The Guardian Spirit of Unamsan (Unamsan'ın Koruyucu Ruhu)

Genç adam, sonraki gün Cheongju’ya gitmeyi önerdi. Valinin iş yerine vardıklarında baş keşiş, valiye, ertesi gün gelip kendini belirli bir saatte takdim etmesini söyleyen bir çağrı gönderdi. Usta endişelendi; ama genç adam endişelenecek bir şeyin olmadığını söyledi. Ustası adına tapınağa gitti.

The Guardian Spirit of Unamsan

Once in Cheongju, there was a temple named Yongwhasa, whose head monk was so powerful that the governor of the area could not manage his job without the monk's approval. One day, a young man came to an Yi family in Hansan, asked to become a hired hand for the family, and got the job.

About one year later, the master of the family was appointed as governor of Cheongju, and the master found himself in an awkward position. To do his job, he had to present himself before the head monk, but he was revolted by the thought alone. The young man sensed his master's agony and asked what's troubling him. The master said:
"It's none of your business."

"How come it's none of my business. I lived under your roof and worked for your family for over a year, and now I'm one of your family." said the young man.

The master could not refuse him any longer and said,
"Have a seat. As you know, I was appointed as governor of Cheongju, and when I arrive there, I will have to present myself before the monk, which makes me sick. I don't know what to do."

"Master, don't worry and leave everything to me. I will take care of it." said the young man.

The master knew that he was quite smart for an errrand boy, but still he could not be sure of his ability to handle the dilemma. Anyway he gave his permission. The young man suggested going to Cheongju the next day. Hardly had they arrived to his new post before the headmonk sent a summons that he report to the temple the next day by certain hour. The master got worried but the young man assured him that there was nothing to worry about, and he went to the temple on behalf of the master.

At the temple, he called the headmonk's name loud, which was so unusual that the headmonk was struck dumb. No one had ever dared to call him by his name yet. When the monk took close look at him, the young man was pressing the stone pillar of the temple with his fingernail, which went halfway through it. The monk was aghast, and asked politely what brought him there. The young man said,
"I came here for an errand from the governor. How dare you summon the govorner? You report to the governor's by certain hour tomorrow, or you are as good as dead."

When he returned, the master asked what happened, and the young man said,
"He will be here tomorrow. When he comes in, give an order like this. 'You should be hacked to pieces for what you did, but this time I will let you go with just a few lashes on your calf.' Then I will lash him on the calf."

The next day when the head monk came, the governor did exactly as he was told. The young man pulled out a hair from his head and hit him hard on the calf with the hair, which bounced off the monk's calf and reached the beam of the temple, which broke, and in return the temple collapsed.

The young man was no other than the guardian spirit of Uam mountain in disguise. The head monk became so influential and haughty that he taugh him a lesson.
