The Cucumber in Chacheon / Chacheon’daki Hıyar

800 sene önce Hwasun’da, Bae soyadlı bir İbang (valinin yardımcısı veya sekreteri) eşi ve tek kızıyla birlikte yaşardı. Mutluluğu her gün büyüyüp serpilen kızını izlemekte bulmuştu. Bir kış günü kız 20 yaşına geldiğinde, köyün yakınında bulunan dağdaki Chacheon adlı kuyudan su almaya gitti.

Ne şaşırtıcı ki suda bir salatalık yüzüyordu. Salatalık mevsimi olmadığından bu salatalığı sıra dışı buldu. Salatalığı bir şekilde kuyudan çıkardı, yedi. Birkaç ay sonra eğer öğrenilirse kendisine ve ailesine leke getirecek şekilde hamile kaldığını anladı. Durumu ailesinden sakladı, kendi üzüntüsünden hastalandı. Bir gün annesi kızının bedenindeki değişikliği fark edip ne olduğunu sordu. Ailesine kuyu başında geçen, pek de inandırıcı olmayan olayları anlattı. Teklifi reddedemediler, çocuğu almasına izin verdiler. Çocuğu alıp götüren keşiş, devlet işlerinde krala hizmet eden Bojoguksa’ydı. Çocuğu tüm kalbiyle ve ruhuyla büyüttü. Çocuğun kendisi de Jingakguksa adıyla büyük bir keşiş oldu.

The Cucumber in Chacheon

About 800 hundred years ago in HWASUN, an IBANG(secretary or assistant to the mayor) whose last name was 배 lived with his wife and an only daughter. He found happiness in watching his daughter grow beautiful every day. In one winter when she turned 20, she went to a well named CHACHEON, which was located at a mountain near the village, to draw water.
To her surprise, there was a cucumber flaoting on the water, which she found unusual because cucumbers were not in season. Anyhow, she took it out of the well and ate it. Few months later she found out that she was pregnant, which was such a dishonor for her and her family if they found out, so she hid it from her parents and worried herself sick. One day her mother noticed the change in her body, and asked her what happened.
She told her parents what happened at the well, which was not enough convincing. Anyway she gave a birth to a baby boy, which her parents took and left under a tree around a pavilion about a mile away.
A few days later, when they went to the pavilion to see what had become of the baby, a white bird was protecting the baby with its wings.
When they returned the next day and the next day, things were the same. They found it strange enough to reconsider their decision, and agreed to retrieve the baby. This time they had a plan. They went to NEUNGJU to visit a relative. On their way back home with other passengers they pretended that they heard a baby crying nearby and led the fellow travelers to the pavilion, where the baby was left alone. They picked the baby up cursing whoever deserted the baby. They made the excuse that they didn't have a son and so the baby should be for their keeping. That way they could bring up the baby without the stigma ususally attached to a bastard son. When the baby turned 10, a monk came by for an offering trip and saw the boy. He said,
"You have a strange boy in your house, and he is destined to die young. If you let me have the custody of the boy, I will protect him and take the curse off him. He will make a great man."
They could not refuse his offer and let him take the boy with him. The monk who took the boy away was BOJOGUKSA, whose job was to assist the King in state affairs, and he raised the boy with all his heart and soul that he became a great monk himself and succeeded his teacher as JINGAKGUKSA.
