Çiçek sahasına yürürken otsu alanın ortasında duran bir ağaç ve bir Meercat asılı bir koala da dahil olmak üzere çeşitli sevimli hayvan heykelleri ile karşılaşılır. Ziyaretçiler ayrıca küçük bir şelale ve ördeklere sahip olan havuzun yanında dinlenebilir.

Hyeongpung Dinlenme Durağı
(Jungbu Naeryuk Otoyolu Hyeonpung Yönü)

500 yaşındaki Zelkova ağacı, yıl boyunca Seonghali köyü yanında güvenle tutulurken bu dinlenme durağında belirgin olarak yer almaktadır. Ağacın etrafındaki park, hikayesini anlatır. Parkta ayrıca üçgen şeklinde küçük bir ev vardır. Bir seferlik en fazla dört kişi için yeterli oda ile küçük bir kütüphane bulunur. Bir yürüyüş patikası ve Nakdong Nehri’ni görebileceğiniz bir rasathane de bulunmaktadır.

Munsan Dinlenme Durağı
(Namhae Otoyol Suncheon Yönü)

Aşağı yukarı "Dilek Işığı Tema Parkı" olarak çevrilen bu dinlenme durağında park adı farklı fenerler ve Güney Gyeongsang’daki Jinju’da her sonbaharda gerçekleşen aydınlatma tasarımlarını kutlayan popüler bir yerel festivalden gelmektedir. Dilek taşıyan kırmızı ve mavi birçok geleneksel fener parkın etrafında asılıdır. Bir fenere dileğinizi koymak istediğinizde, dinlenme durağındaki restoranda bulunan sarı kağıt parçası üzerine dileğiniz yazılır. Eğer dileğinizi bırakırsanız, yetkililer daha sonra bunun için bir fener yakacaktır.

Considering that any city in Korea is easily accessible within a half-day’s worth of driving, many choose to drive when traveling instead of getting on a train or flying.

For drivers who need to take a break every hour to stretch their legs and fill up the gas tank, rest stops on highways provide all the essential facilities and services. And nowadays, many rest stops are going above and beyond providing only the basic services.

In the hopes of attracting visitors for longer than just a quick visit, some rest stops have come up with a unique theme or more family-friendly attractions. One is decorated with stuffed animals that young visitors are happy to see, and one set up a wall of locks where couples can make promises for their future together. Some even try to have people stay at their rest stops longer by allowing visitors to cook their own food so that they can feel at home while they are on the road.

There are a total of 28 different highways in Korea, and the 182 rest stops are the spots where drivers forget about being behind the wheel for a few minutes, according to the Korea Expressway Corporation. Here, we introduce 10 rest stops worth spending a little more time at than just going in for a bathroom break and refilling the gas tank.

Icheon Rest Stop
(Jungbu Expressway Tongyeong Direction)

Here, visitors can time travel to the 1970s as the rest stop is decorated as a street with buildings from that era. There is an old movie theater, a small supermarket and a used book store. One can take a look at items that used to be sold at such stores back in the day, including a box of crayons made by a company popular among elementary school students in the 1970s and 1980s.

Old movie posters and textbooks used in the 1970s are also on display. It’s a nostalgic place for adults and an educational place for youngsters to learn about how much Korea has changed in a short amount of time.

Jukam Rest Stop
(Gyeongbu Expressway Seoul Direction)

Since many people are now traveling with their pets, this rest stop created a space where drivers with pets can have a comfortable break. There is an area called Meongmeong Park. The free facility has about eight workout areas for dogs featuring wooden steps and hurdles. It also sells dog snacks such as a can of lamb or chicken for 2,000 won ($1.82) or chewing sticks for 1,000 won. There is also a walking trail for those looking for a place for themselves after they entertain their dogs.

Tancheon Rest Stop
(Cheonan-Nonsan Expressway Nonsan Direction)

This rest stop is located in the area that used to be a part of the Baekje Kingdom. (18 B.C-600 A.D.). Using this to its advantage to bring in people interested in history, it opened a center where one can learn more about the capital city Buyeo of Baekje. After the cities of Gongju and Buyeo in South Chungcheong and Iksan in North Jeolla were designated Unesco cultural heritage sites, more people have been making their way to drop by the rest stop. Models of artifacts are on display with photos and detailed explanations on how things are made and their historical background.

Jeongeub Rest Stop
(Honam Expressway Suncheon Direction)

Here the most eye-catching facility is the restroom. It took 280 million won to complete the remodeling of the bathroom and it opened to visitors in July.

It garnered attention for its luxurious look more frequently seen at fancy hotels or restaurants. The women’s restroom is inspired by the popular Hollywood film “Roman Holiday,” starring Audrey Hepburn, and photos of famous scenes from the beloved movie decorate the room. The children’s restroom is made as if the entire place is inside a spaceship. Each stall is named after a planet.

Jinan Mount Mai Rest Stop
(Iksan-Pohang Expressway in Both Direction)

This rest stop was built in a location with an excellent view of Jinan’s famous Mt. Mai.

If visitors want to have a even better look at the mountain, they can climb up to the observatory on top of the hill located next to the rest stop. The trail is paved and features wooden steps to help ease the climb for visitors without hiking shoes.

There are some other interested things to see at the observatory including a so-called Slow Mailbox which delivers your messages in the mail on a desired date, usually a couple of months to a year later.

Pyeongchang Rest Stop
(Yeongdong Expresswa Gangneung Direction)

This rest stop recently went through a two-month renovation and re-opened in July. As the town prepares for the upcoming Winter Olympics, many winter sports-related paintings are on display throughout the facility. Anywhere that you might spend time, such as the cash registers at a convenient store, there are brief explanations of the sports that will be played during the Olympic games in 2018.

Danyang Rest Stop
(Jungang Expressway Busan Direction)

“Who ordered jjajangmyeon?” A delivery man looking for someone who ordered the Korean style Chinese black noodle is a scene that any visitor to this particular rest stop will see often. It may feel weird to get food delivered while most people come to a rest stop to go inside the restaurant and eat, but this particular rest stop encourages food delivery to attract more drivers wanting to take a rest. At the park on the rest stop grounds, you can call and order food from nearby restaurants and you will get your food delivered right to you.

Hwaseo Rest Stop
(Dangjin-Yeongdeok Expressway Sangju Direction)

This particular rest stop is a hit with the kids, thanks to a character-themed park open to visitors. At the entrance of the park, an impressive Dutch-style windmill stands. After walking through a flower field, one is greeted with a variety of cute animal statues, including a koala bear hanging on a tree and a meercat standing in the middle of the grassy field. Visitors can also relax near the pond featuring a small waterfall and ducks.

Hyeongpung Dinlenme Durağı
(Jungbu Naeryuk Expressway Hyeonpung Direction)

A 500-year old Zelkova tree, considered to have kept the nearby Seonghali village safe over the years, stands prominently at this rest stop. The park around the tree tells its story. The park also features a small house shaped like a triangle. It is a small library (pictured right) with enough room for up to four people at a time. There is also a walking trail and an observatory where one can see the Nakdong River.

Munsan Dinlenme Durağı
(Namhae Expressway Suncheon Direction)

The name of the park at this rest stop, which roughly translates to “Wish Light Theme Park” comes from a popular local festival celebrating different lanterns and lighting designs that takes place every fall in Jinju in South Gyeongsang. Many red and blue traditional lanterns bearing wishes are hung around the park. When you want to put your wish on a lantern, you write your wish on a piece of yellow paper found in the restaurant of the rest stop. If you leave your wish, officials there will later create a lantern for it.
