Oriental Express, klasik Kore müziğini, caz ve müzik teknolojisinin yer aldığı çeşitli türleri karıştıran füzyon müzik grubunun yeni bir çeşididir. Oriental Express, grubun ana üyeleri Youngjun Choi (Klavyeci), Hyounjong Kim (Davulcu) ve Hyunmo Kim (Bas gitarist) tarafından 2004 yılında kurulmuştur. Youngjun Choi, grubun lideri ve aynı zamanda ana bestecidir. 2005 yılında Kyungso Park (Gayageum sanatçısı); 2012 yılında ise Ashley Sunyoung Choi (Haegeum sanatçısı) gruba katılmıştır.

Grup, yalnızca sundukları gösteriler için büyük çaba harcamamış; aynı zamanda kendi gösterilerinde ihtiyaç duydukları yazılım ve donanımı geliştirmeye çalışmıştır. Grup, elektronik haegeum, elektronik gayageum, i-janggu (Kore klasik perküsyonü) gibi enstrümanları geliştirmeye devam etmektedir. Ayrıca, Kore klasik müziğinin birleştirici yazılımı için uzmanlığını genişletmiştir. Buna ek olarak çeşitli sensörler ve gerçek zamanlı interaktif yazılım, Youngjun Choi ve Oriental Express tarafından geliştirilmektedir.

Oriental Express’in müziği, sadece “Bu klasik Kore müziği” ya da “Bu Kore klasik füzyon caz müziği” şeklindeki tanımlara yoğunlaşmayan ve Kore klasik enstrümanlarının ve batı tarzı modern müzik enstrümanlarının bir bütünüdür. Bu sadece “Oriental Express” müziği olarak tanımlanabilmektedir. Bu müzik, “Grubun her bir üyesinin ahenkli ruhu tarafından yaratılan yeni bir ses” olarak adlandırılabilmektedir.

1. Oriental Express ­ Sesin yeni yolunu ve yeni bir türü aramaktadır.

- Oriental Express, gayageum ve diğer klasik Kore müziği enstrümanlarının melodisine piyano melodisini uyumlu bir şekilde ekleyerek müzik çeşitliliğini gerçekleştirmeye çalışmaktadır. Bireysel olarak etkili ve farklı seslerin karışımı, başka bir müzik tarzı yaratmaktadır.

2. Oriental Express Teknolojileri ­ Yeni bir ses oluşturmak için bitmeyen coşku

- Elektrik gayageum, elektrik haegeum, i-jangu ve süper daego dahil olmak üzere elektronik Kore klasik enstrümanlar geliştirilmesi
- Kore geleneksel müzik aleti yazılımlarının geliştirilmesi
- Kore müzik enstrümanı denetleyicisi gibi yen birimlerin geliştirilmesi

3. Oriental Express Müzik Kütüphanesi ­ Müzik içeriğinin çeşitliliği için çabalama

- KOCCA tarafından finanse edilen ses kütüphanesi ile çeşitli ses modüllerinin geliştirilmesi

Oriental Express is a new breed of fusion music band blending various genres including Korean classical music, Jazz and music technology. Oriental Express was formed in 2004 with Youngjun Choi(Keyboardist), Hyounjong Kim (Drummer), Hyunmo Kim (Bassist ) as the main members of the band. Youngjun Choi is the leader of the band and also the main composer. In 2005, Oriental Express was joined by Kyungso Park (Gayageum player), In 2012 Ashley SunYoung Choi (Haegeum Player) joined.

Not only have they made great endeavors in delivering performances but also in the development of software and hardware which are needed for their performances. They have been developing electronic haegeum, electronic gayageum, i-janggu(Korean classical percussion). Moreover, they have also expanded their expertise to the synthesizer software for Korean classical instruments. In addition, various sensors and interactive real-time software are under development by Youngjun Choi and Oriental Express.

The music of Oriental Express is an ensemble of Korean classical instruments and western-style modern musical instruments, which cannot simply be condensed into a sentence definition in a way that ‘it is Korean traditional music’ or ‘This is Korean classical fusion jazz’. It can be defined only as “Oriental Express” Music. This music can be called “the new sound created by the harmonious spirit of each members of the band”.

1. Oriental Express - Seeking for new path of sound and a new genre

- The music of Oriental Express has pursued musical diversity by harmoniously adding piano melodies to the main melody of gayageum and other Korean classical instruments. The mixture of individually influential and different sounds has created another revolutionary style of music.

2. Oriental Express Technologies ­ Ceaseless Enthusiasm for Creating New Sound

- Developing electronic Korean classical instruments including electric gayageum, electric haegeum, i-jangu (6-axis interactive wireless double-headed drum) and super daego (6m large screen drum)
- Developing Korean traditional musical instrument software synthesizer VSTi plugins.
- Developing peripherals such as Korean musical instrument controller.

>>> Youngjun Choi (Piyano & Sentezleyici)

Youngjun Choi, Berklee Müzik Koleji’nde, Brown Üniversitesi’nde ve Stanford’da müzik eğitimi almıştır. Seoul Geleneksel Müzik Orkestrası ve Hong Kong Çin Orkestrası ile sahne almış ve Ssamji Sound Art 101, Media City 2002 ve Seoul Medya Sanat Bienali Özel Programı’nda medya sanat ekranına katılmıştır. Şu an Seoul Sanat Enstitüsü’nde profesör olarak çalışmaktadır; daha önceden Sangmyung Yüksekokulu’nda misafir profesör olarak bilgisayar müziği dersi vermiştir. MBC TV Talk Show Band’de sahne aldı. Ayrıca dizi müziği yapımcısı kariyeri de vardır. “Berklee Style Jazz Piano Lesson Book”, “Sound Design and Recording”, “Composing with Max MSP”, “Media Arts with Max MSP” gibi çeşitli kitaplar yazmıştır.



>>> Hyounjong Kim (Davul)

Seoul Sogang Üniversitesi’nde Kimya Mühendisliği okumuştur. Şu an Yeoju Teknoloji Üniversitesi popüler müzik bölümünde bir profesör olarak çalışmaktadır. Daha önce Seoul Caz Akademisi eğitim bölümü başkanı olarak görev yapmıştır. “Promise”, “Zoo next to Museum” ve “Yonggari”gibi filmlerin ses kayıt oturumuna katılmıştır. Jungsun Lee, Hyunwoo Lee, Shinchon Blues, Joonho Yang, Sangwon Han ve Wonyoung Jung gibi sanatçılarla canlı performanslarda yer almıştır. “Rock Drums” kitabının yazarıdır.



>>> Hyunmo Kim (Basgitar)

Hanyang Üniversitesi’nden mezun olmuştur. Bas gitarist, pop müzik bestecisi, video sanatçısı ve kayıt müzisyeni olarak çalışmıştır. Ayrıca Silent Eye, Moodang gibi albümlerde çeşitli sanatçılar ile birlikte bas gitar oturumları için çalışmıştır. Dünyadaki en ünlü basgitaristlerden biridir ve özellikle Japonya, Tayvan ve ABD’de sahne almıştır. Canlı gösterilerde aktif yer almaktadır; ayrıca yurtiçinde ve yurtdışında öğretim görevlisi olarak basgitar tanıtım dersleri vermektedir.

Kyungso Park, Ulusal Gugak (Geleneksel Kore Müziği) Ortaokulu ve Lisesi’nden mezundur. Kore Ulusal Sanat Üniversitesi’nde Sanat Master’ı kazanmıştır.



>>> Ashley Sunyoung Choi (Haegeum)

Ashley Sunyoung Choi, Ulusal Gugak (Geleneksel Kore Müziği) Ortaokulu ve Lisesi’nden mezundur. Kore Ulusal Sanat Üniversitesi’nde Sanat Master’ı kazanmıştır.

Youngjun Choi studied music at Berklee College of Music 2002 (BM), Brown University (MA) and Stanford (CCRMA). He performed with Seoul Metropolitan Traditional Music Orchestra, Hong Kong Chines Orchestra and participated in the display of media arts at Ssamji Sound Art 101, Media City 2002 and Seoul Media Art Biennale Special Program in 2012. He currently works as a Professor of Seoul Institute of the Arts, and previously taught computer music as a visiting professor at the Graduate School of Sangmyung University. He performed with MBC TV Talk Show Band. He also had a career of TV drama music producer. He has written several books with titles of ‘Berklee Style Jazz Piano Lesson Book’, ‘Sound Design and Recording’, ‘Composing with Max MSP’, ‘Media Arts with Max MSP’ etc…



>>> Hyounjong Kim (Drums)

He studied Chemical Engineering at Sogang University(B.S.) in Seoul. He holds an A.A. degree in music from Musicians Institute in L.A. and an M.M. degree in computer music from Sang Myung University in Seoul. He is currently working as a professor of Yeoju Institute of Technology in popular music department. He previously served as the head of education department at Seoul Jazz Academy. He has participated in recording sessions for various movies like ‘Promise’, ‘Zoo next to Museum’ and ‘Yonggari’ and more. And he has played with various artists including Jungsun Lee, Hyunwoo Lee, Shinchon Blues, Joonho Yang, Sangwon Han and Wonyoung Jung for live performances. He is the author of book ‘Rock Drums’.



>>> Hyunmo Kim (Bass)

He is a graduate of Hanyang University. He has worked as a recording musician as a bass player, a composer of pop music, video artist. He has also worked for the bass session with various artists in such albums as Silent Eye, Moodang. He is one of the famous bass player in the world with his bass playing and performance especially in Japan, Taiwan, and United States. He is active in his doing recordings, live performances and bass instruction courses as an instructor in domestic or overseas.



>>> Kyungso Park (Gayageum)

Kyungso Park graduated from National Gugak(Korean Traditional Music) Middle and High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees at Korean National University of Arts.



>>> Ashley Sunyoung Choi (Haegeum)

Ashley Sunyoung Choi graduated from National Gugak(Korean Traditional Music) Middle and High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degrees at Korean National University of Arts.
