Shilla Hanedanında Kral Jinpyeong döneminde Wonhyo tarafından inşası yapılıp tamamlanmıştır ancak bu konuda kesin kanıt yoktur. 200 kadar oda ile büyük bir tapınak ve Gorye hanedanının sonunda (1376) Nawong ve Hyegeun'un burada kalmalarıyla ünlüdür ve 1472'e ulusun güvenliğini isteyen ana tapınak olarak belirtildikten sonra Bowonsa olarak adlandırıldı. (Chosun hanedanlığında Kral Seongjong'un 3. yılı)

Buranın Shinreuksa diye adlandırılmasının nedeni hakkında bazı efsaneler olmasıdır. Bunlardan biri Myreuk(Hyegeun belirtir) Hyegeun esrarengiz bir halkayla deli bir atı korumuştu. Diğeri ise bu deli attı. O yakalanmak için çok deli ve daha da deliye dönüyordu ve Indang daesa onu eliyle tuttuğu zaman aniden uysallaşıyordu. Bu güç, tanrısal süper güçten geldiği için insanlar bu tapınağı Shinreuksa olarak adlandırdı. Bazen, çok katlı kule olması nedeniyle, Byeokdol (Blok) tarafından doğu mevkiinde inşa edilen Byeokjeol (Byeok tapınağı) olarak adlandırmışlardır.

About
It has been delivered that it was built by Wonhyo in the period of king Jinpyeonk in Shilla dynasty, but there is no exact evidence left. It is famous for their staying, Nawong and Hyegeun, in the end of Gorye dynasty (1376) and was a great temple with as many as 200 rooms, and was called as Bowonsa after being indicated as the main temple wishing the safety of nation from 1472. (The 3rd year of king Seongjong in Chosun dynasty).

There have been some legends about the reason to call it Shinreuksa. One is that Myreuk( indicate Hyegeun) or Hyegeun had protected a crazy horse with a mysterious ring, the other is that the crazy horse, too crazy to catch and getting more crazy, become quite and docile suddenly when Indang daesa gripped it handle by the hand. As this power came from the divine superpower, so people called this temple Shinreuksa. It was sometime called as Byeokjeol ( Byeok temple) due to the multi layered tower, located in the eastern site, built by Byeokdol ( Block).
