çok saygı duyardı. Fakirdi ve gündelikçi olarak çalışırdı.

Yaşadığı köydeki inanca göre köylüler yangın, kıtlık, veba gibi felaketleri önlemek için her sene bir kız kurban ediyorlardı.

Bu sene de kız bakıyorlardı. Kara kurbağayı besleyen kız bunu duydu ve ayi görevlisini buldu, dedi ki: “Kendimi satmak istiyorum. Lütfen ailemin daha iyi bir hayat sürmeleri için gereken parayı verin.”

Ayin günü geldi. Kız, her zamanki gibi kara kurbağaya bir çorba kaşığı kadar pirinç verip: “Bu sana verebileceğim son yiyecek. Kendine iyi bak!” dedi. Akşam oldu. Ayin alanına gidip oturdu. Hava karardı. Gece yarısı devasa bir kırkayak tavandan indi ve kızın kanını emmeye çalıştı. Tam o anda kara kurbağa ortaya çıktı ve kırkayakla savaşmaya başladı.

Kara kurbağa, kendi zehrini kırkayağa boşaltırken kırkayak da kızdan vazgeçip kara kurbağaya zehir tükürmeye başladı. İkisi gece boyu dövüştü. Sabah olduğunda her ikisi de ölmüş, kız ise sağ sağlim kurtulmuştu.

Köylüler kızı ölü bulmayı beklerken, kızı canlı görünce şok oldular. Sonra da kızın yanındaki devasa kırkayakla, kara kurbağanın ölü olduğunu fark ettiler. Neler olduğunu sorduklarında kız gördüklerini anlattı.

İnanılmaz hikayeyi duyan köylüler, kızın kendi ailesine saygısından dolayı Tanrı’nın ona yardım ettiğine inandılar. Ayrıca kara kurbağayı da övdüler. Kız, ailesinin yanına döndü ve mutlu bir hayat yaşadı. Köylüler bir daha asla kurban sunmadılar.

Once upon a time, there lived a girl. When this girl was about to cook rice, a toad came into the kitchen. She felt sorry for the toad and gave it a spoonful of rice. The toad disappeared after it ate the rice. Whenever she cooked a meal, the toad appeared from somewhere and then disappeared again after eating some food. This continued for several years.

The girl had a lot of respect for her parents. She was poor, and she had to do daily work for others, such as cleaning their clothes, giving a hand with their farming, etc. in order to support her parents.

There was a public religious place in the village where she lived. The villagers had to sacrifice a girl every year at that place because they experienced a calamity, such as fire, famine, and pest when they did not. So they regularly bought a girl and sacrificed her there. And all the sacrificed girls were always found dead the following day.

This year, they were also looking for a girl to sacrifice. The girl who was giving food to the toad heard about it and went to see the caretaker of the religious place. She said, " I want to sell myself. Please give the money to my parents so that they can have a better life".

The day for the sacrifice came. She gave a spoonful of rice to the toad as usual and said, "This is the last food I can give to you. Take good care of yourself!" In the evening, she went to the religious place and sat down. It became dark. In the middle of the night, a huge centipede came down from the ceiling and tried to suck her blood. At that very moment, a toad appeared and began to fight with the centipede. That toad was the one the girl fed rice to.

When the toad spit its poison at the centipede, the centipede turned away from the girl and began to spit its poison at the toad. They fought against each other throughout the night. When the morning came, both of them were dead, and the girl was safe without any injury.

The villagers naturally expected to find the girl dead and they had come to remove her body. However, they were shocked to find her alive. They also found the huge centipede and the big toad near the girl, both of which were dead. They asked her what happened. She told them what she had seen.
When they heard the amazing story, they believed that God had helped her because of her sincere respect for her parents. They also praised the toad. The girl went back to her parents and lived a happy life. And the villagers never had to sacrifice another girl again.
